View Full Version : What other podcasts do people listen to?

Just curious.

Comic-book related:
I'm hooked on Fanboy Radio also. Scott Hinze is such a geek, I love it!

I check out Around Comics every once in a while if they have something that interests me...

Some of the Spider-Man Crawlspace 'casts are fun if you're a die-hard Spidey fan like me. The creator interview ones are pretty good, with all questions submited by MB posters, but most of the regular podcasts are pretty lame. The host, Brad Douglas is a television newsguy in Missouri, so he knows how to interview, but he has a forced laugh that he lets loose with every thirty seconds that drives me insane. Still, it gave me a chance to ask Roger Stern some questions, so I'll always remember that...

I love Alter Ego comic-cast, but I've found I have to listen to it that week, otherwise it gets too dated. I met the guys at WWC this year, and they were a pretty cool group...

Non-comic book related:
Onion News Network has some of the funniest two minute video podcasts you'll find anywhere...

The Dead Show from KOPN in Missouri is a must listen every week. At least one, sometimes two, Grateful Dead live sets every friday. Love it!

Ricky Gervais' free podcasts on Itunes. Too cheap to pay for his regular stuff, but he still posts enough free stuff to make me happy...

Any others?

For comics podcasts (word balloon is a given!):

I listen to Tom vs. The Flash, which is hilarious.

I also listen to the Collected Comics Library because I buy almost all my comics in trade (occasionally by subscription).

I listen to a ton of other podcasts, mostly about tech and RPGs, notably:

The RPGObjects podcast (from the fine makers of modern RPGs).

The Giant Bombcast (the best video game podcast running imo).

And Buzz out loud.

Other than Wordballoon...

Fanboy Radio (http://fanboyradio.libsyn.com/) is classic. Love the diverse podcast interviews... including seemingly rare ones like Alan Moore or J. Michael Strazynski.

I really got into Geektress (geektress.com) recently. Another podcast for comic book fixes along with TV shows.

There's also Screw Attack's SideScrollers (http://screwattack.com/SideScrollers) and The Game Heroes' various audio and video podcasts (http://www.thegameheroes.com/) for gaming geekness.

Paul Dini & Misty Lee (http://www.dinicartoons.com/forum/tags/podcast/) don't update as much as I'd like (I assume they're busy) but they're a fun couple to listen to.

Of course, Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's SModcast (http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/smodcast/). It's seriously an hour of comedy gold. I never laughed so hard while listening to a podcast. If you like Kevin's movies, these are right up your alley.

SModcast is always great.
Stephen Fry's Podgrams
Fanboy Radio is hard to listen sometimes because Scott's voice is very annoying especially when he starts to scream.

SModcast is great, but then I'm a HUGE Kevin Smith Fanboy.
Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me From NPR
The Prairie Home Companion News From Lake Wobegon Podcast
This American Life (although I haven't listened much since May)

SModcast gets the most play though. I've listened to most episodes 3 or 4 times. Never gets old (to me).

Dr. Kat'z "Hey We're Back" (http://heywereback.blogspot.com/)
This is a great podcast that is even better if you imagine it is squiggle-vision.

Law and Disorder (http://lawanddisorder.org/)
Excellent and informative podcast on constitutional rights issues. A must for the concerned citizen in these concerning times.

Does anyone know a podcast for writers or creative writing?

Well, if you're interested in screenwriting there is Creative Screenwriting Magazine's podcast. It's long form interviews with screenwriters of whatever films are in the theatres.

I too really dig The Business and The Treatment. The Business is one of the smartest shows on Earth, really.

Never Not Funny (http://www.pardcast.com/) is a long freewheeling conversation with different comedians, hosted by Jimmy Pardo. They give you the first twenty minutes for free and the rest for pay subscribers (the episodes are usually an hour and a half long).

Wordballoon
Smodcast
KCRW The Treatment

I used to listen to more comic podcasts like Comic Geek Speak and Fanboy Radio but I got fed up with them.

However I'm a huge Potter and Twilight nerd so I love Pottercast, Mugglecast and Imprint.

Hmm, my last attempt to post has failed. Bugger. But i did go to put that on Shannon's other thread and it may be more appropreate here, so gonna try again.

