howdy John, i've listened to various podcast with you and read the interview with lord retail when he talked to you and IIRC the other interviews were about your interests and non podcast related questions. i was wondering if i could ask a couple of podcast/word balloon related questions. however, if you decide to keep the mystique up i completely understand. i was listening to the bendis tapes part 2 today and just had a few questions pop into my head about all the work you put into these podcasts.
in no particular order:
1. when interviewing your subject how much conversation is actually taped versus how much is actually heard? i know the bendis tapes run hours in podcast form but are also edited down before posted.
2. which do you prefer more, asking your subject questions that you've prepared or do you like the bendis tape format where board members come up with the questions and you kinda play off them?
3. what is the process of getting a podcast online? how much time passes between the day of the interview and the day you upload the podcast online?
4. how long does it take to edit an interview?
5. i'm sure you contact people all the time for interviews but how often do people contact you for an interview?
i'm sure there are more but i'm blanking right now. it'd be very interesting to learn some insight on what you do. i have about a forty five minute drive into and home from work, and during work i have a two hour supply run that gives me lots of time to listen to various things, and every morning i turn my computer on to see if there is a new word balloon to download and listen to at some point during my daily drives.
thanks in advance if you decide to answer these. keep up the excellent work. very much looking forward to the bendis tapes part 3 tomorrow morning.

1. usually 99%. The only things I regularly edit out are UHMS, AHHS stutters etc. that ends up getting rid of 1-3 minutes.
However if a creator realizes they've said something they shouldn't have , like mentioning a book they know their publisher would rather stay un-announced, I've removed that segement. I'm not here to get someone in trouble with their publisher.
2. both are fine. I work from a list of books, or subject i want to hit , and let the conversation flow in whatever direction it does.
3. it depends. if i'm sitting on a hot news story I have turned an interbview around and posted in the same night.
or like right now, I have 2 interviews that have been "in the can" for a few weeks. I do usually try to turn one around within 4 days of tapping it, but aug-sept has been very busy.
my day job sometimes can turn into overtime hours, and that can contribute to taking a lot longer to finish a podcast.
4. usually it takes 2 hours to edit a 1 hr interview , because i'm going through it slowly to make it flows smoother. i also always have to eq, filter, and amplify the guest's channel which can take 15-20 minutes.
5. lots of creators do e-mail me about their books. my only caveat is i have to like the book to want to talk about it, so I ask unknowns and newbies to send me their stuff first, and I'll decide whether I want to do a show or not.
at cons roaming around artist alley, i try to do a few more small press books before having read the finished product, , and some creators have followed up to ask for full blown interviews.
some have been on longer and others I've turned down, explaining they got a spotlight on a con show , but frankly I didn't like the book after reading it.
harsh? maybe. but this is what I do, instead of "reviews" .
I do also tell those who don't get on for a full show to feel free to send me any other books they do in the future , because I might like their next project.

first and foremost, thanks very much for taking the time to read and answer my questions. you're a good man, sir.
as i stated i was listening to bendis tapes part 2 today and just got to thinking about how much hard work these probably are, being that it's not your day job. i'm sure they don't seem like work because you're doing something you love and get to talk to intersting folks whom i'm sure you have great respect for.
i continue to look forward to future episodes and will continue to do my part to spread the word about the show among my friends, both comic fans and non comic fans.
thanks again

hi john!
how did you come to get such a loose, anything goes format in certain interviews? jeez, i could listen to you and fraction do huston and orson welles all day, but at what point in wordballoon history(or was it from the start) did you go "hmm, i'll leave all this stuff in!"? i just imagine some other podcaster who interviewed creators at home hearing your interviews, and going, "shit, you mean i could've left all that in?" ha.
my other question was, what talk topic do you do in your radio job, and is there anywhere online we can listen to that work as well? you have a very likable approach in the podcast, so if your other stuff is similar, i bet i'd enjoy hearing some of that too.
keep up the good work!

thanks bob,
my current radio gig is making commercials.
i did spend a good portion of my radio career in sports talk, but haven't been doing that since 2006. i'm hoping doing word balloon will eventually lead me back to doing talk radio.
learning how to interview has been a trial and error journey for most of my broadcast career.
that, and frankly when watching con panels, I always liked to hear what TV film music etc influences various creators.
what do they get out of the pop culture they consume?

So when are you going to pitch a book or pluck an artist from the board and do a webcomic or something? I mean, a guy doesn't talk about comics as long as you without coming up with a few ideas. And hey, if you are afraid it'll turn out to be a stinker and you'll look silly, use a pseudonym. I've heard you shy away from admitting you have some ideas on the podcast before...

