Well, everyone is going to be having their ideas of people john s. could try to hook up with, so i figured i'd start the thread. anyone have great ideas of repeat guests that we haven't heard in a while, or new ones you'd love to hear?
guests i'd love to hear are:
john byrne (someone else said that, i agree)
chris claremont
john romita SENIOR AND JUNIOR
EVS (a hilarious guest, time for him to come back)
paul levitz
dan didio
brian k vaughan (believe me john, i know you're trying...knowing BKV from
WAY back i'm sure he'll come around eventually, he's a
good guy!)
kevin smith
peter david
warren ellis
marc sumerak (good guy, i met him at a couple shows)
garth ennis
stan lee (? u never know...)
steve ditko (hey, this is a WISH list, ya know!)
frank miller
mark millar
grant morrison
leinil yu
george perez
JMS
alan moore (heh)
joe quesada
i'm sure there's a million more, but that's a few i think would be enjoyable! any ideas from other folks? (sorry if i stole all the good ones, but back me up if you agree with them!)
looking forward to more great stuff--
bob :)

You should totally do an interview with John Byrne, and then just as it's about to start, surprise him with the fact that he's going to be answering questions from Brian Michael Bendis's message board.

I'd love to see questions from John Byrne's message board.
Q1. Mr. John Byrne, why are you so awesome?
Q2. Mr. John Byrne, can you be MORE awesome?
Q3. Mr. John Byrne, can I EVER be as awesome as you?

Bendis/Maleev or Bendis/Hickman would be facinating
More Fraction is always nice
Peter David would be great
Dan Slott! Has he even been on at all?
Sean Phillips
Jae Lee (both stolen from the above list, but I'd enjoy)
Some mid-90s figures like Scott Lobell
Some editors, like Wacker, Alonso and maybe some DC editors
I'm sure there are more that I'd find facinating.

I second this. If David comes on, I'd love to hear him talk about Tigerheart (my favorite novel of this past year.) And I love Terry Moore.

Alright, dream suggestions, all of which might be a bit hard (but extremely rewarding to pull off):
-Joss Whedon
-Ben Edlund
-Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick (Christopher Mcculloch)
Also, FBR has done both Grant Morrison and Alan Moore and I think we both know WB is classier than they are, so what are you waiting for my man?

I'd also second Chris Claremont, a nice long career spanning discussion could be great, great stuff.
And I'll add, to the 90s folks idea that I floated: Tom DeFalco. I think he'd have a lot of interesting stuff to say, not only about books he wrote but working as EiC of Marvel for a decent amount of time.
Dusty
08-31-2008, 03:18 PM
As I've stated elsewhere, John Byrne and Jim Shooter.
How about Tom Brevoort?
I'd definitely like to hear from Epting. I'll even ask him personally if you don't!
Bob Layton, Mike Zeck, George Perez, Peter David, Todd McFarlane, Chris Claremont, Marc Silvestri, Alan Davis, John Romita Jr., and Roy Thomas would be the other industry legends I'd like to hear from.
Ralph Macchio would make for a very interesting show talking about the changes at Marvel in the time he's been there. Maybe some Mark Gruenwald memories. *sniff*

Bob Gale (for his Spidey and DD and Batman work but you gotta ask him about his BTTF work)
the Spidey Brain trust guys... maybe not all at the same time but maybe the artists: Marcos Martin, Mcniven, Jimenez, Bachalo and Larocca and the writers or some of them: zeb, marc, dan and bob.
Luna Bros.
tony moore, ryan ottley, gabriel ba.
maybe the my chemical romance guy if that's even possible but the Ifanboy boys were able to get him so maybe... gerard way is his name.

It just occurred to me. You need to talk to Duane Swierczynski!
I first heard about his book The Blonde on your interview with Greg Rucka. I picked up that book and read it in hours (I'm a slow reader so it's quite a feat for me). And I devoured his latest book Severance Package and loving Cable.
Haven't checked out his Iron Fist stuff because I need to pick up the Fraction/Brubaker run :(
I met him at a book signing in LA, I can see why Brubaker and Fraction like him.

Grant Morrison would rule, but I understand international calling and all that.
A new Geoff Johns is in order, especially with the end of the Secret Origin arc coming up, along with Blackest Night and Flash Rebirth and his involvement in the Final Crisis tie-ins.
More "Wordballoon: After Dark" would be nice with Bru and Fraction...easily the funniest the 'cast has ever been.
And even though they'd probably never do it, Chicago's own Chris Ware and Jeffrey Brown would be a great treat.

