Figured someone should start it. So, who do we think is gonna win?

I'm actually worried the NL might take it this year. They have all the best starters now, and they've shown more power in the hitting categories than the AL.

What I am most happy about, is knowing good ol' Torii Hunter gets to watch the game from home. His big fancy free agent contract and he's having a career worst year while he gets to watch two players he threw under the bus (Morneau and Mauer) enjoy yet another All Star appearance.

Fuck you Torii. Fuck you always. :)

The fact that they can get on the road in only 40 minutes is fucking amazing.Yeah, plus they have to spend a significant amount of time paying tribute to that giant toilet bowl in the Bronx. I understand there's a lot to do, so they should start the broadcast a little earlier. Shit, I used to watch the entire All-Star Game as a kid and still get to bed at a semi-reasonable hour. Tonight, we won't see the end of the second inning until about 9:30. That's ridiculous.

Couple observations thus far:

Willie Mays looked super pissed for some reason. Was it just me?

Seeing Bob Feller still around was a real treat.

Anyone else desperately hoping for a Whitey Ford/Yogi Berra first pitch? I know I was. That would have been the greatest for this final game at Yankee Stadium.

I'm a Yankee fan, but that whole Stienbrenner thing just dragged the opening out even longer, and George sure didn't look so hot. Fox was trying to force a Fenway "Ted Williams" like moment, and that wasn't it. But the Hall of Famer's were great! Especially the applause for Willie Mays (who did look pissed) and Hank "the Hammer" Arron! The cheers for Yogi were the best though.

EDIT: Bill, I totally agree. A simple Whitey to Yogi first pitch woulda been the way to go.

And yes, Joe Buck is insufferable...ugh. Plus he and McCarver totally missed the bleacher creatures doing an All-star "roll call" in the top of the first! That was bad-ass and Fox totally missed it.

I loved the Mo-Kazmir-Hallady thing for a couple reasons. First, Kazmir looked like a little kid which was hilarious. But Halladay looked genuinely disinterested. I don't think Halladay needs any lessons on how to pitch.

Koufax is a weird duck though. He may not want to come, that might be a big reason. I know he avoids lots of baseball things, but I also heard that he coaches (might be kids or amateur ball). I know he loves the game, but he always kept himself very distant from the lime light.

You know, I was gonna say I agree and was just as outraged!! So much so, I looked it up. I couldn't believe Stan didn't make it, plus I thought I remembered him being there. Well looks like you're part right. According to wiki, Stan was added by a panel after the initial selections, and I think he was at the ceremony at Fenway. Koufax was on the original team (2nd most votes for a pitcher) and he was at the ceremony, which was a big deal because he never does this stuff. But he still should've come tonight.

Sandy Koufax might be one of the most interesting and smartest people you'll ever read about. I'm not kidding. Plus this is without question one of the finest biographies you'll ever read. This book is fascinating. I sincerely mean it, a complete non-baseball fan would love it, let alone if you're a fan of the game. It disects what happened to make him go from average at the start, to a fucking pitching machine the second half of his career. He was the best there ever was at his peak, and consciencely walked away at the top rather than stick around and possibly hurt himself for life. And yeah behind the scenes he still is involved with baseball. He goes to the Mets spring training camp every year because he knows Fred Wilpon from childhood. Probably went to the Dodgers this spring since he's good friends with Joe Torre. But he simply has zero interest in being known or being famous in any way, shape, or form.

Does Griffey still deserve it?

Griffey's a tough case. You can make the argument either way I think. Of the three best from that decade, Griffey had the best power numbers, Gwynn had the best pure hitting numbers and Bonds had the best all around numbers. Personally I'd include Clemente ahead of Griffey on the All Century list.

PeterSparker

Does Griffey still deserve it?

I say yeah. I don't think he's considered a steroid user (though I wouldn't rule it out for anyone, just never heard a case for him), he didn't stay on pace to do what it was thought he would when he made that team in 99, but he's fulfilled some of it. 600 HR's is 600HR's. He deserved it.

