You have to wonder what the Committees for the Olympics in future years said to themselves after that. There's just no way you can top what they did.

BEIJING (AP) -- A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball (http://topics.nytimes.com/olympics/2008/volleyball/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said.
The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site.
The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.
The stabbing came only hours after what by many accounts was the most spectacular opening ceremony in Olympic history and it has already dampened some of the enthusiasm.
''They are deeply saddened and shocked,'' Darryl Seibel, a spokesman for the U.S. Olympic Committee, said of the volleyball team.
The U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement that two family members of a coach for the men's indoor volleyball team were stabbed at the Drum Tower ''during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant.''
One of the family members was killed and the other was seriously injured, it said, without giving details.
The official Xinhua News Agency identified the attacker as Tang Yongming, 47, from the eastern city of Hangzhou. It said Tang attacked the two Americans and their Chinese tour guide, who was also injured, at 12:20 p.m. on the second level of the ancient tower, then leapt to his death immediately afterward. The second level of the tower is about 130 feet high.
Seibel said the two Americans who were attacked were not wearing anything that would have identified them as Americans or part of the U.S. team. He could not name the coach.
''They were not wearing apparel or anything that would have specifically identified them as being members of our delegation'' or as Americans, he told The Associated Press.
He said it is ''too early to say'' whether the U.S. delegation or athletes will require additional security.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan said it was aware of an incident involving two Americans and was working with Chinese authorities to find out more. He said U.S. officials were in contact with relatives of the two Americans who are in Beijing.
''Out of respect for the families involved, we can't say more than that,'' Don Q. Washington, another embassy spokesman, told reporters.
Police blocked off streets leading to the Drum Tower immediately after the attack and cordoned off the area with yellow police tape. Security officers were examining the scene on the tower and below.
Attacks on foreigners in China are extremely rare. A Canadian model was murdered last month in Shanghai, but police said that was because she stumbled onto a burglary.
In March, a screaming, bomb-strapped hostage-taker who commandeered a bus with 10 Australians aboard in the popular tourist city of Xi'an was shot to death by a police sniper.
Shanghai and Beijing are still safer than most foreign cities of their size. Punishments for crimes against foreigners are heavier than for crimes against Chinese, and police-linked neighborhood watch groups are highly vigilant. Chinese are not allowed to own guns.
Even so, the U.S. government now warns Americans against muggings, beatings and even carjackings, especially in the nightlife and shopping districts of large cities.
Built in the 13th century, the Drum Tower is one of the few ancient structures still in Beijing, and was used to tell time in imperial China for the city, using drummers who pounded their instruments to mark the hours. It is located on an important central axis of the city, to the north of the Forbidden City, the former home of the emperor.
The White House saidPresident Bush, who is in Beijing for the opening days of the games, was informed of the incident, and his heart goes out to the families of the victims. It said the administration and the Beijing U.S. embassy have offered those families any assistance they need. Also, U.S. officials have been speaking to Chinese authorities about the incident.
International Olympic Committee (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/i/international_olympic_committee/index.html?inline=nyt-org) spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said in a statement that the committee had received reports of the attack and was in contact with Beijing Games organizers ''to find out full details, and are ready to provide whatever assistance we can.''

Feature: Beijing conjures Olympic opening epic with high technology

www.chinaview.cn (http://www.chinaview.cn/index.htm) http://imgs.xinhuanet.com/icon/2006english/2007korea/space.gif 2008-08-09 02:18:28

beijing, aug. 8 (xinhua) -- chinese gymnast li ning's lighting of the beijing olympic cauldron, after "space walking" around the inner wall at the top of the 91,000-seat national stadium, was a perfect finishing touch to the dazzling opening epic of the beijing games.
Li was suspended by wire and lifted in the air for the "space walk". Images of worldwide torch relay were projected on the screen before he used his torch to light a wick that led to the cauldron.
Directors of opening ceremony employed high technologies to conjure a magic, dreamlike start of the 29th summer olympics on friday.
Five thousand years of chinese history flowed on a huge scroll that unrolled to chapters of china's 5,000-year civilization. "whales" swam in the tank-like inner walls of the stadium. Human beings roamed on an elevating "globe", and dancers dressed in bright costumes formed a brightly-lit "bird's nest".
"we have combined creativity with the most complicated technologies in olympic history to maximize the visual and sensory impact on the audience," said yu jianping, technical team leader for the opening.
Light-emitting diodes (leds) were installed across the 20,000-square-meter national stadium, better known as the bird's nest, to create an ideal multimedia environment, with storage cells backing up electricity supplies.
An led screen 147 meters long and 22 meters wide was laid at the center of the ground, and about 44,000 colorful led beads were embedded with a distance of 600 millimeters between each two.
Tiny led beads were also embedded on the costumes of performers who fan out to create a falling starry sky and a brightly-lit bird's nest.
Four years ago athens opened the games with a dreamlike aegean sea. Today, beijing opened a scroll to present china's history.
The scroll and a "globe" made of aluminum alloy rose from elevating platforms, and performers walked, headstood and did all stunts on nine tracks of the "globe".
Throughout the performances, high technology went hand in glove with traditional chinese culture: Performance of the movable type printing, one of the four great inventions of ancient china, took an image of both ancient chinese character case and modern computer keyboard; fairies fell from the sky, costumes glowing with light, to represent "apsaras", an image in the mural paintings of mogao grottoes of dunhuang in northwest china's gansu province.
For the first time ever in olympic openings, beijing used a technical monitoring system for program control of more than 18,000 performers through their identification codes.
"the beijing olympics opening features dozens of new technologies developed in many areas," said yu jianping.
Cellular materials designed for the space sector, for example, were used to make paper in the painting scroll, he said. "most of the core technologies used in the opening ceremony were independently developed by domestic companies."
"the engineering design at the opening ceremony borrowed many of the latest space technologies. They ensured the stable operation of thousands of devices," said zhou fengguang, head of the engineering design and research institute of the people's liberation army general armament department.
The control center of the opening ceremony was equipped with the "shenzhou 4000" control system that was used during space missions.

