I've got two!
Hi Gail!
1) Have you ever dabbled, or considered dabbling in other writing fields -- namely, screenwriting or prose fiction?
2) Explain, if you could, for the love of god, the "swearing" in Welcome to Tranquility?

If you were the editor of a line of comics or the E-I-C of a new comic company and every creator was available what five writers and artists would you hire?
What did you think of Teen Titans#62?
Any chance of you getting your hands on Cassandra Cain anytime soon?

Bane's always been an interesting character, and my eyes definitely perked up when you decided to have him become one of the Secret Six. My questions are:
What attracted you to using Bane?
How is the team going to react to the guy who was actually able to beat the Batman?
Is he off the juice (venom?) once and for all?

Gail, love your posts and your comics.
John, love everything you do.
Anyway Gail, not sure what to ask you. Bendis, Fraction and others love to wax on pop-culture and the craft. Can you talk about your early days starting as a writer? I'm sure you've spoken about it elsewhere but nothing comes to mind and it could be edifying for those trying to break in.
1. What made you want to be a writer?
2. How did you start? What was your first published work? First sale? You had a column at CBR, what led to that?
3. First major work for Marvel - how did it happen? Had you pitched stuff before that? And what were your pitch experiences like?
Thanks so much guys,
Jon

Hi Guys , congratulations to the both for awesome stuff and thanks as well...My questions for Gail is about a comment she made about creating a latino / Puerto Rican character. Following the chaotic thread on the Bendis Board regarding Hispanics and comics. The thread attracted the writer herself (Tamora Pirece) of the White Tiger mini series, it got kind of messy. That being said Gail kinda hinted that one day she might create one.

Hi Gail,
You've worked with the controversial John Byrne. What was that experience like? :)

1. Is Fight Thread over? Did I win?
2. Who is more powerful Gus Beezer or Franklin Richards?
3. More Mad Hatter. Not a question but do it.

what was the first comic you: read? loved? collected? wrote for money?
and what do you think of them today?

1) What is the question you wanted some to ask you for this?
2) What is your favorite Vonnegut novel?

Hi Gail and John. I just have two questions for you both.
1. What is the hardest part either of you have had to deal with in terms of your jobs?
2. Do either of you share in the hatred of Crisis Of Infinite Earths reboots that were helmed by Byrne and Miller? I see many people slam them for what they did to Batman and Superman. So, I was wondering your opinions.

Hi Gail! Hi John!
1.) Gail, I loved your Birds of Prey run and liked the issues of Wonder Woman I read but I really love your take on the crazy comedy stuff like Agent X at Marvel. Even on the board where you continue your quest to take down that evil nogoodnik Derf Huddleton I think it shows that you have a natural affinity for that kind of quirkiness. So... any chance we'll see something like that from you at DC?
2.) Manazons?
3.) Your writing style is very distinct in the industry and I think you have a great ability to mix in drama, humor and kickass action in a single issue of a book. As far as the humor goes... how do you play it? Do you write the jokes down beforehand and write the scenes to setup the jokes or do you let the characters make the jokes according to the scene or do you do something else entirely?
And finally... because this is a thing going on on John's board... what's your favorite five movies from before 1985?
Thanks to the both of you for doing this. We really appreciate it.

Hello to you both! Some questions!
1. Is there a generic way you format your scripts or does it change from project to project? And if there is a generic format, how did it develop over time? Is it markedly different from the way you formatted your first scripts?
2. Is there a book you've done that you think encapsulates the essence of your writing style best?
3. What did you think of Jodi Picoult's Wonder Woman arc. I know it wasn't terribly well-received online and whatnot, and I personally wasn't a fan. What did you think and since you followed her arc, did you have much interaction with her?

