View Full Version : Fly Problem: Help

Here are the facts.
Over the last 3 days, we've had what I call an infestation of flies in the house. In the 3 years that we lived in the house I could count on one hand the amount of times I've seen a fly inside the house but lately they're a major issue.
They're mostly concentrated in the kitchen. As many as 12 have been spread out throughout various parts of the kitchen. There's no food outside of the fridge and no open containers in the kitchen. Our garbage disposal broke about 2 weeks ago though so I don't know if there is something festering inside.
We have a bunch of window air conditioners but they're sealed pretty well and we never had the problem before.
We also have an attic that I'm thinking may be housing some sort of dead animal but it's about 120 degrees up there and I haven't made the trip.
So any experts in here have any idea how all of a sudden we're had all these flies and what can be done to get rid of them. We have kids and pets so I can't fume bomb the house.
But these bastards are slowly driving me insane. I must have killed 20 of em this morning and afternoon and I come home in the evening and there are another dozen.

Somewhere in or around your house, a pile of eggs were planted and hatched. You'll just need to kill them all and then it shouldn't repeat. We've had this happen once in a while. It's a pain but it's not long term.

There is dead animal flesh somewhere in your house and you need to find it and remove it to solve the problem. It's probably not in your garbage disposal because every time you would run water down the drain, the flies would come out. Check for a dead mouse under/behind the refrigerator first, then the stove. Check under the sink. Do you have central air? Check the vent leading to your kitchen. You could wait it out I suppose...
Get your house cleaned and call an exterminator?

Are you sure they're not bees? In your eyes?

I don't kill flies. I trap them in a jar and release them outside. But I'm a good person.

yeah, yeah yeah.
like its been mentioned, there're prolly maggots around your house. look around where trash has been lying around. 'specially trash with a buncha meat innit. take care of 'em, then the flies should stop repopulatiing.
if you want a good aersol killer, use black flag on the fuckers.
they drop dead, literally after a few hours of being exposed to that shit.
just make sure the areas well ventilated.

Oh, yeah - you've got a dead thing somewhere. It might be a mouse in the wall, or something under the house (could also be a dirty trash can, or something).
Lemme tell ya a quick story...
My sister and I went to a party supply place - one of those big ones that provide the linens, tables, fountains - that sort of thing. Anyway, we're standing at the counter, talking to the girl, and a maggot drops onto the counter. We look up, and can't see where it could have come from. Fluke, we figure. She cleans it up and we talk a little more, and ...plop. Another maggot. We look up again, and in the corner of the drop ceiling panel, there's a tiny little hole. The girl is freaking out by now, and she tapes over the hole. Having watched one too many CSI shows, I said, "You've got something dead in your attic" - and, of course...being the little devil I am...I suggested it was human.
We came back a week later, and asked the girl if she found out what it was. It was a body all right - the body of a rat.
So...gotta have something dead around, or meat in the trash. But as maggots these flies probably already consumed it, and just need to get out of the house to find new dead things. (I'm also a catch-and-release type - open the windows, and let them out).
Oh...one more thing. We have feral cats in our back yard and we feed them dry catfood. We've figured out how much to feed them so they'll eat most of it at one time and not leave food just sitting there. If they don't eat it all, and even though it's a processed dry cat food, it does attract flies. If you have cats or a dog that you feed outside, this could attract flies to your yard, and then they get inside when you open the door. We've had this problem once or twice, but have a really good hunter cat in the house who catches and eats 'em if I can't shoo them back outside.
