On this edition of the word balloon podcast, writer Marty Pasko discusses his work, writing the text of The DC Vault from Running Press. Like last year's Marvel Vault, The Museum In A Book, features a history of the company, incredible art, and wonderful replicas of DC merchandise, from Jr Justice Society decoders, and membership certificates, to promotional tie-ins, plus cover roughs, ashcan issues, an all-star artist jam poster with work from Bob Kane, to Carmine Infantino to Dave Gibbons numerous sketches and memos from the kill list of the original Crisis On Infinite Earths, to Mike Carlin's plot diagram for the Death Of Superman. In this audio interview, Pasko provides an historic commentary spanning the eras, with tales about the genre trends that sandwiched the super-hero eras, the company dynamics from the early days of All American/National Periodicals, to it's current status as an arm of Time -Warner Inc, and observations about DC founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, Julie Schwartz, Bill Finger, Whitney Ellsworth, Frank Robbins, and Jennette Kahn

John and Marty,

I'm an unrepentant Marvel Zombie, but I sure loved hearing about the licensing labyrinths, a property's relationship with itself across various media, and DC history in this episode. Thanks guys!

Fascinating. I really enjoyed hearing about this stuff.

My favorite part, though, was when John was nerding out over Neal Adam's Superman World.

Just listened to this today at work, great stuff. Plenty of meaty discussion in there. I'm more interested in the DC Vault now. I already have the Marvel Vault and wasn't sure if I wanted the DC one because I'm not as big of a fan of DC. The podcast was a nice companion to the series ComicbookComics that's detailing the history of comics by Fred Van Lante. I'm finding comic history just fascinating and all the old stories of that time so I tracked down the older episodes with Marty Pasko that I missed and started listening to Part 1 of that 2 parter.

I love hearing about comic history and this was a fascinating interview. I've ordered a copy of both the DC and Marvel Vaults after listening to this. Great job.

Really enjoyed this interview. I love comics history minutia.

There was a great interview with Stetson Kennedy on Bob Edwards Weekend podcast. He's the guy who infiltrated the KKK and contributed to the Superman radio show. He's a great old muckraking lefty with loads of awesome stories. He even gave his home phone number out on the air and invited anybody to give him a call.

Yet another great interview. FYI, one of the books on comics that was mentioned "The Comics" by Coulton Waugh is still available. It was brought back into print in 1991 by the University of Mississippi and can be bought on Amazon.

Great show John! I loved all the great "inside" DC stories. The book is fantastic as well.

Fascinating interview John. The history of comic books and all of these characters that we have all come to know and love is so interesting to me.

You ought to try and interview Bradford Wright, he wrote a really interesting book chronicling the history of American comic books and their place in pop culture and history called Comic Book Nation. I read it last year for a directed study I did on American comic books. Very good book, I highly recommend it.