Hey Gail, hey John. It was nice seeing you at WWC, and John hopefully we run into each other at Windy City Con and I'm looking forward to it. ;)
1 What tends to be your inspiration for the types of stories and humor you use for your stories and is it difficult for you to come up with story ideas?
2 What would you recommend for someone aspiring for writing to do? I know the basics but I want to know what techniques worked for you.
3 What books do you like to read from DC, Marvel, etc?
4 Are you really going to be doing haircuts at ECC this year
5 What's your favorite type of personality in a character and who's your favorite character that you're writing currently?
Thanks for answering my questions Gail and best of like to you in the future.
Why does Catman still have a cape? Blake has become so much more respectable under your care, yet he still inexplicably wears a cape. Would him ditching the cape just be too much of an admission on his part to having stolen Batman's gimmick, as well as revealing his own vanity? Or does it just look cool when he's jumping off shit?
I saw an attractive young lady the other day with a shirt that said "Girls make the best ninjas", has this statement been empirically validated?
Having a clearer perspective on the behind the scenes action at DC, what would you say is the most widely held misconception at the moment?
Does DC have a "house style" as far as the art and look of their mainstream titles goes?

hi gail,
just a few questions for you here.
1) loved welcome to tranquility. will we ever see anything more stories set in there?
2) is there a character that you love even half as much as bendis loves catman?
3) who would you say are your biggest influences, humor wise?
4) when you're writing, do you use anything to inspire you or get the creative juices flowing? (any type of music, or movies in the background or anything?)
you're one of my favorite writers gail, and i look forward to seeing you at emerald city this year.

hi guys, great work from both of you always, keep it up!
for ms. simone:
1) who are the artists that you liked drawing your stories best? is that the same list as the ones ones you like WORKING WITH best? (i guess just curious if your liking someone's art makes it easier to work with them...do you have an artist you love, but who it wasn't quite as fulfilling in a certain way when working with them, as it was with someone else who you enjoy their art okay, but the work process made you like it even better?)
(hmm, reading this i realize it looks like i am asking you to dish on how you don't like working with someone as much as someone else, so just answer however you like, maybe just who you love working with or whose art you love to read stories drawn by....)
2) once secret invasion settles down, any chance bendis will use you as a permanent hair-style-picker for janet van dyne?
thanks guys,

If you were writing X-Men, what would your take on Kitty Pryde be? Would it be drastically different than how she is characterized today or in the past? I ask this because in Chicago during the Marvel/DC panel you almost seemed a bit offended when someone said that Kitty Pryde is more popular than Wonder Woman.
How did your experience writing the Justice League Unlimited episode differ from writing a comic issue/arc? Would you be interested in writing more animation?
What did you think of the Birds of Prey tv show?
Thank you,
Josh Brown
Gail, I'm intrigued by Deadshot's method of consoling friends who have lost someone close to them. One question: did he also hire a stripper dressed as Parademon for Ragdoll after the last series?
Also, we've seen a lot of Batman and Superman rogues join the Secret Six, but don't you think it'd be cool to throw a few Flash Rogues into the mix? I realize Geoff's favorites are probably off-limits, but how about villains such as Doubledown or Magenta? I'm sure there'll be enough future casualties to make room for them. Or you could always change the name back to "Villains United" to allow for a larger roster.

Hi Gail,
If you were ever to write a large event book (say a Crisis or something) which characters could you see yourself using? Would you go big with it? Or small character moments with big effects? I ask mainly because I'd love to see a Gail Simone run event.
Also any interest in working on a DC direct DVD if it were offered cause I loved the episode of JLU you wrote.

Hey Gail, I have to say I'm just a dabbler when it comes to your work, but I've loved the issues of Wonder Woman if picked up that you penned Thanks for doing the interview.
Since you obviously come at writing from a female perspective, are you for the most part happy at how your male counterparts handle female characters? It is a male dominated industry and I'm sure at times that comes across in the portayal of female characters. Are there any male writers out there who you think are better than others regarding this subject?

Hi Gail, thanks for doing another round of questions, and thank you John for finally getting Gail into another wordballoon interview.
My questions are:
1. How did you enjoy some of your Secret Six characters appearances' prior to the new ongoing? Such as the return of Deadshot to the Suicide Squad by series creator John Ostrander, Paul's Harley issue of Detective explaining her exit from the team, and Salvation Run?
2. Any chance we will see Cheshire show up in your books again? You seem to like her a lot since you first used her in Birds of Prey and then again in Villains United.
3. Have you and George Perez talked about what you want to do for a Wonder Woman issue? And how flattering was it to hear someone like George in interview say he really enjoys your work and wanted to work with you in the first place?
4. Lastly, since you arrival to DC, Guz Beezer, a childrens title for Marvel was written by you. Do you think its gotten better now since than with the amount of all-ages material both companies have put out? And are you enjoying DC's new kids books like The Power of Shazam and Tiny Titans? In my opinion, I think they're very fun and appeal to all audiences.
And thanks again, Gail

