Let's take what we can get for now & be happy! There isn't a lot of time left with Marvel leaving Randy in limbo. I'm sure if the contract gets improved that will see more Silver Centurian in the future.

Personally, I am really, really satisfied with that sculpt & I'm glad it's slimmed down. I think Mark Bright drew it too bulky sometimes.

In light of the above criticism & general raining on our parade, I throw out this thought to you Randy....

You have the mold for this Silver Centurian Iron Man. Why not alter it to make an additional classic and neo-classic museum Iron Men? And perhaps a War Machine would be a smart decision as well. I explained to you before that Tony Stark created and used the War Machine armor as Iron Man, long before Rhodey took it over and renamed himself War Machine. So, that armor should fall under your license as Iron Man, 'cause well, it WAS Iron Man!

Anyway, with Marvel leaving you in limbo, Iron Man being the hottest Marvel property of all right now, you might as well exploit your license to its fullest potential and produce these kool kats!

Sorry Al....not trying to rain on your parade especially if this is a piece you have really been wanting....but if we are getting this piece and HB Iron Man and a battle damage variant plus Annihilation Nova, Daredevil on Gargoyle and Armored variant...I don't understand why other characters we had heard about much earlier are being put "on hold"....nothing personal against IM I just would like to see some different characters....I know this is mostly Marvel's fault but I don't get why some sculpts that I understood to be under way were stopped and yet we keep getting these new sculpts.

Sorry about your pain, but Silver Centurian Iron Man is a grail for me. Honestly, it kinda sucks seeing anyone make a negative comment in this thread, especially if it's about other characters. Like I said, I honestly feel your pain, but it'd be cool if you started a thread about it instead of putting a downer in this one. For me, the sculpt is PERFECT. I just want it painted & put up for order!

As far as why Randy may be doing these variant sculpts of existing sculpts/characters, such as Iron Man....

1. Randy pays a hell of a lot of money to Marvel to license these characters.

2. Iron Man is pretty much the hottest Marvel property at the moment &
Randy was lucky enough to get a license for the character before the
cost went through the roof!

3. It would be silly not to exploit the Iron Man
character to its fullest. He brought in a previously private commissioned
classic armor because he was six months behind once Marvel approved
Phase 4. And a lot of us like it & have ordered it. He produced a Hulkbuster
mini, which was wildly successful. It would be silly not to do a FS
Hulkbuster. And a battle damaged version to go with the new Hulks?
Sounds smart to me. Randy also produced a Modern Iron Man with Stealth
variant. After hearing so many complaints from modernists, saying that
they were being ignored, Randy gave into their pleas. And guess what?
Apparently it's selling like hot cakes! Now we have a Silver Centurian,
which is considered by many to be the second all-time favorite Iron Man
armor! Personally, I think it would be a mistake to not alter this sculpt and
produce another classic, a Neo-Classic and maybe an Iron Man: War
Machine.

4. There are a hell of a lot more folks willing to shell out $150-$200 for an
Iron Man, Captain America, Daredevil, Spider-Man, etc...than other
obscure favorites that we love. The economy is bad. Randy needs to
produce sure fire sellers to make sure his family & employees have food on
the table.

5. All these variants of popular characters make our obscure favorites
possible. I'll take 10 different Wolverines or Spider-Mans if it gets me a
FS Doc Samson one day!

6. There's crazy folks (like me!) who will buy most of this stuff!

:)

this is just my honest observation.

Looking at this piece I must say I'm not crazy about it. There is something off about it IMHO. It seems like, and I mean no offense, an action figure sculpt. (arms are too small. upper body too small relative to the legs )

When I first saw it I almost thought it was a prank. I'm not saying it's that bad, its not, ...but first impression for me was that it was not bowen worthy.

sorry, maybe it will grow on me,...

I will always remember the day I bought that issue (Invincible Iron Man 200). I was too young to drive & I just couldn't wait for someone to get home & drive me to the mall to get it. It looks like it's empty. As if Tony isn't in it.

I love the new IN SC, and I'm sure to be getting this one as well.