Hi Shannon, and all! Newly registered to Jinxworld but please don't snub me for that reason!! Bearing in mind i'm sure you will have heard of some of these before, I'm gonna list some of my favourite podcasts. Although Wordballoon is natch top of the list!

Mark Kermode's Film Reviews from BBC Radio 5 Live (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73802698)
New UK film releases reviewed in a pithy fashion by the self-styled Exorcist Guru. Latest episode has a great rant at Rocknrolla

Daily Mayo from BBC Radio 5 Live (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=128954728)
A bit shorter, daily segments from the radio show. Interviews with media types, UK politicians and such. I always find this worth a listen even if I don't know who the interviewee is.

Music Week from BBC Radio 6 Music (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=262251774)
Oddly, a music podcast with all the music taken out due to copywrite laws. Interviews and talk on today's music scene. That is, decent music.

Creative Screenwriting Magazine (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=77837603)
Only just found this one, through Augie I think. Great intelligent interviews on the writing process. Spoiler filled episode on Dark Knight.

Sidebar (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=252840901)
My other favourite comic podcast. More art-centric interviews. Great skottie young episode recently.

Stephen Fry's Podgrams (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=274722189)
Not too many of these, but actor (etc) Stephen Fry is a real institution in the UK so anything he has to say goes a long way! Plus, he's a Mac addict.

Resonance FM: Panel Boarders (http://podcasts.resonancefm.com/archives/category/shows/panel-borders)
Couldn't find the iTunes link for this one even though I'm subscribed to it. John has mentioned it before, on his Facebook page I think. Some more great comic interviews from the British stable of creators.

There's a podcast where this author interviews novel writers and the like. She's not the best interviewer IMO, but there are some good ones. It's called Writers on Writing with Barbara DeMarco-Barrett.
Also, American Writers is pretty good. Creative Screenwriting also has their own podcast. While I like a lot of writing podcasts, I find my biggest complaint with them is that a lot of them lack interesting interviewers. Proves that it really isnt' easy to keep a listeners attention...

Ah, I should mention Marvel's official podcast (http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.1622.Marvel_Podcast_Central). Some are really brief but there are some gems. The Mini Marvels episode is really good!

And DC Comics has a great archive of their convention panels as podcasts (http://dccomics.com/dcu/downloads/?action=podcast). You'll never fear missing a DC panel ever again! My favorite is the 52 panel were someone inappropriately presses Greg Rucka why Caucasian writers are writing ethnic characters. Grant Morrison joking screams at the guy, "I’m not a white man, I’m a Scot. My country has been ruled by fucking English for 500 years SO DON'T TOKENIZE ME!"

That and Grant enters the panel like Iggy Pop. It cracks me up.

In all honesty, even with Pressfield being interviewed, I almost DIDN'T LISTEN because of how completely moronic the name is (and you know how much of a fan of the War of Art I am, so that's saying something!). I mean, WTF?!? indeed!

Overall I like it... except the name kills me, involuntary eye roll every time I load the damn thing...

I'm pretty lite on my podcast listening.

I, of course, love WordBalloon (and have now five MP3 CDs worth of burned episodes to prove it!), and on the shorter, but still insightful side of things, I dig comiXology's It Came Out On Wednesday podcast.

And, for just plain randomness, pointlessness and hilarity, I'll put on It's All Geek to Me when I'm wrapped up in tedious stuff like cleaning or.... cleaning.

Apart from Word Balloon I listen to quite a few podcasts:-

Around Comics

Comic News Insider

Geek Brunch - which is a long slow rambly podcast where they talk about all things, and eventually comics, movies and TV. If you're taking a long drive this is ideal, as most episodes are about 2-3 hours.

Quiet! Panelologists at Work - the funniest UK comics podcast around, 2 guys talking comics and related issues, very tongue in cheek.

Comics Playground - a great all ages comics podcast, two guys who both have young children and want comics that will appeal to their children that they can also enjoy.

Geek Syndicate - two brits talking all things geek, comics, movies, TV and games.

Oh, and since its a podcast thread........a small plug for Comic Book Outsiders, a podcast I co-host, focusing on bringing attention to comics outside the mainstream. A lot of people talk about the Big 2, and the majority of books I read come from elsewhere, so we try to get people to look at comics outside their comfort zone.

