"Wanted" devilishly ups the ante to a new level in adapting violent graphic comics to the bigscreen. By confidently grafting nastily creative, high-tech new ways to kill people onto traditional dramatic themes involving professional assassins and family revenge, Kazakhstan-born Timur Bekmambetov assures himself the distinction of becoming the first modern director to emerge from Russia to carve a high profile in Hollywood. Relentless, in-your-face action and a classy cast led by a beefed-up James McAvoy and a heavily tatted Angelina Jolie combine to promise powerful B.O. prospects worldwide for Universal.
As the man responsible for the two highest-grossing films in Russian history, "Night Watch" and its sequel "Day Watch," Bekmambetov, a helmer with muscular visual skills akin to those of top commercials directors, was a good bet to supply the desired edge and a distinctive flavor to this type of genre fare. Often fruitfully and sometimes gratuitously, he gooses every shot with some extra jolt or manipulation, be it an abrupt change in camera speed, skip-framing, odd pulsation or just good, old-fashioned rack focus. He can even use the leading character's accelerated metabolism as a plausible excuse to create a visual correlative in the film's often breathless rhythms.

Like it or not, "Wanted" pretty much slams you to the back of your chair from the outset and scarcely lets up for the duration.

Opening action sequence provides a pretty good indication of what's in store in this adaptation of the popular cult comics created by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones: After deftly avoiding assassination in his office in a Chicago skyscraper, the formidable-looking Mr. X (David Patrick O'Hara) leaps through glass and across the void to the roof of the building across the way, only to finally lose a gun battle fought with bullets that follow curved trajectories when fired by shooters who know what they're doing.

Next day, put-upon account manager Wesley Gibson (McAvoy) is abruptly informed by a mysterious woman (Jolie) standing in a supermarket line that his father, one of the all-time great assassins, died yesterday. Suddenly, this woman, whose name aptly happens to be Fox, is in a firefight with Cross (Thomas Kretschmann), the man who killed dear old dad -- a duel that continues in insanely speeding vehicles on the Chitown streets. That's two hyperventilated action sequences in the first 25 minutes.

Fox takes Wesley to the fortress-like headquarters of the Fraternity, where a nattily attired Morgan Freeman, as the org's boss, Sloan, explains how the 1,000-year-old institution takes it upon itself to eliminate people who are fated to die for reasons dictated by hidden patterns in textiles woven at the factory. Learning that this is as good a reason as any to bump off people he doesn't know, Wesley undergoes training -- repeatedly getting the living crap beaten out of him by menacing guys with names like the Repairman, the Butcher and the Exterminator -- in brutally sadistic interludes designed to make the wimpy loser tough enough to take on the rogue former Fraternity brother Cross.

Once he's graduated by perfecting the art of the bending bullet, Wesley achieves his rite of passage to ultimate manhood -- defined as being able to kill without hesitation or remorse. Wesley's transformation, from one-time pushover to indestructible powerhouse, is not unlike that of any number of Marvel heroes,although the context and implications here are much darker than in the worlds of Spider-Man and his brethren.

Desperate to go toe-to-toe with Cross, Wesley heads to Europe and the birthplace of the Fraternity, where, under duress, its monkish leader (Terence Stamp) arranges a rendezvous aboard a train. This spectacularly outlandish action sequence, which parallels multiple earlier scenes of Wesley and Fox training on top of Chicago's El, would seem designed to cap things off. But as concocted by scripters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (who collaborated on "3:10 to Yuma" and "2 Fast 2 Furious") and Chris Morgan ("The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"), there are multiple betrayals, avenged misdeeds and literal mind-blowing still to come in a film that never lets up.

The diminutive McAvoy might have seemed an unexpected choice for this sort of kickass role, but the always inventive thesp proves he's got a bit of Russell Crowe in him as he brandishes an impressive amount of muscle, grit and anger. He may be one of those rare actors who can do just about anything. Fox is a perfect role for Jolie, a sort of fancified extension of her Mrs. Smith that allows her to be a tough babe and also gently send up the caricature. While intoning the dialogue with his usual elan, Freeman gets to be nastier than usual as the big boss in charge of all the secrets. Most of the supporting thesps register strongly on the basis of being memorable physical types.

Bekmambetov's Russian films showed he knows how to achieve the visceral effects he wants, and the vastly greater means at his disposal here provide him with the tools to supercharge his work; he will have his pick of projects now. He and his highly pro team of lenser Mitchell Amundsen, production designer John Myhre, editor David Brenner and myriad hands in the effects, makeup, stunt, location and other departments manage a consistent blend of live-action with computer effects, and Prague studio work with Chicago and New York street shooting. As if the picture needed it, Danny Elfman's score provides additional propulsion

It's good to be "Wanted."

The debut American feature by successful Russian director Timur Bekmambetov ("Night Watch" and its record-smashing 2006 sequel, "Day Watch"), this over-the-top, ultraviolent, hyperkinetic action thriller pretty much has it all.

