On this edition of the word balloon podcast, we speak with writer Joshua Fialkov. We'll talk about his top cow books Cyblade and his pilot season story Alibi, his new western contribution in Image Comics Anthology Outlaw Territory, and his new Dark Horse mini series The Cleaners.

Josh has been busy writing vampire stories. From wrapping up his run on Vampirella, to adaptating the first two Dark-Hunter vampire novels by bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon, Night Pleasures and Night Embrace in manga-style for Dabel Brothers Publishing.

We also talk about Josh's new video work online as head writer for the next chapter in the lonely girl 15 online conspiracy suspense drama the resistance. Joshua's point about how Western cinema has, in general, become more compressed, but Western comics have tended towards greater and greater decompression, is very interesting.

Without putting a value judgement on it, I really got a kick out of those early Lee/Ditko Spider-mans, for example, where Peter would meet a new villain, get his butt kicked by said villain, recuperate and defeat said villain, all the while deal with one of Aunt May's visits to the hospital or another Betty Brant wig-out session. All in one issue!

On the surface that approach seems much more plot-driven, but I submit the artwork more than the writing conveyed the bulk of characterization. So a single panel might bear that issue's entire means of insight. Like how a single decimal point determines if you have one, or one hundred dollars. The greatest example I can think of right now is that famous panel where you can see Peter's eyes through the mask. Absolutely heart-wrenching.