Other than Word Balloon I listen to quite a few now. I needed some more to listen to at work or when I'm busy and need something to listen to at home. Sometimes it takes a bit to get into a podcast as you get to know everyone's tastes and how things are set up. Then there are the times that podcast's crossover so it feels more like a community of similar podcasts.

Ifanboy - Been listening to this one for awhile, always enjoy it even though I don't always agree with their opinions. I think I usually like the video shows even more.

Around Comics - Usually listen to every show, covers plenty of topics.

Comicgeekspeak - I usually check the topic before I listen, sometimes they are totally opposite to my tastes or don't appreciate things that way I do which can make me less interested. The worst is when they unprepared and you just hear the pages of a magazine flipping as they find something to talk about.

Fanboy Radio - Probably the first and the longest I've listened to one podcast. Sometimes the hosts are too fanboyish and like everything a bit too much. It has its good shows and bad.

The Crank Cast - A relative new one for me. The aimlessness can sometimes get to me.

Pipeline Comics Podcast - Sometimes a shorter podcast is good and one that highlights new comics coming out is different and interesting.

Collected Comics Library - Think I found out about this one from Pipeline. The perfect companion podcast to Pipeline that covers collected editions.

Spider-Man Crawl Space - Interviews are enjoyable. The others are a bit crazy as some the guys seem like hardcore Spider-Man fans, which is both good and bad.

Comicpants - Right up there with my favourite podcasts. A bunch of comic fans goofing around and focusing on a topic. Love their reviews on their website and their opinions are pretty close to my own.

11'O Clock comics Podcast - A new addition. Covers a whole lot of comics while they are drinking. Funny and enjoyable.

I've been listening to Around Comics (which is always a hoot when John shows up, though it's also pretty funny to just hear him laughing about something or doing impersonations in the background), iFanboy, Comic Geek Speak, and Word Balloon for the last year. I really should branch out more, but I really don't have the time for more podcasts.

Oh! And Fanboy Radio is what got me into the whole comics podcast thing, so hats off to them, even if Scott is a bit...um..shrill for my taste.

I listen to almost all of the Word Balloon podcasts.

Fanboy Radio if I like the guests.

Sound Opinions every week. It's a local (Chicago) show but it's syndicated around the country and they post the episodes online a couple days after they air. If you're into music at all, you should check it out.

I tried Around Comics a couple years ago when they first started but they were unfocused and too long for me to bear. I should give it another try to see if they've tightened up a bit.

This American Life - Didn't like it at first, now I can't go on without it.

The Lost Podcast - When it's new, it's fun. Lindelof and Cuse talk about the show without giving away stuff. They mainly talk about details people may have missed and it really makes me think the show is way more fleshed out than people think it is.

Book Chat with Rainn Wilson - So fucking random. Too bad it seems that they won't be doing it anymore.

Flight of the Conchords - Mainly for the original Mel video blogs...hilarious stuff

The Moth - The best non-Word Balloon (;)) podcast out there. This is so immensely entertaining and gratifying it's not funny.

Live Concerts from All Songs Considered - Free concerts from huge names. Awesome.

SModcast - Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier talk about whatever's on their mind. Usually pretty funny stuff, but sometimes comedy gold. Their discussion on Helen Keller is amazing.

The Soup - Free vids of Soup Clips

I think they have although their show structure isn't all that rigid either.

Lately they'll just talk about what they liked for that week and discuss whatever topics are on their mind regarding the industry or even random chatter. I find those guys (Chris, Tom, Sal, John, Norton, Skottie and other guests) really enjoyable although whenever they talk about the independent stuff I lost some interest since outside of Criminal (which I'm trade waiting nowadays) I don't pick up a whole lot.

Has anyone tried fxguide's podcast? They're great interviews with artists in the visual effects industry. They have two episodes on the Iron Man film, including one dedicated to the suit's HUD. They also did episodes on Superman Returns and X3, among others of note to comic fans.

I am starting to listen to some more podcast now, still testing the waters.