I like watching Baseball Football & Boxing.
Boxing is my sport of expertise , from the standpoint of having done P-B-P , and reporting from top fights from 1989-2005
here's the longer answer
i'm not a sports junkie , not in any fantasy leagues, football pools, basketball brackets, NOTHING.
sports was my job . after my first few years in radio as a rock dj, i wanted to be in talk. had the news stations been hiring i would've tried there.
that said, for 15 years i watched and hosted radio shows talking about all the major and college sports (even hockey & NASCAR eew) suffering through sad losing years in everything but the blessed BULLS, who made the winters into spring seasons happy times.
i had more fun making fun of sports in parody songs and commercials.
in fact the new WB ep will illustrate some of these sports parodies.

Hi John, I like the fact the music you introduced for the 'Late Night' bru/fraction episode has stuck around and become part of the show. Is it a particular piece of music or just a rights-free loop?
I hear a bunch of music clips on other podcasts; do you know if there is there a legal limit on the amount of a song you can put in before getting slapped down?
Thanks!

if the bears play like they did last sunday all season long they will be a playoff team. haven't really looked at the panthers.
i'm a cub fan and the chances for a subway series are slim, but not impossible.

i felt there were already enough good boxing websites out there.
by 2006, i really felt boxing hit a massive decline from a US interest POV.
the contender was, to me one of the nails in the coffin.a reality show about club fighters is more interesting than covering real contenders and champions?
yuck.
i'll stick to occasional observations here.

I commute 3 hours round trip to work everyday and more often than not that journey has me listening to your word balloons on my ipod. I used to think I knew alot about movies but my knowledge pales in comparison to the obscure nuggets you pull out especially when going back and forth with Brubaker. I have a feeling you won't divulge this but as is normal, I'm curious if you have had a negative experience with any of your interview subjects or even with a creator you admired and wanted to interview? We've all had that experience where someone we admired fell far short of expectations in person. You can even omit names if you have a story to share of an experience.
I'm also wondering if anyone has turned down the possibilty of being interviewed by you? I'm dying for a Word Balloon with Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Neil Gaiman, James Robinson, Todd McFarlane, and Rob Liefeld would you be game to do any of these and have you tried to get any of these creators? Have you ever interviewed someone whose work you weren't much of a fan of? Is this why we haven't heard Liefeld on there yet?

no real negative experiences as i was interviewing them
the only guest who seemed a little annoyed was marv wolfman, who wanted to take a bathroom break, but tolerated my questions and still seemed happy at the end of the chat.
only warren ellis, chris claremont and john romita sr turned me down.
i'm hoping i just caught romita sr on a bad day.
not being a big x-men reader i don't really care if i talk to claremont, and ellis was brief but polite when he said no thanks.
rob liefeld and i will talk when one of his new marvel books start. loeb introduced us, and he said he does listen to word balloon. we did a video interview in ny this yr, that newsarama never got around to editing. i want to talk about his kilraven series with kirkman.
haven't really tried to get todd yet. when his kirman thing starts , i'll bug him.
moore may take alittle while, but i think i'll get him.

It's also nice to hear that you haven't had any negative experiences. With the number of interviews you've conducted the numbers are in favor of at least a few. As a Red Sox fan who had to wrestle with this question, I hope you Cubbies get your moment in the sunshine as well. Most of the tools are there to remain a contender hopefully the last couple you need to become champions will fall into place sooner rather than later. like i told tim, i love the classics
the 30's-40's universal, the 50's-60's hammer,
the aip poe films
i don't read horror, unless you count steve niles cal mcdonald works in prose and comics.
i loved buffy and angel, but that's hero fiction. i think of sam rami stuff in the same way
the slasher era did nothing for me, and the current variations don't speak to me.
i did like the first 2 re-animator films, and some alien/horror stuff
i have been impressed by the succsess of the saw filmmakers, and their story gimmick. same with eli roth, but i'm still not a fan of the films.

Hey John,
I know you're a busy guy, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your interviews still with the comic thread but dealing also with the film and television animation side of things. Those were very informative, Im typing fast at work so I can't quite find the name of the Casting Director you interviewed some months ago, but that interview was very interesting and gave us a look at the casting side of comics and what the process is. Do you have any more of those planned for this year or next year?
Thanks again for the great work.