Hey Gail, I'm a rather large fan of your work and it's also one of my first posts here on the jinxworld board and I'm happy I could start off like this, and John I'm a huge fan of Wordballoon you do a real service to the comic community, and give people tons of entertainment.
But on to my questions...
1) I recently read the new Secret Six first issue, and I absolutely adored it, the writing was amazing I love stories about villains, and hell you made Catman not only cool but buddy's with Deadsot. My question is what kind of mind set do you get into to write these characters opposed to writing Superman, Wonder Woman, or the Birds more heroic-heroes.
2) If you could work with the following artists on any project what would it be? Doug Mahnke, Matthew Clark, Adam Kubert, and Phil Hester (and forgive me if you've already worked with any of the previously mentioned)
3) And when will we see more Welcome to Tranquility? That book was fantastic and I'd love to see more.
Thanks for your time guy's I love both your works, and eagerly anticipate new issues of Secret Six and new episodes of Wordballoon.

Bit of a lurker, so hi y'all.
Gail, you've created so many new characters for almost every book you've written. Are they based off people you've met or may know, or perhaps even media darlings? If so, can you give us a few examples?
TomBelandTSSTG
09-18-2008, 04:20 PM
What is your favorite Tom Beland comic? I'll take my answer on the air.
And, more importantly, when will we be seeing Wonder Woman making out with Black Canary? And will there be fisting involved?

Gail,
If you know that there is an Astoria Oregon, and where it is, you are already ahead of Bendis!
1. I admit that I am a Marvel Zombie, but mostly it is because I find so much of the stuff at DC requires such heavy knowledge of who people are. I picked up the first issue of Secret Six and loved it. I didn't feel like I needed to know all the back story and enjoyed the interaction between the truly twisted characters. What is it that you do that is so different from so many other books at DC? How do you make a series accessible to the DCU novice?
2. If DC editorial would let you have free reign what project would you want to run with? Alternately, what is the craziest thing you have pitched that got initial interest?
Thanks for the great work by both of you.
John, you keep the days at work short.
Gail, you make me chuckle at the end of the long days.

Hi Gail and John,
1) I have been loving Wonder Woman so far and looking forward to whats coming up in the future (manazons). How far out do you have the title planned and will the effects of Final Crisis be shown in the book after Grant is finished?
2) Do you remember when writing Villians United the moment you realised the title and characters could keep going indefinetly and how did you convince Dan DiDio to ok the Secret Six ongoing.
Thanks for the great work and looking forward to whats coming next.

John, always a pleasure to hear these and Gail, I adore your work. Thank you both for doing this.
1.) Gail, what's the creepiest/oddest con experience you've had?
2.) Not necessarily a question per se, but that Nicola Scott is amazing (I'll turn it into a question)...right?
3.) Last album you bought and enjoyed?
Alan Mac
09-20-2008, 05:45 PM
Hi Gail and John. Big fan of both your works.
1. You've shown a real skill at being able to rehabilitate characters and in essence turn them around 180 degrees in a fluid manner. Black Canary and Catman in particular. Is there something that draws you to projects like that?
2. For both of you, what's your favourite detective from any fiction? And why?
3. I really enjoyed your run on the All New Atom. And a lot of that came from the seemingly strange marriage between your own style and Grant Morrison's ideas. How much of that were you given and how much was your own? It's almost easy from the outside to draw a line between the weirdness as his and the heart of the story and characters as yours. But it seems to put both of you into boxes. In essence, how mad-science are you, Gail? :)

Huge fan of your Agent X run. "Death rides a cute pale horse!" Is in my personal lexicon. On to the question.
1. Who are some of your favorite novelist?
2. Favorite Spider-Man issues?
3. Wonder Woman?
And John just wanted to say thanks for the "Life on Mars" reccomendation. It not only is an awesome show but it also got me onto a huge David Bowie kick.

Hiya Ms. Simone, loved how ya wrote the Mad Hatter in the first Secret Six mini, any chances he'll show up in the ongoing series, as a member or revenge seeking villain?
also: you've been given a time machine and are allowed to punch anyone in history.
who'd you hit and why?