IGN Comics Smash! - anyone else listen to this? Its good, but I wish they wouldn't discuss comic movies and tv shows as much. Spend more time on the comics themselves! :)

Word Balloon - of course, good stuff

iFanboy - These guys are funny, and can appeal to a whole range of people

Around Comics - Can get pretty crazy with so many people, but its fun

Tom Vs. The Flash - This guy is awesome. Tempted to listen to his JLA run too.

Comic Geek Speak - Too many silent moments in this podcast, but generally fun and a knowledgeable group.

I've gotten into Comics on Comics (http://www.comicsoncomics.com/), which is a great video podcast where professional comedians talking with creators like Christos Gage, Geoff Johns, Greg Weisman, David Gerrold, Wendy Pini & Brian Lynch.

The recent episode is really good since it has Gregg Hurwitz and Mark Evanier. Lots of great funny moments. If you are in the LA area, try to see them live when they film at a local comic shop. But at least you can watch all their episodes online.

Yeah lately they've been going a bit too overboard with the movie/tv stuff as I wished that they would focus more on comics talk since I enjoy their takes on that more.

But it's a good show.

Comic Geek Speak - Too many silent moments in this podcast, but generally fun and a knowledgeable group.
Hah!

They are legendary for their awkward pauses. I really dig their show but I only download the episodes that appeal to me or that I would be into, I wished they did less indy stuff and focused a bit more on the big 2 but otherwise very fun podcast. In fact probably in my top 3 or 4.

I listen to a lot of podcasts due to my long commute to work. Word Balloon is a favorite of mine of course. I listen to Ifanboy although Ron gets on my nerves and his tastes in comics leaves a lot to be desired. In fact Josh it the only one who I can really relate to. It's sad when they have the pick of the week and you know it's Ron's pick because it's a typical WTF choice. "The Killing Joke came out this week? It's okay but the best comics was X-babies #1, I cried tears of joy at the end of it." If I could smack someone through my ipod he'd be on my hit list, followed by Scott and Oliver from Fanboy radio which I used to listen to but had to stop.

They love ANYTHING comic related. They RAVED about how great Superman Returns was, how great X-men The Last Stand was, and I think even Ghost Rider got the high shrill treatment. I can't tolerate that much gushing and the non-spoiler talking about things that are two to three weeks old because Oliver can't be bothered to check a movie or comic out on time is annoying. How can you talk about something without talking about anything in it?

I listen to Comic Geek Speak if the subject appeals to me, the same for Fanboy Face off. I also check out Pulp Secret although they haven't put up a new one in a few weeks. I was very disappointed with Comic Book Savant which had great topics I was interested in but the host has the worst delivery and voice I've heard on a podcast not to mention NO PREPARATION! He actually pauses and looks stuff up online while taping. I wish someone else would take his subjects and do them the way they should be done.

Those are the Comic related podcasts I can think of off the top of my head. I've tried most of them including Around Comics but these are the only ones that I've stuck with due to personal preferences.

Word Balloon was the first podcast I ever subscribed to and I now listen to WB, QPAW!, Geek Syndicate, Comic Book Outsiders (which I've been interviewed on and gues co-hosted) and Around Comics without fail. Been travelling less with work lately so have dropped Comic Racks (sorry ladies), Eleven O Clock Comics and Comic News Insider aside from when I get some extra time.

I am pretty good friends with all the guys on the UKPCG scene, either that or a stalker.

I listen to a lot of podcasts sometimes but these are in my regular rotation.

1. Comic Geek Speak (good old comic talk)
2. Filmspotting (in depth movie reviews)
3. The Force-Cast (scratches my Star Wars itch)
4. ifanboy (the first podcast I ever listed to)
5. QPAW! (crazy podcast from across the pond)
6. WNYC's Radio Lab (boggles my mind)
7. Word Balloon (comic related interviews at their best)

Things besides WB I subscribe to:

Zombie Astronaut's Frequency of Fear (http://frequencyoffear.com/) - Podcast devoted to horror/sci-fi audio, especially old time radio. Episodes are generally portmanteaus, with three OTR (or whatever) eps that follow some particular theme (vampires, plants, dentistry, etc.) per podcast, interspersed by a running skit featuring the host characters that also follows the theme. Usually features a pretty good selection of OTR, and the host skits are pretty well done. Surprisingly good production values overall, given that none of the guys involved are (I assume) getting paid for it. Updates every other week.