I second Garth Ennis. In fact, I really want to hear a wordballoon podcast with Ennis in it. Heck, I'd even pay for it!
He's my favorite writer in the biz, but he's never on the web and the in depth interviews are few and far between. So John, if you could pull this off it would be the ultimate present to me. Where can I donate?
Other than that, I'd like to hear John interview Johnny Ryan, Ivan Brunetti, Mike Carey and of course Alan Moore. But Ennis first. The thought of a "Ennis Tapes" is almost like a wet dream for me (interview-wise). I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hey John, I definitely support the suggestions for interviewing creative teams. You'd be hard pressed to re-create the very particular musk of manlove that fills the air when you and bru/fraction hook up. Those interviews (was there more than 1?) are downright entertaining, comics or not. Led me to The Wheelman and Duane's new Iron Fist run (both excellent) and Blast of Silence (beautiful package that I have yet to open).
Is it difficult to take on more than one guy at a time or are you a professional about it?

John, have you ever thought about having some voice actors on to talk about the process of bringing comic characters to life? Tara Strong, Phil LaMarr or Kevin Conroy would also be WAY cool to hear from....
I know that Phil LaMarr is a pretty big comic book fan. I would see him every once in awhile at Golden Apple and at Earth 2 when Warner Bros. was in Sherman Oaks .
Actually, Mark Hamill would be great for your show John. He's a real nice guy and I would see him in comic shops in L.A. every once in awhile too.

A podcast featuring Joe Quesada and Dan Didio would be interesting to hear as well. I don't know if they would be up for it, but I would be interested in hearing their takes on the competition.

This is my first post on the forums, so, since I'm here at the Word Balloon board, it'd be rude not to thank John for a really wonderful series of interviews. Listening to your conversations with so many creators has been a joy. Without wishing to sound like a sycophant, Word Balloon is the best such podcast I have been exposed to by a country mile.
Anyway, onto the subject of the thread. I would love to hear conversations with veteran creators. After all, these guys are such a reservoir of anecdotes, stories and knowledge. The few names that spring to mind right now include writers Gerry Conway, Len Wein, Roy Thomas and Denny O'Neil, and artists Ron Frenz, John Romita, Joe Sinnott and Sal Buscema. I would also love to hear from long-serving editors like Mike Carlin and Ralph Macchio. Just imagine the stories all these guys would be able to tell... if they were of a mind to share!

As much as I love stuff like the Bendis Tapes, the Loeb Report, and your 3-way with Bru and Fraction :scared: I was absolutely fascinated by the whole podcast.
Speaking of which, ever thought about doing some voice acting work? Maybe you can guest star in the Brave and the Bold, I bet Andrea would love you :D

i tell all the chgo artists i know that if they ever do animation they'd better use me as a voice.
as for andrea's interview i am a little surprised that it hasn't had more downloads, like a loeb, ethan, bendis, johns or all the a-list writer/ar6tists have, who normally add 2-3 thousand extra unique downloads to my usual audience
she's got a respectable number but not in their league

I'm guessing you're not the type to ask your guests for favours but hopefully some of them realise that you'd do great and make some calls. Loeb has to have some sort of connections, right?

That's a shame because it was an interesting peek into the world of voice acting. It would've made for a good dvd extra or commentary track. Hey, there's an idea!

I'd have to second JMS. I think he would be fascinating to talk to about his creative process, his approach to stories, and how he differs his approach with comics, TV and now even movie with the Changeling coming out next year I think, directed by Ron Howard. Gotta echo my support of Ben Templesmith (though he's overseas right now, I BELIEVE he lives in San Diego), Barry Windsor-Smith, and Jen Grunwald (for the same reason Dusty mentioned -- I'm fascinated by what decisions need to be made when creating a trade/collection).
I'll also throw in a wish for Rob Schrabb, Kazu Kibuishi, and after hearing your awesome Mike Grell episode, I'd love to hear an interview with Mark Ryan (who I always knew as an actor, but had no idea was writing comics!) -- maybe once his & Grell's collabo book "The Pilgrim" hits? (Unless is already has?)
Oh! And an interview with Antony Johnston and/or Christopher Mitten of Wasteland would be awesome!

Not even close dude. I'd say he's like Harlan Ellison if Harlan Ellison was actually a nice guy, but I know Howard would hate that because there's no love lost between him and Harlan.
So I'll say this: I sat in on his panel. It was ten times as edifying as the Bendis/Kirkman debate. Adam Hughes was there but even he was just listening to Howard speak for half of it. Thirty minutes in I put down my laptop because he'd given me more than enough material. I was so exhausted I could barely stand at this point. And I just listened. In that way when you have a really, really good teacher and you can just totally immerse yourself in everything they're saying.
Howard crackles.

i think steven's creator credentials outweigh his cbr column. granted (pun) , he does the column more than his published books, but i'd still put his 30 plus years as a creator versus his 10 or less as a net columnist.