High-tech fireworks
fireworks were a highlight of the beijing olympics opening, with a "waterfall of stars" flowing down the interior walls of the bird's nest, the olympics' 29 colossal burning footsteps toward beijing and the five olympic rings in the sky.
Behind the dazzling show were sophisticated new technologies -- compressive air launches, chamber pressure launches and computerized ignition technologies.
The use of digital ignition control system minimized the time difference of the firework display to a few milliseconds at more than 30 locations across beijing, said deng shaohui, an official in charge of the firework shows during the opening ceremony.
Despite a rare eruption of more than 40,000 shots, beijing has used smokeless powder to reduce pollution to a record low, he said.
Fireworks indicating the 29 footsteps along beijing's axis to the bird's nest is a unique idea of cai guoqiang, director of visual and special effects of opening and closing ceremonies for the olympics and paralympics.
His ideas, plus high technologies, brought to life many olympic icons including the smiling faces and the five rings.
"we spent two years working to ensure every cannonball is shot to the right place," said cai. "had one of them faltered, the final image would not be the same."

Don't know about the NBC coverage but in the UK, the BBC opening title was done by the "the Gorillaz" ( well two of them)

which is particulary great for us brits due to it being based on the same chinese folk tale as the classic 70's japanese import "Monkey" don't know if you ever got it over there, but it definitley was part of my childhood.

They went just bout one team at a time.

After Team USA they showed both Japan and China They'd have to show them considering everyone says the two of them are a lock for gold and silver and USA is just trying to get the bronze (and that's from the NBC commentators).

I REALLY hate this new gymnastics scoring system. Too much focus on difficult and dangerous techniques and routine to get high start values, the artistry suffers and everything looks robotic, especially on floor exercise. You can fucking FALL nowadays and still win gold. Unheard of in the pre-2004 days.

That said, Cheng Fei's vaults are poetry in motion --- 2.5 twisting? yes plz.

Yep. Nastia Liukin fell on her ass on her dismount, and still managed to get the highest score out of her team. And by all accounts, she would have scored higher than this performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdfxM0fktMo).

Two of the American gymnasts were injured on their ankles, Samantha P. and Chellsie Memmel (she was the dark-haired one that fell on the bars), so they weren't able to compete in the other three events. If everyone on your team can go up, you can disregard the lowest score in order to help your qualifying-for-final score.

I will say I'm not buying into Phelps winning 8 golds though. I just don't think it will happen. I do think he'll win a lot, but not all 8. There could be a silver or bronze in there somewhere.

Chellsie would have killed on the floor (if it was anything like her routine on the trials)... *sigh* At least Shawn's consistent in that once she sticks the first, she'll keep through with it.

Now they have to hope China messes up. Cheng Fei's a world champ on floor, but her stuff is packed with high-risk moves.

Yay Cheng Fei. I love her routines. Hope she doesn't fuck up too bad. o.O They might drag her out to the street and shoot her.

Edit: Whew! She lives!

My Olympic crush had such a shitty night. I feel bad. :(

She should get 2 extra tenths just for being able to tumble with that rack knocking off her center of gravity.

In a moment of tastelessness when discussing the gymnastics here at work, I said if you want proof that the Chinese girls are under age, fuck them and see if the cops arrest you.

I'm so going to hell for that one.

When he was accused of using Dominique Moceanu, who was 13 at the time, Bela said it shouldn't matter the age, just the ability, and then said the rule should be done with so as to avoid controversies like this. After all, he coached two 14 year olds to Olympic glory. I agree with him. Age doesn't impact ability (look at Boginskaya and Khorkina, who were 20+). But when the US team loses, it's an issue against him and his wife, it makes him look like he's crying sour grapes.

That said, the Chinese were better than the Americans last night. Period. They didn't make as many mistakes as the Americans, and didn't have injuries harming them (Chellsie Memmel would have KILLED on floor), and had stronger start values on their routines that, even with deductions, kept them in "safe" zones; same with most of the Americans' routines (Shawn Johnson is perfect example), although their falls and boundary-stepping really hurt them.

Personally, I think if you fall, you shouldn't medal.

Yeah, it's fun. There was some on yesterday in the afternoon. It was exciting because a guy from Togo won a Bronze which was like the first ever medal for his country or something.

It's on the other channels though not NBC proper. Check USA, MSNBC, CNBC, etc. or Universal HD.

Ah... That might be why I haven't been coming across it at all.

It seems like I only get the Olympics on one other channel sometimes with how they've got it scheduled.

Under what catagory do they have the races listed under?

On my system they just list everything as Summer Olympics. The channels I listed are all the channels it's on at various times during the day and night. There's also Telemundo and I think Oxygen does something (though it seems they mostly are doing Equestrian stuff and Gymnastics recaps).

You might check online at NBCOlympics.com for scheduling, too.

Yeah. That's pretty much what I had found.

I kept trying to find something under rafting or something similar, but didn't seem to find anything that fit.

I'll poke around and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the info!