The Children's Hour of Knowledge (http://www.hourofknowledge.com/) - The psychotic and incompetent Profoctor Davey hosts a low-grade children's science radio show alongside his long-suffering straightman puppet pal, Bongo McTweedlepants.

You caught the part where this is supposed to be a radio show that features puppets, right? Just checking...

Anyway, it updates weekly (although they've taken the last couple of weeks off, to get ready for their "season 2"), and only lasts about 5 or 10 minutes per episode, but I always enjoy 'em for the duration. The guy who does the voice of Bongo does the voices of their various weekly "guest puppets", and is actually quite good at it.

The Cthulhu Podcast (http://cthulhupodcast.blogspot.com/) - A podcast devoted to Lovecraft/Lovecraftiana (duh), and also the 1920's (less-duh). The usual format (which doesn't hold 100 percent) is that the host will educate us by reading some kind of article having to do with the 1920's (whatever the hell subject he feels like, near as I can tell; there's no tie-in with the "story" segments, apparently), play a bit of music from the time-period, and then read or have a story read. His qualifications for stories are that they are "horror"-ish and take place in the '20's, or that they are mythos-related (in which case they can take place whenever). The stories are either original listener submissions or straight readings from Lovecraft or H.G. Wells or the like. I generally find the episodes interesting. Updates weekly, more-or-less.

I've never posted here before; please be gentle.

I was just skimming the board when it occurred to me that iFanboy posted a lengthy interview with Bendis (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/iFanboy_-_Episode__92_-_Brian_Michael_Bendis) today, and that it didn't look like anybody had pointed that out to the Bendis board yet. Now someone has. Good times.

Spider-Man Crawl Space
10-17-2008, 12:07 AM
Some of the Spider-Man Crawlspace 'casts are fun if you're a die-hard Spidey fan like me. The creator interview ones are pretty good, with all questions submited by MB posters, but most of the regular podcasts are pretty lame. The host, Brad Douglas is a television newsguy in Missouri, so he knows how to interview, but he has a forced laugh that he lets loose with every thirty seconds that drives me insane. Still, it gave me a chance to ask Roger Stern some questions, so I'll always remember that...

Rufus,
Any suggestions on how to make my show less "lame" when it's just the regulars and the message board questions?

Wordballoon was the first comics podcast I listened to.
And I guess John dropped enough Around Comics love throughout the years that I slowly gravitated to them and then it was all over: Suddenly started listening to 11 O'Clock, CBQ and even the Crank Cast. In other words, all the Chicago podcasters that took part in the 24 hour podcast (which I listened to about two months ago). I've yet to move away from that lot and frankly don't know where to start, although I know iFanboy are the ones trying to make a full-time career of it. Would appreciate any recommendations: It makes cooking and cleaning things I look forward to.

Word Balloon was the first real one I listened to.
Creative Screenwriting - a must listen for any aspiring screenwriters such as myself
The Treatment - Elvis Mitchell
Fanboy Radio - some really good, rare interviews
Geekson - They cover a lot I don't follow (gaming, etc.) but every so often they have a really great episode (the one with Joss Whedon was very cool)

"Greatest Movie Ever" hosted by the Almighty Gooberzilla. It's on iTunes, and it introduced me to a lot of quality (and not so quality) flicks I never would have checked out otherwise, like Jacob's Ladder and The Devil's Backbone (but especially Streets of Fire). His co-host is most frequently his mom, which is both entertaining and endearing. What impresses me the most about the guy is that it's clear he has a great education in film and film criticism, but most of his favorite movies are the kind of stuff professional critics turn their noses up at. John, I know you like both classic movies and B-movies, so maybe this is something you might want to check out.

I actually have to apologize for this. After giving Fanboy sometime, it has really grown on me. I also have to say that Scott has really grown on me to. His passion and enthusiasm for comics is a true joy even though I do not always agree with some of his opinions.

I just started listening to Boom Studios' "15 Minutes w/ Mark Waid." So far, it's not too bad. The chemistry between Waid and his editors is interesting, but not necessarily the most engaging. Really it's only worth the listen if you like Waid or are interested in the opinions of an EiC.