I would be so excited about Kelly and Seagle interviews, either separate or together. I was heartbroken when they got dropped from (or just left) the X-books back in the 90s. I wonder how awesome their big story would have been in today's hands-off-editor-run Marvel.

Scott Lobdell would be interesting as would Claremont for similar reasons linked to my younger years.
Some UK folk like Rob Williams, Si Spurrier (who I interviewed recently when I guest co-hosted Comic Book Outsiders), Andy Diggle and Jock etc.
I loved the Brubaker/Fraction stuff and I like the idea of creative teams together. Also the Bendis and Loeb ones are amazing so maybe more of those kind of Q&A style ( I know Gail Simone is coming)
But I'd most like to hear Joe Q and Dan Didio together (failing that Bendis and Kirkman with o graphs) or to of course Stan the Man (with or without Kevin Smith).

I love Diggle's ability to tie in previous arcs while starting a new one that anyone could easily jump into. His work on Hellblazer is a perfect example. Besides, I haven't seen a writer have Constantine do outlandish stuff (such as snort the bones of St. Nick/Santa) since Ennis was on the book.
I have to admit, I never read all of The Losers but my roommate swears by it.

John - First I have to say your interviewing skills are second to none. From outstanding conversations with the greats like Simonson, Grell, Brubaker and many others to the outstanding follow up questions you ask in the Loeb Report and the Bendis Tapes. It would be easy to let the creators do all the talking but you are a master of steering them and getting the most insightful points out of them. Thank you.
As for requests: How about a call with John Romita Jr. and John Romita Sr.? Or how about the Kuberts?

Hi John, I'm a big fan from Argentina and a journalist too. You know, I'd really like to hear some interviews with these guys (or at least know if you're planning to interview them):
- Mike Carey (I know you're not an X-Men guy, but his work has been outstanding)
- James Robinson
- Duane Swierczynski (I'm not digging his Cable very much, but his Iron Fist has really surprised me)
- Jason Aaron (he's got to come back)

- JMS
Thanks man, keep up the good work!

Judd Winick and Grant Morrison two of the major architects of the DCU you haven't talked to yet and it'd be freaking awesome to hear you interview them both, John.
Paul Dini would be cool with his love of comics and his animation experience, and he has a whole line of comics coming up.
Eric Powell and Mike Allred two of the greatest cartoonists working in comics today.
Bruce Timm, that'd be an awesome interview!
Tony Moore has been part of so many sucsessful creator owned comics in the past couple years and has such a great art style he seems like an obvious choice for wordballoon treatment.

Anyways someone that would be awsome is i have to agree Grant Morrison! i love final crisis and i would love to here about all star superman. Another would be Geoff Johns but i think i would love to here from JMS and his incrfedible run on Thor!

if they were actually good friends, i'd try...but i'll let that happen at a con.
it was easy doing loeb and jesse alexander, or even bru and fraction, who talk all the time to each other.
if word balloon was my full time job, it might be more possible, but both guys are hard enough to get on when they aren't in the office, let alone to coordinate a mutual time.
daytime interviews are tough due to my day job. for the first 2 years of word balloon, i was either working nights, or freelancing. these days my interviews happen weeknights or weekends.

i would like to speak with the romitas and kubrerts but in each case i 'd get more out of individual interviews, instead of having the family gang bangs.
you'll notice, with the exceptions of writer teams like bilson & demeo, or defillipis & weir, the wb duo interviews have been with folks i've already had on a few times alone.

Here is a short list:
John Ostrander - I know you did an interview with Mr. Ostrander but I can't find a link to it anywhere. A new interview on Mr. Ostrander's current work would be most welcome especially with a repost of the original conversation as a primer.
Tim Truman - Grimjack, Scout, Airboy, The Spider, Conan, The Black Lamb, Star Wars, Jonah Hex, Hawkworld, Lone Ranger & Tonto and tons more. Lots of fodder for a good conversation.
Mike Baron - Really enjoyed the classic interview you recently reposted. Mr. Baron was suprisingly candid and had some interesting things to say. I would love to hear a longer more in-depth conversation.
Jim Starlin - I wold like to hear Mr. Starlin talk about his current work at DC and all his past works as well. If you could get an update on the status of The Breed and Cosmic Guard/Kid Kosmos that would be great.
George Perez - He is the man - that is all.
The heads of the DC & Marvel trade paperback programs in two back to back conversations especially if you open up the forum to take questions beforehand.