However, you bring up a very good point...curious:mistrust:, perhaps Randy wants some sure fire sales seeing it's the end of his contract. Slow sellers are not what he needs to go out with...needs a little bang in the end. DD, IM, CA & Hulk are pretty good characters to leave with. Yeah, I think Randy has taken a take the money and run attitude. With the multi versions of the same character, the going the modern route, and the going back to the big guys, Randy is taking no prisonsers. I guess I can't blame him. If I had a serious doubt that my contract may not be extended I would go for broke as well.

nice story Al.
I remember those moments.
I remember getting on a bus and traveling to a far away (for me at that age) comic store to pick up Iron Fist (I forget the #), the Byrne issue where IF faces off against the X-men. ( I loved that IF kicked Wolvie's a$$)
or the day I picked up Crisis on infinite earth, the death of SG issue.
those were the days.

but seeing your pic I can't help but be reminded of the problem I have with this sculpt. It just doesn't seen as balanced anatomically as the drawing is. (not that it's a great drawing).
Arms to short, torso too smll, legs too long, pose too stiff,...something is not working for me.

edit: I just looked at the SC mb and yeah,..I gotta say, much better. Much more balanced.

This armor has always been portrayed as being a bit bulkier than this sculpt lets on. The boots are way too slim, they need to stick out a bit more and yeah, I see the shorts look to be riding a little high as well. The helmet especially has always been one of the larger the IM has ever had.

i dont understand why people need to complain about every piece that gets sneaked. what other companies do this. im just a collector and its annoying to me, i cant imagine how much it must annoy randy to take time out of his sculpting to come on here and post pics and people just complain. if you want a certain character done than go on the question thread and post them, dont rain on someones parade and post them here. there is certain pieces i want but we all have to be patient, if a extension doesnt go thru than we just have to wait for phase 5. as far as wanting a statue to look different than the pose in the pics sneaked sometimes picture looks different than the statue in person. but have faith in randy, i have most of the busts and statues and ive been happy with everyone of them. its one thing to request something but another to critisize everything that does come out.

this is clearly a museum piece.

and most people like that because it allows for easy display with other statues.

I like an action pose. however what made the first IM statue amazing was that it was a museum pose action.

the simple act of the raised arm readying to shoot a repulsor ray is enough to make the museum pose alive.

this statue while I'm so happy to get the SC looks like an empty suit of armor from the "HALL OF OLD ARMORS"

The sculpt is obviously the mb with the arm positions changed & lower half added. I'm sure you can shrink a pre-existing sculpt, but I don't know if you can increase its "girth." Would I like the upper half bulkier? Sure, but if it can't be done with the mb as a template, I'm fine with how it is.

I just want to own the Silver Centurian & I LOVE the pose! I prefer this pose over any of the previously released/solicited Iron Men! He's just standing there all bad a$$ and that's how it was when he donned that armor. He got his sh*t together, kicked Obadiah's a$$ and reclaimed his company & his place in The Avengers!

Im glad your happy buddy, but I just can't buy this one if he isn't a little meatier. But hey, RB throws these sneaks out to get input, so maybe it can be done. If not, I'm sure it will still sell, but I'll have to pass.

Now if it is the MB with legs added, won't the scale be off quite a bit? I'm hoping this is a new sculpt all together, that way the scale will be in line.

HoldyourfireAl
11-06-2008, 01:12 PM
A few of you have said that you like this pose, but I think that has to do more with it being one of the better cover poses than a good pose to render in 3-D form. I wouldn't like it because he's crouching & the arm positions would obscure the front of the armor.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/HoldyourfireAl/c10fe69c.jpg

I think this pose looks much more regal & heroic. If Randy can get the top half a little bulkier, fine. If not, that's fine with me as well. I think this baby painted up & on a base will change a lot of minds!

What else is cool is that Randy has beaten all the other statue companies. His will be the first to produce a Silver Centurian! Doc, as far as critiquing a sneaked piece Randy has made it clear that he appreciates and feeds off of our input.
In many ways that is the purpose of a sneak. (one of them anyway).