That would include engagingly offbeat source material in the form of Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' comic book series, a decent adaptation by Michel Brandt and Derek Haas (last year's "3:10 to Yuma" remake) and Chris Morgan ("Cellular"), a terrific cast and jaw-dropping stunt work.
Then there's the visually charged talents of Bekmambetov -- a man who has funneled the best of the Wachowski brothers, Quentin Tarantino and contemporary Hong Kong action movies through his own wry sensibility.

Capably establishing the anything-goes tone of the Los Angeles Film Festival in its capacity as official curtain-raiser, the Universal guilty pleasure should make plenty of noise, especially with young males, when it opens next weekend.

James McAvoy, sporting a swell American accent, is certain to build on his big-screen appeal as Wesley Gibson, a put-upon account executive who discovers that his long-absent father belonged to a centuries-old league of supersensory assassins known as the Fraternity.

It also turns out that Gibson is a chip off the old block in the killing department, but before he can avenge his father's death, he must get into fighting shape with a little help from the Fraternity's Zen master of a leader, Sloane (Morgan Freeman), and tough-cookie Fox (Angelina Jolie, in sinewy "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" mode).

The three of them prove to be colorful assets in a film where even the bullets seem to have a personality all their own.

Set in Chicago but shot in a cleverly disguised Prague (save for a noticeably Eastern European-accented rendition of "Happy Birthday" by Gibson's fellow office workers), "Wanted" effectively hits the ground running with a steady flow of wildly inventive, CG-infused action sequences.

Also cranking things up a couple of extra notches are resident Michael Bay cinematographer Mitchell Amundsen, Oliver Stone's longtime editor David Brenner and prolific composer Danny Elfman, who skillfully dispenses with anything that could be mistaken for subtlety.

Rich Johnston says the movie's pretty similar to the comic for about twenty minutes, then takes off on its own but still includes some small bits here and there.

I'll be seeing it. I'm just disappointed by the lack of Shithead. :(

I'm sad by no more Fuckwait, that guy had the best name ever well after Shithead of course.

And yeah Millar and other guys have already said other than name and the first twenty minutes, it takes off in it's own direction with no supervillains, or what have you.

I'm really glad this movie is shaping up to be. It's making my excitement for Get Smart lessen greatly but that may have something to do with the fact that I probably wont see it until after Wanted comes out. I can totally live with that though. AHH WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO COME OUT THE SAME DAY AS WALL-E?!?! THAT'S TOO PERFECT OF A WEEKEND.

Now I haven't seen the movie (yet), but I believe that this film has THE POTENTIAL to be this generations Robocop. And by the I mean, an insane, violent, over-the-top, bullet-blazing parody.

Here's a heavy spoiler filled synopsis in case anyone wants to know the differences between the comic and film.

It's Fight Club meets Matrix, reimagined ala Magnificent Seven.


A guy shows up at an office. Secretary freaks out. He says relax, he's not there for her, if he was, she'd be dead. He spots 4 guys across the other building taking aim at him. He backs up to the elevator and jumps out the window at them, killing them all. The phone on one of the dead guys rings, and he picks it up. He says, "You shouldn't have sent amateurs to kill me." and he's told that they're the decoys as he looks down to see he's standing on an X as his head explodes. The bullet "rewinds" across town to an apartment. This is Cross.

Wesley in bed with girlfriend. She's harping. They live near a train. He knows she's cheating on him. He hates his job. He hates having anxiety. He hates his best friend taking advantage of him.

His boss is a fat white lady who gives him lots of grief.

Jolie meets Wesley at a drug store and saves him from an assassin who's tracking him named Cross. She tells him his dad died and he's inherited his cash and guns.

Big car chase across town, whereupon she takes Wesley to the Fraternity's HQ (set in a textile factory) Wesley is handed the gun and told to shoot the wings off the flies while at gunpoint. He does so and Freeman tells him if he stays he'll train him to do that and much more.

Wesley freaks out and goes home, putting the gun in the back part of the toilet tank. He sees he has 3.5 million in the bank. He decides to quit his job, telling off his boss quite loud and harshly. He smashes his best friend across the face with a keyboard resulting in lost teeth, blood and keys flying everywhere.

Outside, he sees all the newspapers are looking for him and Jolie. Jolie is parked in the car behind the newsstand and he gets in. He knows his old life is over and he wants to join the Fraternity.

They put him through tests. Between tests he's put into a healing bath that accelerates his healing in hours.

1) The Repairman - He breaks Wesley of his old habits. Everytime he does something wrong, he sees The Repairman for beatings. He learns how to take a punch, etc from him.

2) The Butcher - He learns how to use a knife from him. Ends up in the bath numerous times until he masters it.

3) The Gunsmith - How to shoot a gun. Wesley is impressed by how real the corpses look until he realizes they're genuine. As in the comic, it's to show him what bullets do to the body. Jolie helps train him as well.

(3.5?) The Exterminator - Some Russian guy who likes to attach explosives to rats. He helps Wesley when he's healing. When Wesley talks trash about the Fraternity, he's sent off to the Repairman for beatings.

By this point, he's ready to go after Cross, but Sloan (Freeman) doesn't think he's ready and puts him on training assignments with Fox (Jolie). He learns to jump moving trains and do other stunts. He gets an assignment to kill some rich guy, but at the last second fails to pull the trigger asking why he should die.