Gino's East or Bacci Pizza?
---Plus what toppings?
both are good, i guess of the two i'd pick bacci, cause i've had it more recently...
but lou malnatti's and pizzeria uno are the pizza kings of the city.
i like sausage spinach and mushrooms, but i' rather they keep the sausage in pieces, not the 'patty of meat" that surrounds the entire crust.
my dad owned bella's pizza from 1955-1976, and he truly had a fine thin crust pizza. it's now a giordano's on west irving park rd on the nw side of chgo.
really though in chicago there are dozens of great local pizza joints.
same goes for hot dogs

Hi John, I like the fact the music you introduced for the 'Late Night' bru/fraction episode has stuck around and become part of the show. Is it a particular piece of music or just a rights-free loop?
I hear a bunch of music clips on other podcasts; do you know if there is there a legal limit on the amount of a song you can put in before getting slapped down?
Thanks!
-Tom
New to the board, reading this post (which is really old, so I'm sorry to add info so long after the fact)...Though it is a 'rights free loop', John's music is based on an old Coltrane tune called 'Equinox'.
The word on the street (got this from 'This Week in Media) about legality is: 17 seconds, not in the foreground.
I do a music commentary podcast, and all the examples I use I get from the examples that play on the iTunes store so that it if ever comes up I can say "the only thing I played can be heard for free anytime"...but I'm waiting to have more than 100 listeners to see if the recording industry shuts me down.

You've got the BEST comic podcast out there. Amazing job!
I haven't surfed this board enough, so forgive me if you've answered this before:
How did you get started interviewing comic professionals? Did your radio experience help your credibility? Or did they just trust you because you're such a nice guy?

i think it was being at the right place in the right time.
when i started in 2005, there were only a couple of comic book talk shows,
comic zone, fanboy radio, comic geek speak, and shows like colected comics library or augie deblieck's pipeline, where one person talked comics, but they didn't do interviews.
i think having a background in radio helped, and i certainly mentioned my day job, when approaching creators.
since then, so many podcasts are doing it now, but again i think i got in early enough and cranked out so many shows that first year, that i developed a good reputation as a decent guy who did decent interviews.

Sir,
Love your interviews. Totally fascinating stuff about the craft of the story, to the point that I'm starting to write myself. I'm running out of word balloons with writers I read. Do you know of other podcasts that talk to writers about writing? Any favorites? The only other one I'm aware of is Fresh Air.
Keep up the good work,

Mr. Siuntres,
Just like to say I've been a big fan for about two years now. WB was the first comics podcast (strike that: first podcast of any sort) that I listened to regularly, and through a few Around Comics name-drops by you on the show I started listening to them, and then 11 O'clock, CBQ and, yes, even the Crank Cast (basically, everyone who participated in the 24hr podcast).
Your knowledge of narrative creators in all mass media is nothing less than stunning and your interest in what comics refer to as the Golden Age era in particular allows me to pick up a few references and fill gaps in my pop culture knowledge.
Wordballoon = infotainment for sure.

Any kind of fun couples type stuff to do. I'm thinking mostly tourist stuff like i wanna go to Milenium park, wrigley field, downtown area etc. But i would also like to check out some of the local arts, is there a specific "artsy" type area i should go? Also, what's a chicago pizza or other food joint that i shouldn't pass up? oh and shopping for the wifey :)

Brubaker talking how the characters connect in the VOL 2 #1-3 in Criminal?

Heres a question i always want to know. How did you get started with wordballon and what was your first attempt at an interview
well, i've been interviewing music and sports stars on the radio , since the mid 1980's at various radio stations. I think smokey robinson was my first big interview (for an oldies station) George Foreman was my first major sports interview.
in 2001 when i was working at sporting news radio, my 1st program director hired me primarily to do commercials and behind the scenes feature work, but he also had me covering boxing on-air, sending me as a reporter/analyst to fights in Vegas and NYC.
in 2004, a new guy was hired as PD, who didn't care about boxing coverage, so he cut back 80% of what i was doing on air.
In late 2004-early 2005 i decided i'd want to do some interview projects, that wouldn't conflict with my sports job, and first decided to make a video documentary on chicago crime fiction.
i planned to include a comics component to the project, and shot live video interviews with Max Allen Collins (Ms Tree, Batman, Road To Perdition),and Brian Azzarello .
Both went great but my video guy flaked out on me, and the docu was never completed.
By may 2005, I took the audio from those interviews and put them on my original WB website as mp3 links, along with new phone interviews featuring Jeff Parker, and Mark Andreyko. I choose the Word Balloon name, for the obvious reason that the show would be a one on one interview format. i would record an interview, and hit the creator's message board with a link to the .mp3 , and people started coming to my site. Colleen Doran was my first massive hit interview, when she got 2000 downloads in a month.
a bendis board member Wipeout heard the show, and said I should also make the mp3's available as podcasts, and by aug of 2005 i did.
meanwhile Mike Wierringo had heard my show, and passed the info to guys like Mark Waid, and Andreyko told Bendis that I was a decent interviewer, so by the wiz chgo '05 convention, i handed out CDs loaded with interviews i had been doing all summer, to guys like brian, brubaker, rucka, waid, Loeb, hoping they would consent to do future interviews.
after that convention, it became easier to book guests. dc and marvel pr guys began to work with me, setting up interviews. My first SDCC was the summer of 2006, and I was so happy that guys like Matt Fraction already knew about my podcast.
i got in at the right time, because in 2005 the only podcasts out there that did regular comic book interviews were fanboy radio, comic geek speak, and me. As far as I know , Hinze's FBR was the first new comic fan show, when he started in 2001 or 2002.
There was (and still is) a live streaming net radio show called comic zone, and i know that even in the 80's and 90's, there had been small local radio shows like nuff said and hour of the wolf that also did comic interviews .
Then Ifanboy, who had already had a newswebsite for years started their show, followed by Around Comics in 2006.
now there are easily 200 comic podcasts out there.

