View Full Version : Anyone know how strict Target's return policy is?

I just bought an X-Box 360 two days ago. It's open, used, but obviously not very.
Is there any possibility that I can return this to Target, and if so, what kind of time window do I have?
Since the price reduction is happening sometime in the next two weeks, I'd like to return my arcade version and pick up the premium version. Did I gamble and lose?

Exchange...yes...
Return...not so sure about that. You most certainly can't return the game...but the console...
Target Stores Return Policy
We will issue a full refund for most items returned within 90 days in new condition, with the original receipt, packaging and accessories. A form of personal identification may be required.
Also, please note:
Music, movies, video games, software and collectibles must be returned unopened.
Camcorders, digital cameras, portable DVD, computers, portable electronics, framed art, gas-powered scooters and hot tubs purchased from Target.com are subject to a 15% restocking fee.
Most consumer electronics purchased from Target.com cannot be replaced or exchanged.
Holiday and Seasonal merchandise on clearance at the time of the return will be refunded at the current clearance price.
Any purchase made by check may be refunded as a merchandise voucher.
Refund value for each item returned will be reduced to reflect value of free gift or discount.
Other restrictions may apply.
All other returns or exchanges - including those without a receipt - will be offered manufacturers' warranty and repair assistance at 1-800-303-0308.
Looks like yes...but you are going to lose 15% of the price for a restocking fee.

How the fuck can a company get away with selling you defective electronics and not exchanging them?

Yeah, as I added to the OP, I'm interested in exchanging it for the Premium version, or at least store credit to use when the price drops in the near future.
Oh, and the *game* that came with it is unopened.

How the fuck can a company get away with selling you defective electronics and not exchanging them?I've returned some defective electronics without any problems in the past. Target's always seemed very accommodating to me about such things.

There's lots of stuff you can't return to a store, but you can get replaced by the company that made the product. It's not the stores fault it's defective.

Look on the bright side, though: you have an Xbox 360!

The OP never said his system was defective. It just looks like he wants to return it for the hell of it.

Where I work, I have to turn in receipts on a weekly basis. About six weeks ago, I bought a new phone for the house -- on clearance --, and turned in my receipts, threw away all the stuff for it. The phone died over that weekend.
I took it into Target with only the unit, no boxes, no receipt. Because I used a credit card, they were able to look up my information and return it. I would've got another one, but they were all gone.
Now...I'm sure this might have been because it was defective, but I got 100% back for the phone. And that was straight-up refund, not credit.

Well it is a little bs...plus (no offense) kind of dopey to buy an Arcade version in the first place.

Well, it's what I thought I could afford. $349 seemed like too much to pay. $299 seems fine to me.

I called, and they said I can't return it at ALL if it's been opened. Seems like complete and utter bullshit to me.
See how much it's selling for on eBay.

Heh, well if the only reason I'm returning it is so I can upgrade when the price goes down in a little more than a week, then I imagine someone would have to be pretty stupid to buy it on eBay in the next week.

Come on, what did you expect?
You purchased a console and then found out that it's going down in price in a couple of weeks time. Of course they're not going to take it back when there's nothing wrong with it.
I really feel for you because I was so very, very close to being in this situation the last time they dropped the price (In March here in the UK). I was literally minutes away from walking out of my front door to go and buy a 360 and my friend phoned me up and we started chatting and I ended up not going out to get the 360 in the end. It was 4 hours later when I found out about the imminent price drop so waited and picked it up on the day of the price drop.
If I hadn't had that call I'd have been in the same boat!

1. Its not defective.
2. Exchange it for even credit. Get a gift card, or whatever they give you, then wait for the price drop and go back to Target.

Christ no! I spend about 95% of my gaming time online.

I may not have expected to succeed, but does that mean I shouldn't have looked into it?

Okay, yes, I get it, I bought an inferior version of the system. I apologize for not having unlimited funds at my disposal like you.
Did I at least redeem myself by buying Rock Band for 360 instead of the "gimped" Wii version?

It took me several reads to get this joke.

That's what the people at Target were thinking before you stepped in.

2. Exchange it for even credit. Get a gift card, or whatever they give you, then wait for the price drop and go back to Target. It sounds like they won't take it back for store credit even.
He should go in and lie and say it doesn't work.

i'm not sure about electronics, but i got a bathing suit there a couple of years ago, and as soon as i got in the pool, the colors bled BADLY, it looked terrible, and they gave me a four dollar credit on a gift card for it, saying it was what the clearance price on the suit was. i had bought the suit like, two weeks prior, and even walked to the junior's dept. and got the same suit to physically show them the suit hadn't been reduced that much but they still only gave me the four dollars.
they are assholes about returned stuff, make sure you have the receipt.

Trust me, the customer service people were NOT thinking that. The woman on the phone thought it was called an "X-Box 3" and thought it had just come out.

And yeah...you get point for RB. ;)

But there's nothing internal that makes the Arcade version different than the other versions, right? I just need to find a hard drive and steal my brother's head set.

Bought on of those Legend of Zelda special edition Nintendo DS units the day after Thanksgiving. The kid dropped it the second day we had it. It fell all of about two feet, and did not work at all. I am sure the thing is supposed to be more durable than that. At any rate, we returned it. We didn't really tell them it had been dropped. There were no more in stock, but they gave us a gift card. We had to go to a different Target store to get another one.

I thought the difference was harddrive and wireless controller.
And the harddrives are outrageously expensive to buy on their own for the 360. The harddrive is really the big deal (and honestly wireless controllers have spoiled me quite a bit too).

target sucks for returns. i have heard many stories about people the registered there for their wedding and received duplicates of items on the registry and still couldnt exchange or return the extra item - they only will give credit up to $20 without a receipt 1 time per year.
call and ask them if you can get store credit because it is broken. just lie to them and see if they will take it back. i would.
