View Full Version : Who Else is noticing the Board freezing your browsers today?

Ashwin Pande

A few of us in the TIP Thread noticed that Firefox is freezing up for us for a few seconds while using the board today. This was confirmed in the BS thread.

Anyone else noticing this? Could the Amazon thing be causing this?

The board (and ONLY this one) has been freezing my browzer for two weeks now. Today it's been a bit different - a big hesitation, but not a total freeze like the last couple of weeks. When someone figures the problem out, lemme know.

(I use Explorer on both my computers, but this is only happening on the office computer.)

I'd guess not, because the freezes happen after the page has loaded the text, by which time I'd assume the Amazon links would already be in.

Haborym

Same lag here. The page freezes up just enough to be really annoying, usually a few times mid scroll.

It's definitely the huge Amazon box at the bottom of every page. I reloaded a few times with no lag until the Amazon box began loading, and none after the load time.

It'd seem that way, but I don't think that's the case. Just a few minutes ago I was in a thread with some really long posts and I watched the text links load.

The screen froze then the Amazon underlined links appeared.

It may be the combination of the large Amazon ad at the bottom of the page loading and the background program searching for words to link at the same time that's causing the lag.

Why do that when you can advertise like crazy? I'd been having problems with my computer lately and finally realized what it is. It's this site and its need to advertise up the ass. But I guess if it costs $1800 a month to run a message board... I guess I'll just stay off it until the problem is gone.

Twelvecents

After a little poking around, it looks like these are or are related to the Amazon "Omakase" links affiliates program ("Omakase" is japanese for "Leave it to us", as in 'let us decide what to serve you' if you were in, say, a restaurant).

If you're using Safari and having problems, it looks like PithHelmet (http://www.culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php) may offer similar functionality to NoScript that might help till a fix is found. I haven't tried it yet, but will when I get home from work.

Can we pay to be here and get rid of the Ads ?

Any way to set up access so that you have paid members and non-paid members. If you login and you are a paid member - no Ads ? Probably cant be done but I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount to support the site.

there are less intrusive ways of doing it. eg banner ads between posts. instead of a script that messes up everyone's computers but doesn't even necessarily raise any extra revenue.

just to be clear: I don't particularly have a problem with the bendis board running ads, even those annoying amazon linky things (which confuse the hell out of me), but crashing my browser is crossing a line that does not need to be crossed. it's a breach of trust really.

It was crashing my browser since it started...but now, it's not - it's just slowing it down now, which is better, believe it or not. Before, pages would freeze and then shut down everything.

Funny, though - it's NOT happening on my dial-up connection at home. The Amazon links show, but I have no problem browsing there - it's just as slow as ever!

gotta tell ya, I installed noscript for Firefox and everything is running smoothly.

Not only that, but I'm starting to find all those other little background things that are running on other websites-- this add on is proving to be a gold mine!

For those not in the know: Install Firefox, go to Tools, click Add-ons, click "get Add ons" which will take you to a site, find No Script, click install, restart Firefox and you're in business.

There will be a little popup at the bottom of your screen when you get to the board, just allow everything except Amazon--

this is still happening every single page I load from the board. It really makes the board experience very frustrating and almost not worth using. I can certainly appreciate the need for advertising and income. I specifically haven't blocked ads on this site for that reason, to this point.

but if the only way to get the board to function properly is for the users to block the ads, wouldn't it be easier to remove the problematic ad until something else can be figured out?

Mine was freezing (and 'not responding') for a while...closing down my browser each time. Some pages worse than others - if it froze once, then everytime I tried that page (even after deleting files, etc), it still froze.

Then it stopped freezing/no response/shutdown, and switched to the lag.

Then, it seemed better on Monday/Tuesday.

Today, both the freeze/no response/shutdown AND the lag. Ugh. Annoying.

Some on firefox have used noscript to fix the problem. Is there anything similar for IE?

I'm kinda like the guy who thinks the elevator might come faster if he just keeps pushing the button over and over again. Despite the fact that I know I'm gonna be frozen during the lag, I still can't resist trying to scroll down while a new page is loading. :)

You and me both. :p

My biggest problem is that on my dsl computer, the pages actually freeze, and I get those 'no response' messages and it shuts down my entire browser. However, on my snail-like dial-up at home, I don't have such problems.

THIS makes me wonder if there is a setting on my computer that I need to change, or if it's my security. At home with dial-up (where I am having some lag problems, but no freezing) I have Norton. At work with the dsl (where I have both lag and page freezes) I have McAfee. Could it be something with the security that is causing the more-annoying freezing problem?