Though I was sad to see you leave Marvel, I'm really digging what you've been doing at DC. I was wondering what appealed to you about each company and which characters from their respective stables you enjoyed playing with the most?
Thanks to you both for doing this.

Hi Gail, I've been a longtime fan of your work, thanks for taking the time to do this. I'll be quick about this.
1. Do you often miss writing Deadpool and Agent X? That was some of my favorite work from you.
2. Any plans to return to Rose and Thorn?
3. Were you disappointed with losing Knockout for Secret Six, or a blessing in disguise?
Thanks again, you are a classy dame.

Hi Gail ...I think you're really witty... love reading your posts on various subjects...
So questions :
1) I really liked the circle story...are you going to explore more of the amazons’ past?
2) Did you ever talk to Allan Heinberg about Wonder Woman?
3) I would like to see more of Diana Prince, does she have a life outside of the DoMA?
4) Is Donna Troy allowed in Paradise Island? Why have we seen so little of her? And she was acting strange…
5) What do you like about Nemesis?
6) When are we seeing Steve Trevor? Will there be a triangle with him , Tom and Diana?
I’m sorry if one of these was answered elsewhere…

Do you or have you ever used drugs? Do you have any funny drug stories from your drugged out druggy days on drugs?

Hello Gail,
I am a big fan and love the Secret Six, so I have a few Fanboy questions and a writing question.
1. My writing question is how would you write a scene set in surroundings toy are not familar with. For example, I am a New Yorker and beyond my neighborhood I have no knowledge of geography, but I want my story to take place somewhere else.
2. Now that Deadshot has a daughter and a bestfriend does he still have a death wish?
3. Is the mad hatter coming back, because rag doll needs a nemisis?

09-26-2008, 06:35 AM
Hey Gail, two questions
1) Where do you still stand on "Women in the refrigerators" in comics? Do you think things have gotten BETTER with women overall? Are there still kinks that need to be ironed out? And where would you place, if you've read it, the mis-use of the female Dr.Light in Green Arrow? Was that a perfect case of Women in the Refrigerator?
2) I'm sure you've heard of Peter David's plan to, when he was on Supergirl, make a Superman equivalent of Birds of Prey called Blonde Justice (Power Girl, Silver age Supergirl, and his Supergirl). Had that plan gone through do you think you probably would have had multiple, if any, interaction between your team (when you were writing BoP I mean) and his? Or would you have tried to keep them seperate?

Hi Gail,
1. Are their any other characters that you would love to bring into the spotlight in the DCU?
2. One of the main reasons I can not get my wife to read superhero comics is that she doesn't like the way women are dressed in them. It seems that its always a skimpy outfit or disproportionate bodies. The same can be said about the men, where they are dressed in skin tight outfits and have muscles on top of muscles. My question is, do you think that this is something that should be addressed or do you think that people who do not like this particular trend in superhero comics should read other genres? I think it is certainly an option to read something else instead, but the thought of telling someone "oh this isn't for you. go read something else" is disturbing to me. Your take?
Thanks for doing this!
-Miguel

Hey Gail, Another Deadpool/Agent X fan here. I would ask you when you're coming back to the Marvel U or comment on how much I liked Secret Six but everyone else already did that. Two quick questions
What Marvel villain would you "steal" for Secret Six if you could?
Was there anything in Deadpool or Agent X that you wanted to do that got turned down by editorial? Do you miss Deadpool?

It's always a pleasure to listen to these and I'm very anxious for this one since I enjoy Gail's posts on the board but unfortunately I have not been an active follower of her work. The random issues I have read I have always enjoyed and I'm eager to really immerse myself in your run on Birds of Prey and Secret Six.
For my questions the first one is in direct relation to this.
1) As someone who is looking to be introduced into all things Simone, personally which of your works would you point to as a shining example of your best work, the one that you would put atop your resume?
2) Were you as "stimulated" as most of us were by the debate between Kirkman and Bendis? What is your stance on the issues raised by this debate? and are you still nauseous from that haunting image of grizzly bear porn with Kirkman and Bendis embracing and rubbing tummies?
3) Were you or Bendis actually the source of the quote falsely attributed to Anne Hathaway in regards to that act that makes you feel like a woman in a very special way?
4) Lastly but not leastly. Your stance on the use of women in comics is well documented and well supported. With Wonder Woman as one of the Trinity for DC why is it her comic continues to underwhelm when it comes to sales? Do you blame the use of the character or the male mentality of the medium?
Do you feel there are enough strong female characters in comics and if not, what more do you think should be done? Is the issue the way women are portrayed or perhaps a lack of want within the audience? I enjoy stories with strong female characters, more often than not written by Rucka, and am always mystified with the lack of success of many of these characters find in the marketplace. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the subject.
I look forward to your answers and will be eagerly listening. Thank you for your time and for your always entertaining posts on the board!

