View Full Version : Bendisboard, I need your help with a sound effect

So here's some copy from a page I'm currently working on:

ARISTON: CHARGE!

ACTION SFX: (the thundering of horses hooves)

And I'm stumped what to use for the sound effect. CLIP CLOP might work well for Monty Python with their coconuts, but that would be too silly. Not sure if RMMMBBBLE would work.

What say ye? :)

(Hoping for a few serious replies, too.)

Tending toward that right now, but I'm wondering if there's something better. :)

On the same page, a few heads get chopped off. I was thinking of using a POIT! for one and put that in the extras section as an outtake. :D

Use this:

I think it would be awesome if heads made that sound when lopped off.

Yup. Though maybe humanity would have wiped itself out by now then because it's so much fun. hehe.

Ben Rosen

yeah, go rumble.

but i dont really think a sound effect is necessary there.

All right, RMMMBBBLE it is!

This is for the new Moreno book THE MINIONS OF KA, btw. CB is managing the project. PR went out yesterday, though I haven't seen any of the news sites pick it up yet. Tons of preview art, more than I would have done but it's the writers' thing. So keep your eyes peeled!

Me neither. The art's good enough. But I'm gonna put one in and then suggest to the writers to just leave it off.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Sound effects should only be used if a sound is alien in some way. Like, I get pretty sick of reading gun "blams" and the like. Seems distracting and unnecessary.

But, if it's an alien sound, how is the artist supposed to know how to spell it? I just blew my mind!

totally agreed.

and i don't know how mauer would feel about this, but i think maybe sound effects should be the job of the artist.

The writer should come up with the onimonipia.

I kindof agree. I don't think EVERYTHING that makes a sound needs to have a sound effect.

But how are you, the reader, supposed to know that a gun was just fired? Or something just exploded? KABOOM!!

Are you looking for .wavs or .aiffs?

I found this if it'll help

http://www.wavsource.com/snds_2008-07-06_390443260409580/sfx/charge.wav

Add some thunder after and it'll sound pretty good.

edit: It just occurred to me you probably AREN'T looking for an actual sound effect. Sorry, my bad.

How about "DRRRRMMMMMMM!!!!!"

Jef UK

Yes, how would we know it's a building exploding and not just a building with eternal flames coming out of it? :)

That would make for a hilarious comic.

Sometimes I don't see how creators pick one sound over another, though.

Exactly! How are we supposed to know that the building is NOT supposed to be aflame?

I think if you're doing it right, the SFX should contribute to the flow of the writing. So, for me, it dosen't matter if it's an alien sound or not. I'll use a 'blam' or a 'shove' or 'sit' or whatever fits.

And I agree with Rosen, it's better when the artist does it so it's part of the art. But I think that's a little more for cartoonists (writer/artists) who are doing everything. I can see pencilers not wanting to put in sound effects that the writer might want to change later (or in this case, the writer didn't specify what exactly he wanted).

I love sound effects that just name the action of what is happening, like, "sit." Cracks me up.

I love it when artists draw SFX on the board. Looks so damn nice and it's less work for me. My SFX are done with the pen tool in Illustrator and not modified fonts, so it can be time consuming. But I'd rather do it this way to at least attempt to get the look of hand lettered SFX on the page.

Personally, I hate SFX. Always have, always will. That's why I don't mind not working for Marvel or DC right now or why I haven't seriously applied to either of them (aside from Yost sending some portfolio stuff of mine to his editor a few years ago). I might reconsider submitting to them if the wallet dictates it.

Jef UK
07-07-2008, 12:16 PM
I also like what I think of as a modern fad of making the SFX big and clear, kind of layered on top of the panel, as represented in several of the Hulk titles of late, most notably for me.

They don't always use SFX. Pretty sure Millar doesn't, for example.

Most do. These guys are first time writers, though, so they didn't know (and I didn't look at the script until two weeks ago). But they're good! They don't overwrite the dialogue at all. Clear and concise copy, great pacing and scene setting.

You could go with the classic "DRNN DRNN" (add an 'N' for emphasis if needed) and "THOKKATTA THOKKATTA" (for further dramatic effect or to signal stonier ground).

This is a Bendis board exclusive because exactly the second I finished the effect and placed it, I got an email confirming that I CAN leave it off. Makes me happy, even though it turned out really nicely. So I'll just keep it on file for future. use. :)