It's the Amazon widget at the bottom of the page. It's happening across platforms, across browsers... the fact that it's not happening to you makes you the lucky one. :p "Y: The Last Manwithoutlag."

Seriously, though, it is frustrating. I'm not going to boycot the board or anything, but the sad fact is that it's driving me further away from it. I give. I love this board, but I'm tired of it freezing my shit up. I'm out 'til this problem gets fixed (and, unfortunately, I think I'll be out for quite awhile). :(

That's wacky, because I still have no problems under either browsers. No blockers in place. Is it just the board causing this? I have to wonder.
it does the same thing to me on two different computers, on two different browsers. it's really getting silly that there hasn't been some sort of response or acknowledgment from anybody on this.

They must be making a ton of money from those amazon links to just completely ignore the board being so frustrating that many long time community members would rather just leave than put up with it.

This kind of blatant disregard is really disappointing.

I do wish TPTB would give us some sort of explanation, though. Are they working to fix this? Is this the new status quo? What's the deal?

An update would be nice. S'all I'm sayin'.

Yes, because that's worked out so well in the past. The last time the board was slow, NEWS!, Bendis , McK and maybe even dEnny made posts that the problem was being addressed and that didn't stop people from making threads about how slow the board was or stop threatening to leave.

Speaking of that, the "server is busy" messages seem to have returned.

I'm so glad you said that, I got them and then came on to see nobody had mentioned them. Was worried it was just me :)

NYS Thruway toll booth operators will always be miserable, politicans will always be crooked, my wife will always ask me to do something immediately after I get comfortable on the couch...and WillieLee will always be ready to play Devil's Advocate to the point of stupidity.

I know NEWS! got rid of the Amazon ads, but I'm still getting the lag and the freeze-up.

I know NEWS! got rid of the Amazon ads, but I'm still getting the lag and the freeze-up.
It's the Amazon widget at the bottom of the page. The lag was created in part by the ads, but the widget is still the problem causing the lag. Eventually (hopefully when it either draws enough revenue for the site OR it doesn't draw enough) I'm hoping it dumps it. Since the Amazon stuff went up my enjoyment of the board has gone down immensely.

fuck man, it's gotten worse for me. At first it was pretty bad and affected this Tab only for like 10 seconds, it was almost like having Dial-up again. Ugh. Then it got a little better last week. NOW this shit affects ALL of my open Windows, freezing them for up to 30 seconds every time I click on anything here. That's not all either as this McAfee keeps telling me this site is sending me Trojans. Terrible, just terrible.

In my experience this week, the problem is almost non-existent on my PCs now, maybe a 2 second delay at most, but it's worse than ever on my Mac. It will load a page as normal for a few seconds, then lock up my whole browser for a long time and then, if I was trying to sneak in typing a little before the lock up, it will slowly, agonizingly put up what I typed one letter at a time... but as soon as the words get finished coming up, it unlocks and behaves normally.

I think we just need to face it guys, the Amazon widget isn't going anywhere. All it's really done is make me spend more time on other boards and less time here. It certainly hasn't made me spend more money at Amazon.

I'm still having total page freezes that shut down all my jinx windows (no other sites affected). It's a pain in the butt. And yes - like S-pimp, it means I spend less time here (well, there goes the 10,000 post goal).

Funny thing is - I do NOT have this problem at home on my dial-up. The lag might be there, but no different from regular dial-up lag, and my pages do not freeze and shut down on me like they do on my high-speed at work.

So...maybe the Slowskys are right...

Which is ridiculous.

Even though it's free, and I'm allowed to post pretty much whatever I want, I or anyone ELSE here shouldn't have to download a whole new browser just to be able to view the board lag-free.

This is a wonderful gift Bendis has given us, and I appreciate it greatly. It's my internet home away from home and you guys are my eFamily(and Humphrey is like the molesting uncle I never had), but it's just really frustrating when my favorite place on the net doesn't work up to it's usual standard or doesn't work the way we all would like it to.

no lie. since the "support us by shopping at amazon" link went up at the top of the pages here, i've done that. instead of going to amazon directly for the last 200 dollars i spent there, i linked through jinxworld purposefully. i won't do that again until the board lag is fixed.

if this is the new status quo for the board, thank you. the lag really took away the fun and added at least 5-10 unusable minutes per session i was on the board.

Bonus#1 - The lag (and the widget at the bottom of the page) are gone!!!

Bonus#2 - On my computer at home I now get to experience the joys of Firefox. I'm finally a happy convert!