Backstory of the Fraternity is revealed. They are a Secret Society of weavers from the Middle Ages who noticed a pattern in the loom. The pattern generates names in binary. These people, if not killed, would go on to kill many others. Jolie's parents were killed by someone who's name was on the list but a Fraternity member refused to kill. Freeman translates the loom and gives everyone their assignments.

Wesley ends up repeating the mission, kiling the rich guy. He goes on other assignments, killing one guy by flipping his car over the limo.

Cross keeps taking out Fraternity members one by one, forcing the Fraternity to speed up the confrontation with Wesley and Cross. Wesley studies Cross, finding that he doesn't miss, he doesn't leave traces, etc.

He goes to break up with his girlfriend, kissing Jolie in front of her. Outside, he spots Cross and fires at him resulting in a chase. Wesley gets distracted by The Exterminator showing up, who is killed by Cross. Cross hits Wesley in the shoulder and leaves a traceable bullet. Wesley thinks Cross is taunting him into a confrontation.

Freeman says he's ready and gives Wesley his assignment -- Cross. He also hands Jolie her assingment -- Wesley, as soon as he leaves.

Wesley tracks the bullet down to a monastery and forces the maker of the bullet (Terrance Stamp) to arrange a meeting with Cross at a train station. Stamp flees the scene as Wesley sees Cross on the train. Jolie goes after Stamp and Wesley is alone, as Stamp and Cross planned.

Fight on the train, with Jolie shooting from a car alongside the train. She ends up jumping the car and slamming it INTO the train. This destabilizes it.

The train jumps the tracks, pulling part of it off. Wesley and Jolie are trapped on the falling side of things. Cross reaches out and catches Wesley, saving him, only to get shot in the chest by Wesley once he's pulled up.

The cabin they're in falls between the chasm, coming to a stop when wedged. Cross says he's Wesley's dad which he doesn't believe. He says that the Fraternity is bad, and he's trying to stop them. Jolie confirms it's true as Wesley shoots the flooring out and falls below. It's not that Cross doesn't miss, he just didn't want to kill Wesley and was trying to free him from Fox's influence at that first meeting. This is why Wesley was only shot in the arm.

Stamp rescues Wesley and puts him up in his dad's apartment (across the street from Wesley's apartment -- which if you're paying attention at the beginning of the film it'll be obvious when they backtrack the shot fired across town) Shows him pics of him as a kid, and tells him the truth. That Sloan's name came up on the loom and has been manipulating the Fraternity to kill people for him.

He stumbles on his dad's secret cache of weapons. Wesley uses the money to buy lots of peanut butter and goes to the dump to lure some rats and steals a dump truck. He attaches explosives to them and drives up to the Fraternity's HQ for the final showdown.

He backs up, dumping the rats who flee everywhere, eventually resulting in huge explosions everywhere. Wesley jumps out of the truck and starts killing everyone in sight. Taking guns as they fall out of bad guy's hands to reload, sliding, jumping, just people dropping left and right. He shoots The Repairman in the face and puts his hand through the hole, firing away at everyone.

He climbs stairs to take on The Butcher, getting cut bad, but eventually trapping The Butcher's knife in the bullet barrel and breaking it off, before firing it into The Butcher. Following it up with a kick to push it through The Butcher.

Bloodied he walks into the main room of the Fraternity to confront Sloan, Fox, Gunsmith, etc. They have him surrounded, Wesley holds up a kill order, revealing it as Sloan's. Sloan confesses and says that he saved everyone else in the room too, when their names came up. If they want to go by the strict rule of the loom, they're welcome to shoot themselves otherwise, "Kill this MFer!"

Jolie winks at Wesley as Gunsmith raises his gun. Jolie curves a bullet around the room, killing everyone, including herself.

Sloan has fled. Wesley can't find him.

Wesley goes to check his ATM, only to find his balance is -35 or something. He appears broken.

Next scene shows him back at his desk with a voice over, as Sloan armed with a gun approaches him from behind. It's not Wesley but a decoy. Freeman looks down to see he's standing on an "X" and says "F***!" as a bullet explodes through his head, only to "rewind" across town to Wesley's dad's apartment where Wesley turns to look at the camera and says, "(paraphrasing) I had a sucky life, job, girlfriend, bestfriend and gave it all up. What have YOU done lately?" As it rewinds, the bullet passes through a doughnut his boss is eating, the energy drink his best friend is drinking while in the company of his ex-gf.

They need to get the copyright issues worked out so that they can use the Ness character Mamet created in The Untouchables. I don't know why Bendy couldn't just make up his own fictional cop without stealing that one.

Shee-ittt!!! They want Torso as a blockbuster, all they gotta do is have Chris Tucker play Eliot Ness--blackify it--change his name to Elly (rhymes with Nelly) or Nessy, give him an attitude and some nice threads. He'd look stylin' in some period piece clothes, the hat a little tilted for effect. And then you can have rappers play his group--what they called again?--The Unknowns, something like that?