But considering Roberto Clemente didn't make the team, or a first baseman like Jimmie Foxx didn't, with some distance it's more than fair to say they shouldn't have lost a spot to McGwire.

But can you consider his post-2000 stats for an all-century team? And I don't consider 'was so-and-so a user' when deciding who should or shouldn't be on the all-century team. It's mostly useless speculation anyway.

Assuming we never knew about McGuire's steroid use, I still  at his placement on the list. Foxx is certainly ahead of him. McCovey, Greenburg, Killebrew (who is basically McGuire 30 years earlier) and Murrey are ahead of him too.

I hear you, but fair or not part of selecting and validating Jr's selection was the assumption that he would continue to hit and play at that level. So you could select someone with a smaller sample than the guys passed over, that was part of the argument anyway. And I just meant the steroid thing in retrospect, I mean I thought it was a stretch that McGwire made the team to begin with too, his numbers for the "century" didn't justify it anymore than Maris' did. But Griffey kept playing (when he was healthy) while McGwire shrank back down into this tiny guy who wouldn't give a straight answer when he should have. And that makes his selection even more suspect looking back. But at the time he was the toast of baseball, and a very likeable guy. Ted Williams was engaging him specifically at that event in Fenway I remember.

But Clemente not making that team, thats just fucking wrong.

Well regardless of the one or two fans you've probably seen, I can tell you to pretty much a certainty, you would never see at the Metrodome what happened these past two days. Chanting against Paplebon in the ASG for no reason in the late innings in a crucial situation? Booing a rookie kid in his first big league year at the Derby? That's bullshit. i feel like Tejada should have gotten the MVP, hands down.

He was great on both sides of the ball.

I feel that they should just go ahead an award the NL with HFA.

I think the government should give the NL some federal assistance. "We" obviously need it.

Still, it is probably not enough to get Atlee Hammaker off of the hook.Dan Uggla is officially the Atlee Hammaker of offensive players. It will be somewhat interesting to see whether he is able to have a career going forward.

JD Drew gets the MVP and... booed.

Heh, only thing that would've made that situation better is if he was able to drive the winning run in. I was so deflated when he ended up getting walked.

I was hoping that too. Would have been funny to see if the fans booed or cheered or just stood there wondering what to do.

when in doubt, yankee fans will boo.

(or possibly spit, throw back a jager bomb, and/or grab their balls)

But it would have been the win for the AL... It just would have been great to watch.

So due to the length of the game and DVR shenanigans I missed the 12-14th innings.

You therefore missed a lot of both teams not scoring.

And apparently a lot of Uggla fucking up from the looks of it.

I'm just happy Marmol didn't blow the inning. That's the last thing the guy needed. Hopefully his solid inning helps get his confidence back a bit.

Hell of a game. Still...home field advantage...:(

great game!!

I really don't understand some of the Yankee fans booing their own team even if it is Boston for one day (hell they booed Billy Wagner - a New Yorker).

But, the threats to Pappelbon's family was unnecessary and downright stupid.

It's just a different sports environment than I'm used to.

I bailed after the 13th inning.

It was 1AM and I had to get up for work in the morning. Nice to see the AL pull out the win.

Welcome to New York.

(This also works when saying "Welcome to Philadelphia")

Kudos for staying until the very end, Steve.

People need to stop with this notion of how horrible Yankee Stadium fans are, they boo anyone that is a rival. Heck they still boo Morneau for beating out Jeter for the MVP a few years ago.

I have been to Fenway with people wearing Yankee gear and Yankee Stadium with people wearing Red Sox gear and it wasn't even close, the Fenway treatment was much worse. At least in Yankee Stadium we had people coming up to us saying they at least respected someone for having the stones to wear Red Sox gear in the stadium.

As for Papelbon, he said something that even if it wasn't intended as a slight, came off like one and in big market areas, that gets a lot of press. That goes with the territory and the big bucks of playing for the Yanks/Sox (though Paps isnt in the big buck years yet but he's gonna command a lot when he does).
