I cracked this book a few days ago and am loving the story. But the one thing that REALLY bugs me is that I can't find a single lettering credit in the book!

(Oh no, here I go again. ;))

At first I thought maybe Harris had lettered himself, but when I checked Comic Book Database (http://comicbookdb.com/title.php?ID=4), I learned that John E. Workman Jr., Ken Bruzenak, Bob Pinaha, Gaspar Saladino, and Bill Oakley had worked on the issues in volume 1. And we're talking beautiful hand lettering here, too.

So I'm wondering why the hell the lettering credit wasn't important enough to put into the book when each issue starts with the cover and then an actual credits page for the issue? :?

(Yeah, I know. This is one of my pet peeves and causes. Hah.)

Every trade should have the issue credits for every single issue where they originally appeared.

That's one of my pet peeves, along with not putting the covers in front of the issues.

Stripping the credits from the interiors in a trade collection CAN help because it doesn't interrupt the flow of the story as much. What they did was put the cover before each issue and on the page between the cover and actual interiors, they have the Starman logo in the background and issue credits at the bottom.

After checking the front of the book just now, I do stand corrected about there being no credits for lettering at all. The letterers are mentioned in the front, but not by issue. So at least their names are in there.

I don't know that credit boxes interrupt the flow of anything.

Individual issue credits are a lot more helpful then just putting the credits at the beginning.

Guess this might just be preference.

This I agree with.

Sometimes creators don't want that, they feel it interrupts the flow of the story. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't, it depends on the book.

Creator preference is the least of my concerns when it comes to how I like my trades to be presented.

With collected editions I'm always interested when and where the series was published originally.

Yeah, why should you see the story the way the people who made it think you should, that's crazy talk... :mistrust:

You're a letterer, and you don't recognize John Workman lettering? http://www.newporkcity.net/npcforum/images/smilies/emot-colbert.gif

It don't say who made the chicken wings on the box, just says the factory name. Sometimes.

Ahaha. No, I'm kidding, I know the difference.

Then shouldn't you be reading the original issues, with the ads and paper stock that came with it?

In a perfect world, yes, and I rarely buy trades and almost never of any new material.

I work for DC Editorial. All I can tell you is that the names of the letterers were omitted as part of a forthcoming cross-title event involving Rainbow Lanterns, cyborg versions of Ambush Bug and new origin of Pieface that will shock and amaze you (here's a hint: the Black Racer had a child...). Pre-order today!

They're more like the tambourine players.

Also, the Aztek trade was horribly assembled. Seriously. It looked like a TPB from 1999 or so.

I didn't like the color shifts on the lettering in issue 1 but that's a problem with the separations. Makes it hard to read. However, I do like the lettering overall. There's so much to learn just by looking at these pages.

The SFX especially are interesting. They must have used markers to write them out and then outlined with inks from the way it looks. That's something I'll have to try, too.

What's curious is that Starman on the cover looks a lot like Mayor Hundred in Ex Machina and that the themes are somewhat similar as well.

Really? I guess you don't read a lot of superhero comics, then? I mean, he lettered almost every marvel comic during the '80's.

I started reading (mainstream) comics in 2004. During the 80s, the only monthly I had access to was an East German comic, and in the early 90s I read Disney collections and Star Wars for a while. So yeah, I haven't had much exposure to the 80s letterers. The 60s and 70s guys I've read in Essentials and Omnibus, but there are a lot of guys and gals I still need to discover. It's a lot of fun, actually. :)
