I'm really excited to read this, I've been putting off buying the trades for a long time just for this. I was expecting it to be an oversized omnibus though.

How much is it?

I started reading some of a friend's a while back, but I never got around to finishing it (not for lack of liking it, but having the series there put in front of me... it was almost intimidating trying to find the time to read it all).

I think it's a fair price. That's 17 issues, which would be $50.83 if you bought it in singles (well, with current prices).

I'm the friend Fred borrowed Starman from (and I'm back to the benbo, apparently). Being a huge fan of Starman, this caught my eye, but I can't bring myself to spend 50 dollars on 17 issues of a book I get an entire run of for around 80. I'm really glad to see a release for it though, as the trades seem to be hard to find. This definitely needs to make the rounds again.

So do I, but I am upgrading my floppies to HC's, if I like the quality of the collected editions. I have been holding off on ordering this one since I knew it was not oversized, but I think I will go ahead and bite the bullet based on what folks are saying here.

I have all the originals (well, except for the Batman/Hellboy/Starman series), but I ordered this anyway. It was 1/2-off at DCBS. Gonna try to get the rest of them 1/2 off, too. No rush, so I can be patient. Beats buying the incomplete trades or having a bunch of comics in long boxes in my basement. Or paying even more $ to have them custom bound myself.

I'm still mulling about whether I want to pick this up or not. I know that I do because it's BEAUTIFUL, but also, I already own all the issues. The one thing I have heard is that The Shade's Journals aren't included with their original issues, they will be included in chunks, as will the one-shots, but hey, that's a small complaint. At least they're being collected.

I paid $25 through DCBS and each subsequent volume should be $30 through them since they offer 40% discounts.

37% off at www.instocktrades.com - $31.49 and orders over $50 get free shipping, which is what you were expecting to pay anyway so essentially you now you get a free book or two.

Those Iron Man and and Hulk Omnibus are kicking my ass. I should get this at some point since people keep raving about them. I'm trying not to buy that many extra trades right now though until I get my backlog under control, 35 trades to go but things like this keep making it hard to do.

I thought it might be oversized but I guess it would be over $50 then. I was a little concerned about the paper, as long as it's not the Fourth World kind. Glossy or dull? I would assume it's a glued spine too.

I've got the singles, and am still torn on this. I'm not usually a double-dipper. Does it have the Shade's Journal text pieces (or did they not start until after 16)? I'm pretty sure the trades lacked these.

I have heard from someone who has already picked it up that said this volume doesn't contain any of the Shade's Journal text pieces, but does say they will be collected in a later volume. It's a bummer they're not included with the issue they ran in, but as long as they're collected it's fine with me. I mean hell, those tell most of the story of the Starman of 1951.

It's been that line of thinking that kept me from even giving this series a shot to begin with. I always hoped it would come out collected in HC form, so I just found other stuff to keep my interest in the meantime and waited it out.

Someone on comicbloc.com who said they work for DC Collected Editions said they're putting the Shade journal entries together in another volume since they tell one complete story and they don't need people hunting around 2 pages at a time.

They also said the Shade Showcase stories should be in Vol 2 and Batman/Hellboy/Starman should be in Vol 4.

The more I hear about this, the more I think of getting this version of the series rather than getting someone's complete run off Ebay.

Having read it in singles format, it's certainly appealing to have all the side-stories collected somewhere official, but I think compacting the Shade's journal pieces is a big mistake. Part of the reason I loved the journal entries so much was their slow journey in to The Shade's psyche as Starman's main story progressed. Sure, the plot isn't relevant, but it helps build up The Shade's mystique as a character. They were written as diary entries, and to be honest, will likely read in a tedious manner when collected.

I liked the small regular chunks, but I can also see how it would be nice to have them all in one volume so that you can read it through without worries of forgetting what was said in the Journals between volumes. As long as they collect all the material...I'm happy.

Yeah, that's why I went for the double dip on these despite my trades. It sucks that it's not oversized, but it's supposed to included EVERYTHING. The Shade mini, the Showcase stories, the 80 Page Giant, and the Hellboy/Batman issues. It'll be so nice to have that all just lined up in a row of books.

Cool, thanks Denny. I'm definitely going to switch up now since I still have a Walking Dead HC I can add to the order. Amazon is moving much slower on stuff these days I'm noticing. They're going out of their way to combine shipments even if you don't want them to. Last night I had to go through and turn one order into five, otherwise they weren't going to ship anything I had on my list until fucking August when the Bendis DD Omnibus hit. Fucking sad.

The paper, extras, and presentation are all better with the Omnibus. And you can't go wrong with Instocktrades.com's price.

My copy was made even sweeter on Friday when Tony Harris sketched a Jack Knight inside. I was also psyched to hear he is indeed doing new wraparound covers for all the volumes, keeping a similar theme with the borders, etc.

Well, I may never get a Tony Harris sketch, so this'll have to do. I went with a ebay store, got it for under $30 with shipping. I'm just hoping the quality's what they promise it is.

These are amazing comics, they really meant a lot to me when they were coming out new.

But the Omnibus is pretty much a rip-off. 17 non-oversized issues, and they're missing content, for $50 list?

I have higher hopes for this week's hardcover of Grant Morrison's JLA - 10 issues, oversized, and $30 list.

Not sure how the same company can be so schizophrenic about their collected editions.

I think he's referring to the omission of Shades Journal. Those are supposed to be in a later volume, so they can be read together, and the reader not having to flip through to read them in order.

I was in heaven when this was announced. I collected Starman in the singles. I collected it in the trades, and now I'm collecting the COMPLETE Starman in the Omnibus format. I am debating on unloading the original trades since I'm getting them and the missing issues in the Omnibi. While I would have loved an oversized Omnibus, I can live with, and am content with what DC gave us. It is far better than nothing and the paper quality is a vast improvement. I was afraid they may go the way of the Death and Return of Superman when I realized it was an Omnibus, I can not explain how relieved I am that my worst fears were not realized. I can not wait for Volume 2 to come out and I hope the others follow close behind. Now if only they could collect Preacher and Hitman the same way I could die a happy man.

JLA has 60% of the content at 60% of the price.

The fact that Morrison and JLA can move a greater volume of product probably allows DC to offer the oversized format without a price increase.

But to say it is a rip-off is a bit silly.

Think of it this way: If you bought 17 issues of SIMON DARK (mediocrity with ads!) at cover price, it'd run you 51 bucks at least. For your 50 STARMAN bones, you get a classic, fantastic book on great, heavy paper stock with about 10 pages of back-up essay and behind-the-scenes info, all in a snazzy hardback volume with great original cover art.
