John, I have heard these two movies being recommended on your show. Out of the movies I have watched after hearing about them on your show, I enjoyed these the most. What else can you recommend that are similar? I suppose you would call these 70's crime movies? The recommendations don't need to be from the 70's, but if i enjoyed these two, what else should I give a watch?
Thanks!

I'm not John but I'll throw a couple out there.
Bullit - A nice little crime flick with one of the best car chases ever filmed.
Dog Day Afternoon - One of Pacino's best performances.
Serpico - Ditto. Pacino fights corruption within the police department.
None of these are terribly obscure but I'm always surprised when people haven't seen them.

Y'know, you could almost go so far as to say get anything directed by Lumet and Peckinpah. Even the disappointments are interesting.
I'd also toss out Sorcerer which I just discovered a few weeks ago. A great old Roy Scheider film where he and two other guys who are hiding out in South America for various reasons have to transport boxes of nitro across miles of bumpy terrain. I haven't felt so tense in a long time. It's got some great explosions in it too.

I just noticed that tomorrow night on TCM is a documentary called Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film. Doesn't really cover the 70s which is what we seem to be favoring here but it looks like it could be interesting nonetheless.

Oh I agree, but this thread seemed to be focusing on the 70s. I'll take an old Bogie or Cagney film any day and Edward G. Robinson is always fun to watch no matter what he's in. Seeing his old films also makes Chief Wiggum just a little bit funnier.
