So, I felt John's board would be appropriate for this question.

I'm really craving some good noir in novel, movie and comic/trade form. So, could I get a few recs in each category? Thanks in advance.

Haven't seen them. So that means they must have been released before I was born.

As far as novels are concerned, check out any of the offerings from Hard Case Crime. They publish both previously out-of-print material as well as new noirs. Among my favorites from this line are Lemons Never Lie by Richard Stark and Bust by Jason Starr and Ken Bruen.

Movie-wise, I would recommend Murder My Sweet, Rififi and newer films like You Kill Me and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

In comics, Criminal is the obvious choice for straight-up noir. Bru and Lark's Scene of the Crime, 100 Bullets and The Killer are wonderful reads too.

Richard Matheson has a great book called Noir that collects his first three suspense novels. They're not really crime noir, but more about ordinary people getting in over their heads. Really good classic dark suspense from the 50s.

Good Call. I read The Little Sister a few months ago.

Two more good books are The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett and The Killer Inside me by Jim Thompson.

I don't know that I would call it definitive, but these guys (http://outofthepast.libsyn.com/) have a good list going.

My favorite episode is the comparison of The Big Lebowski to The Big Sleep. (http://outofthepast.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=33804)

On the movie-front I second Touch of Evil and The Third Man and also highly recommend The Lady From Shanghai. Also, John mentioned on WB the recent Brick flick, which plays with the noir conventions in a High School setting, is faboo.

Oddly enough, LA Confidential may be my favorite noir, though it was filmed nearly 40 years after the genre ceased.

Double Indemnity is great. Lots of Hitchcock stuff has a noir feel to it, though it rarely is. Well..actually, I'd count Vertigo as noir.