I've got four.
1. Now that Johns, Morrison, and Meltzer have done their crises, Waid's moved on to Boom! Studiios and Rucka has decided not to renew his DC exclusive, do you see yourself as the frontrunner to write the next big company wide event? Are you even interested in writing the big event book?
2. Who do you think is a rising star in the DCU? Writer and/or artist.
3. If you could steal an artist from Marvel to work with, who would the artist be and what book would you want to work with them on.
4. Are you afraid that Geoff Johns will end up writing every book in the DCU.....at the same time?

Hi gail!
I just wanted to mention this...i was at the mid-ohio-con this weekend. while visiting with art baltazar as he was doing sketches, a guy behind me in line asked art how he felt about you "stealing" his tiny titans idea for the secret six. art didn't know about it, so the guy mentioned how someone on your board making little cartoony versions of that, and how you wanted to write such a series...it was one of those "this guy's trying to start a fight" moments...art just smiled and said how great you are, and that was the end of that. i just got a kick out of it, it seemed like the guy thought art b.was going to get mad, and art is so laid-back...good times. :)
keep up the great work! :)

hi john, another great one (other than the acknowledged audio difficulties, but seems like you did the best you could with it). someone asked above about people getting skipped over, and while i saw you guys moved around some questions, i think mine was skipped. not that it's a big deal, but i was wondering if there's any suggestions you can give to get questions to be more likely to be used. i know some people had ones in common with others, but i think mine was a smidge different (about whether working with artists who she gets along with makes her like their art more, or something like that :))...maybe just not something she wanted to discuss, her preference of some people to others...but any suggestions? just curious what i could do to be more likely to get on the list. :)
btw, if i somehow missed my name and i WAS on there i apologize, but didn't think so. heh!
keep up the great work!

Really enjoying this interview, but a question from a non-Simpsons viewer (well, seen about three eps). What was that Gail was saying about some lame episode involving, er, Gucci? What was so bad about it?
And how sad that I misheard something and thought Gail had invented a new female spy genre, 'lesbianage'.
Andn anyone know why the Word Balloon Blogger page asks for comments, then doesn't allow you to actually make any, even with a Blogger account?

Really enjoying this interview, but a question from a non-Simpsons viewer (well, seen about three eps). What was that Gail was saying about some lame episode involving, er, Gucci? What was so bad about it?

hi john, another great one (other than the acknowledged audio difficulties, but seems like you did the best you could with it). someone asked above about people getting skipped over, and while i saw you guys moved around some questions, i think mine was skipped. not that it's a big deal, but i was wondering if there's any suggestions you can give to get questions to be more likely to be used. i know some people had ones in common with others, but i think mine was a smidge different (about whether working with artists who she gets along with makes her like their art more, or something like that :))...maybe just not something she wanted to discuss, her preference of some people to others...but any suggestions? just curious what i could do to be more likely to get on the list. :)
btw, if i somehow missed my name and i WAS on there i apologize, but didn't think so. heh!
keep up the great work!

What was your question and I'll answer it now?

hi guys, great work from both of you always, keep it up!
for ms.
2) once secret invasion settles down, any chance bendis will use you as a permanent hair-style-picker for janet van dyne?
thanks guys,
-bob
there ya go gail....
it's POOCHY, not 'GUCCI.'
Gotcha, thanks, I'll look it up.
And after you've been to Ireland, remember us folk in Bony Scotland ;-)
John it amazes me on how you have such great chemistry with each of the people you have on your show. You bring out the true personality in each person and you definitely did that with Gail Simone. I met her at the last NY comic con and she is such a talented writer and a really good person too.