There have been many cases where our feedback has helped a piece get better.
Don't let honest feedback bother just because it may be a bit negative.
We all love this hobby,...trust me.

Al, I understand your excitment, but my advice is be carefull. Your eagerness to have this painted and produced may result in you missing out on a tweak that could make this piece much better.

One of the ways I judge a piece (other than my own opinion), is to observe the responses from forum members.
I think it is clear that something is a bit off about this one, based on the responses so far.
It's clearly not a homerum love fest. So I say, If you REALLY care about SC fight for it to be as good as possible, rather than for it to be done as quickly as possible.

I get what you are saying, but without a contract extension, I fear any changes will doom this one to limbo!

Rome , sometimes i agree with you and others disagree, BUT you always talked soo properly and with respect.
That said , i think we all need to remember the average price of this statues before we say "Nice Randy , when can i buy it" that means , taking in mind that these items are near 1 year far from now, there is time enough to make all of them as good as possible ,one reason, because as i have said before this will cost around 170$ being an excellent piece or just a "not bad" piece.

See, Al?

Dreams do come true.... :)

I lke it but it needs some work. The SC armor needs to be bulkier. That's why Tony created a slicker, faster, leaner armor after the SC one.

Good start though, Randy.

to critique a statue that has a obvious flaw is one thing, like with the face of firelord. but it seems to me that some people look for ways to complain about ststues they dont want. my main point is that randy is the one that does this for a living and is the best in the buisness. given his track record so far i think everyone needs to trust that he knows what he is doing. also pictures arent always the same as seeing it in person, so minor critques like he needs to be heavier may not be the case in person. so we all need to have faith that he knows what hes doing. everyone doesnt want every character that to me doesnt mean that there is something wrong with the statue. to me this looks like a great statue and ill pre order as soon as it comes out. it wasnt top of my most wanted this, but i still think it looks great. i just dont see how comments like ill pass, or i dont want this one are helpful. everyone isnt going to buy every statue, that shouldnt take away from a great sculpt.

Again Doc, I'm not sure I see your point.
If you are saying that people who don't want Silver Centurion should not come to a Silver Centurion thread to "complain" about Silver Centurion being made,...then yeah, maybe I see your POV.
For those who want SC it could be annoying.

But, if you are saying that as long as a piece doesn't have some obvious or terrible flaw we should just "trust Randy" and not express our opinions then I'm sorry Doc I disagree.

Let's agree that pointless complaining is bad. But, this is a forum, a community, a place to come and share your thoughts and your feelings about a hobby you care about.
To say that in this setting you are not allowed to express your thoughts or opinions when they aren't positive Is, IMO wrong.

as far as trusting randy, of course we do. But Doc, he isn't God, or flawless. Truth is there are some released BD pieces which weren't perfect. So yes, trust but it's ok (at least IMHO) to provide feedback.

furthermore randy has asked and invited feedback. He has even said he welcomes critical feedback as long as it's not rude or empty. IOW, don't just say "it sucks" help him understand what it is you don't like. So Randy himself apparently thinks its a good thing.

Another points Randy himself has made is that he sometimes needs another pair of eyes to judge and look at certain pieces because he gets so close that he loses his objectivity. So again, feedback, true and honest feedback is actually important. Think about it for a second. What good would it do if we just agreed and loved everything he sneaks. Our eyes would be as foggy as his.

Last I will say that I even think that responses like "pass" or "not for me" provide important information to Randy. It allows him to gauge the desirability of a piece, which in turns helps him set the production number. (or decide whether to tweak or not)

so it's all good.

Look, I can understand that it can be annoying when someone says something negative about a piece you really want,....but my advice is don't take it personaly as long as the person isn't being an A$$h*le. Read, it, role your eyes, and move on. Heck, post your disagreement.

It's so funny to me when people complain about complainers.

btw, please take this post in the spirit it is offered. you know How much I respect what you've done for this country.

