View Full Version : Top Five _______ (I like lists, gosh darnit)

So I was watching the most recent of the longer weekly iFanboy video podcasts and they were asked the question 'what are your five favorite books coming out right now?' and I thought, wow, interesting, because while a bit generic of a question I don't remember the last time we had a thread of that sort on here (it probably wasn't that long ago, but oh well)

Anyway, mine goes like this, in no certain order:

Monthly Ongoing Comics

Captain America
Criminal
New Avengers
Ultimate Spider-Man
Thor

That got me thinking to books that USED to be in that catagory but have fallen off or ended:

Astonishing X-Men (judging from this week's issue, anyway)
Immortal Iron Fist
X-Factor
Y: The Last Man
She-Hulk (David just isn't up to snuff with Slott in my book, as far as this character's concerned)

And then there are books that aren't monthly or aren't ongoing or are on hiatus:

Non-monthly, non-ongoing or on hiatus
All Star Superman
Atomic Robo
Casanova
Secret Invasion
Young Avengers

Then there are the books that are consistently good but just not on that level:

Consistently good
Detective Comics
Nova
Amazing Spider-Man
Mighty Avengers
Daredevil

And new books, that just haven't been around long enough to be 'the best' but might heading there:

Best New Comics
Captain Britan and the MI-13
Young Liars
Invincible Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
Astounding Wolf-Man (the last few have been pretty great and made me glad to have stuck around)

And then there are those books that go through arcs and/or issues that are AWESOME and arcs that are mediocre:

Inconsistent Comics
Batman (RIP is SO fucking good, not to mention batshit crazy, but the run has been all over the place, quality wise. Never BAD but often not great)
Thunderbolts (the first Ellis arc started 'eh' turned amazing, then the next one did the same thing but ended poorly... it's all over the place)
Amazing Spider-Man (but then that makes sense, considering it's all different creative teams)
X-Factor
Avengers: The Initative

Upcoming things, I'm looking forward to:
Captain America: White
Bru and Fraction Uncanny X-Men
Secret Warriors
Daredevil: End of Days
Spider-Woman: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

And finally, as far as comics go:
Comics that should be better, dammit!
THE FLASH (!!!!!!!!!)
Supergirl
Justice League of America
Titans
Cable

And now for other stuff, while I'm already going on far too long:

MUSIC!

Top 5 Albums from 2008
Lie in the Light by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Stay Positive by The Hold Steady
Hold On, Youngster by Los Campesinios
On Mount Zoomer by Wolf Parade
Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit

So! Feel free to chime in on any of those, or add any of your own! Or ignore this entirely because it's too long and involved!

Thunderbolts (the first Ellis arc started 'eh' turned amazing, then the next one did the same thing but ended poorly... it's all over the place)

The Green Goblin walking around naked and telling Swordman he's the product of a pig caughing is not good enough for you?

The Green Goblin walking around naked and telling Swordman he's the product of a pig caughing is not good enough for you?

Apparently not! I LOVED the second to last issue, and the last one was fine, it just wasn't up to snuff, I didn't think.

I also didn't like the first issue or two.

I'm not saying any of it was bad, my enjoyment of it is wildly different issue to issue though.

I'd say X-Factor's pretty consistent. Not as good as it was pre-MC, but still consistent. I'd also say Cable's been really good so far.

I'd say X-Factor's pretty consistent. Not as good as it was pre-MC, but still consistent. I'd also say Cable's been really good so far.

I think part of it is the art, there has to have been like 10 different artists. And the last arc and the arc before Messiah Complex were a bit of a letdown. If I didn't like it so much to begin with, I might have dropped it, but I have hope that it'll come back strong coming up with it's few new characters and eventually, I'm hoping, the return of Layla, who was a VERY strong part of the cast.

Cable should be awesome. I like the set up in Messiah Complex a lot. But so far it feels glacially paced. I'm going to get the Bishop POV story in the Annual (or whatever it is) and the first issue of the next arc and if they aren't peaking my interest I'm dropping it, which is a shame because I wanted to like it.

I'd say X-Factor's pretty consistent. Not as good as it was pre-MC, but still consistent. I'd also say Cable's been really good so far.

It was great when allowed to operate in its own little world. But lately the character development is being replaced by plot.

Top 5 comics I want to get into but have to buy trades of and catch up:

Walking Dead
Invincible
(may I digress? I want to like Invincible, and probably WOULD have bought the trades and caught up if it wasn't for the Marvel Team-Up issue I bought totally spoiling like... several trades worth of storyline for me. I stopped like midpage on the page where it's just a storyline recap and stopped but it still felt like I'd not be getting the same shock reading the early trades that I would have otherwise)
Fables
Scalped
Green Lantern (I'm on board for Secret Origins because it doesn't spoil anything, but I want the other stuff before the big event next year, especially since everything I've read is pretty great)

How have you heard the Hold Steady's new album? I don't think it's out yet, unless it was leaked somewhere and being a med student, i'm just not up to date with things.

It did leak but it's also available on iTunes (though nowhere else, legally) and that's where I obtained it.

The physical copy is going to have like 4-5 bonus songs, once it's released a few weeks from now, though, so perhaps you'd want to wait for that. I'll probably just buy that too...