One question, back in August 2006 (more or less), your site was part of the Agents of Atlas ARG game, hosting an audio file concerning a message from one of the characters (the file is an important part of the Agents of Atlas online prose story written by Parker). The rest of the story is still available, but that audio segment is misssing.
From descriptions from other people, it was linked using an image of the Human Robot in your front page. I was wondering if you still have that file, as I am trying to complete the story.

depends.
some cons i've stayed with friends at theit apts or houses. some i've had the con fly me out, and pickup my lodging costs.
all have been worth my time. i wouldn't attend a con that wasn't worth my time.
that btw has nothing to do with the quality of the con.
ie: san diego last year wasn't worth the expense of me going out there.

I don't really have much friends so I suppose it would be more expensive for me...

Hi John.
Every time I listen to your show, you come out as a very knowledgable and up to date guy as far as comics go (as long as the topic isn't X-Men related). Obviously you have to be in order to do what you do, but I've always wondered what are your usual pics at the shop?? Which books do you actually follow?? Or do you just read a little bit of everything (like your humble servant over here)?? Are you into trades, or do you still keep your long boxes at home??
Also, what's the best place to get pizza in Chicago??? I'd like to know your opinion in case I ever get the chance to go.
Thanks!

i only interview people who write or draw books that i genuinely like .
there are many excellent chicago style pizzarias, like unos duos, and giordano's...but lou malnatti's is consistently great.

That's a good philosophy. It also means you read a TON of books.
Luo Malnatti's. Good. I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks man!

John:
Do you watch Batman:Brave and the Bold?
With the exception of the whacky portrayal of Aquaman (and WAAAAAAY too much Green Arrow) this show is great!
Based on what I read about it I thought I'd hate it but these guys love the Silver Age DC Universe- from the Sprang Joker to Batman and ? beating up all the lame villains from the 1966 Batman TV series there hasn't been many mis-steps.
You HAVE to talk to James Tucker!

Hi John,
I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the show. I recently downloading a bunch of episodes to listen to at work and I really enjoy them. They're very fun, insightful, and make the work day go by faster. Keep it up and thanks again!

I've only seen a few episodes... and probably not the good ones since I felt they were very childish...

They do tend to be more light-hearted than stuff like BTAS or JLU, but there are some really good episodes mixed in there and I love that the writers try to focus less in the A listers and give all of the DC universe a chance to shine, even if not all of them get their due (Poor, poor Aquaman...).

Hi John, first time poster, listener of 2 years.
I wanted to ask you a few questions:
1) I enjoy it when you and many of your guests talk of movies from various eras. That said could you recommend me to films from these genres: film-noir, b-movies, and comedy? Preferably between the 40's to the late 70's.
2) You're very entertaining and quite hilarious when it comes to voice impersonations. What kinds of creative approaches do you take to help you cue out to those voices?
3) I always appreciate it when you talk of comics past, notably of Kirby, Colan, etc. Are there any history-centric podcasts that you could recommend for further learning? I just find it fascinating and would like to know more about comics than just whatever gets released "this wednesday".
Thank you in advance.

1) we have a whole thread here that adresses this q

2) Learning and doing voices is like singing. You search for the pitch cadance and rythyms in a persdons voice and see if you can "sing" what you heard. .
3) Bill Jourdain's Glden age Of Comic Books, does a solid job of chronicling the history of comics. he doesn't have a website, but his show is posted at ITUNES
also Two Morrows Tune In podcast, with Chris Marshall

Kirkman and I were due to talk last thursday, but he had to postpone to either the end of this month, or the start of sept.
