Eddie Campbell and Dan Best deliver a funny, interesting, crazy, adventurous story of a 19th century circus performer and make all the parts work, and work well.
It is at once a superhero comic, a romance comic, a comedy, an adventure, a multiverse spanning crossover, a homage to the 19th C and Victorian Era England, a metatext on the nature of comics. It is all of these things and, remarkably, it's own self. A comic impossible to define in any way other than saying, "this is comics."
Eddie Campbell brings his usual imaginative and authoritative painted art to this graphic novel and somehow molds it for every chapter and every character to make them memorable and significant.
This is great comics, no doubt about it. This is what Eddie Campbell does best.