This is just conversation,...please don't think I'm being negative,...

what ive been saying is to point out obvious flaws is a good thing. but there is a big difference between flaws and personal prefrences. what im saying is that because several people think the sculpt is too thin is a personal prefrence, is doesnt make the statue wrong. my main problem though is the endless comments like ill pass, not for me, im not getting this one. i dont see how that is helpful. i dont have a huge problem with critiques based on personal prefrences as long as they are respectful. but a lot of people come off as its there way or its wrong. just look to comics themselves, evry artists draws a character different. so just because you picture a character one way doesnt mean thats the only way it should be done. i also never said randy was a god, but the fact is if we could do it better than him than we would. so thats what i meant when i said we should trust him. does that mean that he'll never make a mistake, no. but he seems to ask our advice or what we want when he needs to. the level of interaction he has with us is more than anyone else in the buisness. so i think we need to appreciate it more, instaed of taking advantage of it by complaining whenever a statue isnt done the exact way we want it. everyone has there own personal prefrences on how a statue should be done, so not everyone is going to get there way or there would be 100 versions of each statue. my point is if you look at every thread of sneaked statues there are so many posts of never ending complaints about minor little dtails instead of obvious flaws. to me as a collector it gets to be to much i couldnt imagine if i was the actual sculptor.i left statueforum because it was way to negative i just dont want this forum to become like that either. collecting is supposed to be a fun thing. seeing sneaks is suppose to be exciting. its not exactly a bad thing if a statue isnt in the exact pose that someone wants it, its just different. so back to the main point, critiques that are meant to help out flaws in a statue are a good thing, but negative comments because the sculpt isnt the exact way that someone wants it dont help anyone. everyone has there own personal prfrences and its ok to share them but in a respectful way. thats all i was trying to say. i never said that we should never question or critque a statue, but just do it ina positive way thats is helpful to the people who are creating it. and just because someone doent want a paticular statue doesnt make something wrong with it.wait for a sneak of one that you have been waiting for and be excited when you get it and if one comes along that your not interested in you dont have to knock it.

i have to say i disagree with you when you say people saying pass is a good thing where it helps him judge production numbers. to me they are empty complaints and dont help in anyway. i believe pre orders are a better way for him to judge production numbers.

i believe you have misunderstood or i havent explain myself right. feedback is a good thing. when it is done in a constructive way. but also i think that things like different poses and similar items are more a personal prefrence and not a reason to scrap a statue and do it again.

randy has been very good about doing polls or asking what we want when he needs to.

my problem is with the endless complaints that there only purpose is to complain. there is a big difference between that and constuctive feedback.

im not complainig about complainers, im only asking people to relax and enjoy the sneaks that we get. and if you have feedback, do it in a way that will help the sculptors working on it, and understand that every statue cant be done in the exact way that each person wants it.

i didnt take anyones comments persona;;y as in this isnt a statue that ive been waiting for.im going to order it, but it wouldnt matter to me if it was heavier or in a different pose. i for one am waiting for cable, cannonball, emma frost and rocket the raccoon. and ill welcome anyones thoughts on those when they come out. i just feel that any feedback given shoulld be constuctive feedback. thats all

I see your point Doc,... There is a lot of what you said which I agree with. I guess when it comes down to it we just disagree on the fundamentals.

In my view a forum is a place to come and express your thoughts, ideas and feelings. As long as you are respectful I think anything you say is ok. We disagree on that point and that is ok.
I happen to think it's ok, to say you think something is too thin, too big, not yellow enough,...or even I will not be buying this. You don't. And it's perfectly fine for us to disagree.

your right we do agree on a lot of points and some we disagree with. i dont see a problem with constructive feedback. as far as a statue being to thin my only point is every artisst draws a character different. so we all have different ideas of what we see that character as.i dont no too much when it comes to the process of sculpting a statue. but to me it looks like they would have to do the statue pretty much all over again to make it heavier. i could be very wrong on that like i said i dont know anythiung about sculpting. i think once this statue is painted and we see it in person that a lot of minds will change. seeing a picture of a statue is different than seeing it in person. but again i dont mind feedback that is constructive. i just disagree that there is something wrong with this statue. my comments were ment mainly for all the negative feedback that doesnt help randy to make things better. thats all. so i dont think we disagree to much, its just hard to get a point across typing.
