There must be something more to this. I can't imagine Ringo's personally received an actual piece of fan mail since the mid-60's.

Does he still accept hate mail?

Does he still accept hate mail?

Only if it's clearly marked and includes a death threat.

Ringo Starr is allowed to do anything he fucking wants. Know why? Because he was in a band with John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison!!!!

Fixed that for you.

RickLM

He got tired of reading letters that said, "What was John like? He's my favorite!"

Although the same would not hold true for Pete Best.

He's like the Beatles' version of Gonzo. You think there is a planet out there called Ringo Starr that is populated full of Ringo Starrs?

Maybe that's why he doesn't want any more fan mail. Maybe he's moving.

Come on, Ringo's a perfectly competent drummer, an able songwriter and a listenable singer.

Yeah, he is.
I'm just mad because the way he asked for no more mail was really nasty, and felt like a big fuck you to the fans.

Seems like a reasonable request--he's had to answer mail for, what, 45 years now?--and in my mind I actually see him as the Simpsons character, sweating every reply.

However, there's a difference between not wanting to pay a mail answering service and this kind of grab:
Starr may not want your fanmail, but the ex-Beatle still wants your cash: For sale on his website are such items as a Ringo Starr tote bag for $19.95, a Ringo Starr hoodie for $54.95 and what everybody needs, a Ringo Starr Babydoll Tee for $34.95.

Why, Ringo, why?

Dear Mr. Starr,

Does your son think that Keith Moon is a better drummer then you? When I saw him drum for the Who he said that Keith taught him how to play.

Thank you,
Doug the Beatles Fan

I am starting to buy Ringo's albums. So far I purchased RingoRama and Goodnight Vienna. In the mail is Sentimental Journey.

Now if I knew that I could write to Ringo and have him sign on of these things, that would have been fab AND gear.

I'm perfectly fine with him not doing it anymore.
It was just that he was kind of nasty about it, which is disappointing, since all four were famous for caring about the fans and taking time to talk with them, even when they got immensely popular.

Yup.

A Ringo greatest hits thing might be good if you really want the No-No song.

well if you think about it, this is actually a pretty stand up thing to do. He could just ignore it and never respond. I am sure alot of people do that.

I guess I should have started off by saying that I have that one. Like you, I thought it was the only one worth having, but I guess I am turning into a Beatle completist in my old age, so I just recently started to buy the rest of them.

And yeah, what a great album that is, I recommend to everyone in this thread.

Update: Ringo responds to the controversy.

Ringo Starr has responded to the outcry following his video message asking fans to no longer send him mail to autograph. The video was lamented by people who deemed Starr as unappreciative and too busy for his fans. Instead, Starr says in a statement, the ban on fan mail was “in direct response to an inordinate amount of items which have recently appeared for sale on e-bay, and to those that repeatedly send cards and items to be signed.” Starr also felt all the mail was “a waste of paper and we all should be mindful of our carbon footprint,” so fan e-mail is probably still encouraged. Starr also added that the initial video message wasn’t aimed at his “real fans” who understand Ringo “has always signed items and is in fact the only Beatle to have been doing so.” “How amazed am I to the reaction to my video update. I hope this statement gets as much. Please read this in a mellow way. Peace and love, Ringo,” Starr said in conclusion

As he gets on in years, Ringo seems to get more and more cantankerous. His Liverpool remark was absolutely a joke told at absolutely the wrong time. I don't disagree about what he said about the signing as much as HOW he said it. He could have been clever and done a re-write of the NO NO SONG:

No, no, no, no, I won't sign it no more
I'm sick and tired of seeing them end up in the e-bay store
No thank you please, it only wastes the trees
And then we have to go and plant some more.
