I've read it, but I felt the concept really was better than the execution.

I agree. There were two major tone-shifts in the book, and I liked it a little less after each.

i've heard some good things from a few people, but the story seems a bit bizarre so I wasn't sure if I should give it a shot.

It also drags on and on and on.

I was really stoked to read it, and I was really disappointed afterward.
