View Full Version : New Hulk bases?

OK- Like Burger King...I want you to have it your way...
The tricky part is creating bases that will compliment previous releases, and not take up too much shelf space.
So, I've got these new Hulks in the works. Planet Hulk's base was going to have something that's an alien world theme.
I'm interested in your thoughts for :
- Red Hulk
- Kirby Hulk
- Maestro Hulk
- 70's Hulk
For me: It's not so much about the base, as it's about the sculpt itself. I want the collector to be able to position these things with other releases. A base that's too big will make that more difficult. That's why, the typical rocky bases are relatively compact in size.

I'd love to see Maestro Hulk's base have his trophies from the fallen heros on it. Cap's shield, Iron Man's mask, Thor's hammer, etc.

I think the Red Hulk should be some sort firey, lava still rock based base.
The others I would probably keep to simple rock style bases

I agree with you that it is all about the sculpt.
The design of the base I leave to your discretion .

Common theme for all Hulk bases: destruction, rubble and anything smashed!

Growing up I always remembered iconic images of the 70's hulk busting through a wall of some sort.

This Hulk is pretty large. Adding a wall would increase the price and size by a considerable amount.

It was more of a comment rather than a suggestion. ;) Wouldn't make much sense for something that big. Rubble at the base would seem to be an obvious choice. Stone, cinder blocks, concrete chunks, mangled pieces of i-beams, etc.

maybe broken brick's and street gravel for base for the 70's

The Kirby or 70's Hulk would look real boss with a rocky, southern Utah base with a USAF missle casing imbedded in the ground. Remember how the Air Force would always stalk and hunt him down?
The other Hulks well, you could put them in a poppy field as I have zilch interest in them.

Maestro Hulk would look awsome with some of his morbid trophies!
Kirby Hulk in a desert setting or with some of the bizarre machinery he used to draw.
70's Hulk did a lot of damage to cities. Bricks & busted mortar/gargoyles/trim, would be great.
Red Hulk is not one I'm very interested in.

I think Red Hulk's base should be on fire. Maybe lava like Couger said, with fiery footprints walking through it or something. Small fires around the base.

For the Kirby Hulk, maybe something along one of these
lines (the hulk image is obviously just for placement):

You could always add more depth and texture to each of
them, but I was just thinking nice, simple bold lines to
reflect Kirby's style.

I like the idea of the middle one. . .reflecting Kirby's style would be cool and a welcomed change. Though if the Kirby version would be placed with other versions and the idea is to have them some what similar, I think a desert type scene would be appropriate. . . 70's hulk more city-rubble based. No suggestions for the other two. . . I know little about them.

Red Hulk should have some sort of charred base perhaps with some burnt footprints or something...

Cool avatar RB! Is that Sly from Nighthawks?
For the Kirby Hulk or 70's Hulk, I think some kind of desert base would work well.

oh wait, this is about bases right? lol. I'm sorry but the only one I'm interested in is the Maestro Hulk. and that base should be with the trophies
he's accumulated. e.g. Thor's hammer, Cap's shield, Iron Man's helmet and maybe even Silver Surfer's board.

Seeing as Rulk is always so "HOT", maybe a sandy, or rocky base with a melted glazed glass look at or around his feet. With a heated Red/orange color of course.
Kirby should have the "destroyed military" look...guns, shells maybe a tank turret.
I like the fallen hero look for Maestro.
Planet Hulk, defeated gladiator weapons.
70's Hulk...street debris with car tire and man hole cover.

What about the possibility of him standing in the middle of a gamma explosion? The outer edges of the base could be like a greenish-red mushroom cloud, though the wafts of smoke would obviously have to be relatively low so as not to obscure too much of Hulk's legs/feet. But it could look cool to see him standing in the middle of an explosion, if that is at all feasible.

Nice sketches Troy- I'm leaning towards the one on the far right. The Original Iron Man FS (tin can version) has a base that I'm going to retrofit for the Hulk/ Kirby.

for the 70's Hulk I would like to recommend a forrested base. A couple of downed trees and such. I keep thinking that it would be a cool base to display him with Wolverine.
for the Kirby Hulk I would suggest something like him standing on top of a downed military gate with some human footprints heading off in the opposite direction long with a desert theme if that makes any sense.
Maestro would look cool with a base similiar to Hawkeye's but use different characters memorabilia as well as the iconic stuff.
Red Hulk, magma with a crack spliting the base in half.

How about the remains of the Hulk-Buster Base (Run by T-Bolt Ross) as Hulk launches himself into the air. Hulk was always leaping from one war zone/disaster to the next.
- Small ruins with tanks as if seen from great height. I could not find a picture of the base but here is a link with a description... http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~vlemming/oztbase.html

Might also be interesting to use the destroyed (stomping on Stark's back) armor of IronMan's HulkBuster suit......as base to the Hulk sculpt.

You couldn't be more right Randy. As cool as fancy bases are, I am So thankful for my small bases because they make a HUGE difference in my display choices.
Keep it small please.
maestro should be hero trphies.
kirby shoould be desert
70's should be forrest or city (cracked pavement)
professor should be techy base ( you are making a prof no?)

A city-type base for one of them would be great, if nothing else but to break up the monotonous rock bases. Lot's of rebar, broken concrete. Maybe some cracked blacktop where he landed from one of his massive jumps. Hulk is an engine of destruction after all.:)

Did he? I read Future Imperfect a couple of times, but it's been a few years. That "trophy room" is Rick Jones lair. I think that the heroes were killed during some kind of war or something, but the Hulk survived and he developed/evolved into Maestro over time. I don't think that Hulk/Maestro was the reason that they died. Unless I'm misremembering.

Well at the very least, they are all dead, so it makes sense to have artifacts from them in Maestro's base.

So he's walking on sand through the desert and the sand is turned to glass in is foot prints?

No not really. "The Kirby Hulk" will not be a true Kirby depiction. It will have some Jack Kirby visual cues, but that's about it. The anatomy will not be as stylized as a Kirby version. The face and proportions will be the thing that most resembles Jolly Jack's style.

Hmmm... good question. It would have to look big, if you were just looking at the base and ignoring the Hulk himself. It wouldn't really be a direct comparison, more inferred -- almost like an optical illusion. If done right, a powerful-looking mushroom cloud make the Hulk look ENORMOUS (even at 12-16").

Randy, Why not use a plain simple black round base. I believe most collector's like myself are more interested in the character and not a fancy base. I believe that all museum pieces should look like an artist maquette, showing the character in detail.

This is also a good idea as long as some minor element of the character is included in the base.
