View Full Version : F*@% YEAH!! moments

In honor of the amazingly awesome, but now defunct Dave's Longbox blog, I thought it'd be fun to get everyone to name their favorite "FUCK YEAH!" moments in comics.

(if you're at all uncertain about just what may consist of a "FUCK YEAH!" moment, here's one of Dave's -- http://daveslongbox.blogspot.com/2005/10/f-yeah-files-2-daredevil-born-again.html )

I'll chime in with a few of mine in a bit -- once I think of them...

I've got a recent one. It's not near so visceral as the awesome Dave's Long Box pick, but for anyone who'd been reading the new Nova series from the beginning, it was a definite "F*@% YEAH!!" moment. Spoilers to follow for Nova and Annihilation Conquest...

Right, so anyone who read Annihilation or who follows the current Nova knows that Nova's constant advisor is the Xandarian Worldmind, a sentient supercomputer uploaded into his mind as the entirety of Xandar was destroyed by the Annihilation Wave. The Worldmind is everything Richard Ryder isn't - smart, patient, tactical, unemotional. And its constant refrain whenever Nova's about to go up against impossible foes or do something taxing when his suit's power is dwindling is, "Richard, it is imperative that you pay attention at this time."

Which Nova rarely does, much to the Worldmind's consternation. The kid's always rushing in, headfirst. But still the Worldmind tries...

"It is imperative that you pay attention at this time..."

"It is imperative that you pay attention at this time..."

"It is imperative that you pay attention at this time..."

That's the Worldmind. Strategic. Smart. Responsible.

The Worldmind probably utters that line at least once per issue for the first half dozen issues of Nova and plenty of times in the space of the Annihilation miniseries in general. NOW...I don't remember if this happens in Nova's own book or the last issue of Annihilation Conquest, but just as things are bleakest, with Ultron in control, the Kree empire enslaved and dying, and the Phalanx ready to start looking for their next target...Nova escapes his interdimensional exile and finally makes the scene. Only now he's backed by restored powerhouses like Gamora, Warlock and Drax the Destroyer. On the edge of Kree space where the Phalanx have erected a force wall sectioning off the entire sector, Nova and company ready their final stand. They think they know how to break through. They've got a daring plan that just might turn the tide.

It's do or die time as Nova addresses the troops. This is how he begins...

"IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU PAY ATTENTION AT THIS TIME..."

Total ""F*@% YEAH!!" moment for me. The instant the kid became a man.

8-) Nice.

So, I've been thinking, and I realize that at least two of my favorite moments I've already mentioned in another thread, recently... but I think they're worth mentioning again.

Both of them belong to Daredevil, and both of them are climactic showdowns.

I'm pretty sure the nature of what this thread is about means it's gonna be spoiler heavy, but just to be sure, here's the break...

First is the final confrontation between a black-clad, bandanna'd Matt Murdock and the Kingpin's first personal assassin, Mr. Larks, at the end of Daredevil: The Man Without fear. Every milestone in the series has built up to this moment, when Matt finally masks his identity, picks up an old police baton, and sets out to save the life of a young girl named Mickey. After discovering where the Kingpin's men have taken Mickey (along with many other children, to be sold into slavery), and battling through an army of guards, Matt has finally cornered Larks in an abandoned warehouse. Matt is tired, he's wet, he's in pain, and he is standing across the room from Larks, who holds a gun to Mickey's head.

All Matt can say is, "I don't want to kill you. Let her go."

Larks, figuring this dude is crazy, fires a shot at Matt. The shot clips Matt's arm, but he doesn't move.

"I don't want to kill you," Matt repeats. "Let her go."

Larks's bravado starts to falter. He shoots at Matt again. This time, Matt swats the bullet out of the air with his baton. The bullet hits the ground at Larks's feet and, shocked, Larks asks, "Damn... who the devil are you??"

And that sparks the memory of Matt's childhood nickname... the name all the kids used to taunt him with... "Call me Daredevil. Please, I don't want to kill you. Let her go."

But Larks just isn't listening. He shoots again. Strike three. Matt smacks the bullet back at Larks, nailing him between the eyes.

I think what makes the moment so powerful for me, aside from the obvious tension release, is the fact that Matt doesn't even hesitate. Doesn't even entertain the notion that he might not succeed. He sets his sights (as it were) on his goal, and nothing... not even a firing gun, is going to deter him.

In that moment, when the stakes were at their highest, he truly became the man without fear.

Fuck. Yeah.

Second one, I'm sure everyone here is familiar with.

Daredevil vol.2 issue #49. Daredevil vs. Bullseye. The most intense, most vicious encounter these two enemies have ever had. And what makes it so, is the history between them... The memory of everything Bullseye has put Matt through. The pain he has caused... And Matt just... fucking... loses it. Drives Bullseye to the ground, pummeling him with punches, even as he verbally dissects the man, literally adding insult to injury. And when he has Bullseye on his back, pathetic and bloody, what does Matt do...?

He picks up a rock...

And he carves a fucking bullseye into the bastard's forehead.

"THIS IS FOR ELEKTRA!"

"THIS IS FOR KAREN!!!"

Holy shit. Has to be the most cathartic moment I've ever experienced while reading a comic. Because I've been so involved in this character's life... been so touched by his victories and his tragedies... that when he finally gets this revenge on Bullseye for the things he's done... I feel it too. I felt that release as much as Matt did.

FUCK yeah.

I know I've got more... but those two are the big ones.

Robbie Robertson telling J. Jonah Jameson off.

Ironically your post reminds me of a classic "F*@% YEAH!!" moment of JJJ actually standing up for Robbie. Goes all the way back to a late-era Stan Lee story, the famous "Death of Captain Stacy." Over at the Daily Bugle, scumbag politician Sam Bullit has come down to confront JJJ over withdrawing the paper's support. Bullit's running on a "law and order" platform, but JJJ's finally realized he's a thug with some particularly suspicious backers. Here's how the climactic scene goes down, and remember this was 1971, so there's no line of dialogue that doesn't end in an exclamation point... ;)

ROBBIE: I haven't been City Editor all these years for nothing! I know where you support comes from! I know about the lunatic hate groups who are backing you! I know what you really mean by "law and order!" I know what you think of minority groups -- and the plans you've got for them!

BULLIT: Anyone ever tell ya you know too much, black man?

JJJ: Shuddup! Robbie is gonna hang you, Bullit! My paper's acting on the evidence he's gathered! We're renouncing our support of you! We're switching to Nelson! You've had it, bigot!

ROBBIE: And don't think we're bluffing, man! I've got it all down here -- names, dates and places!

BULLIT: Tell 'im he can shove it, Jameson! Evidence don't mean nothing unless ya can use it! And sambo ain't never gonna use it!

JJJ: Get out, Bullit! You're turning my stomach!

*Bullit storms out*

ROBBIE: I think he just quit our fan club, Jonah!

JJJ: Now ain't that a shame?
F*@% YEAH!!

Don't think he's bluffing, man. 8-)

As much as Morrison's Batman was later responsible for ubering Batman beyond recognition...

That scene was pure geek Nirvana.

I'm also a fan of the "Flash facts" scene from that same storyline. It's a scene where the JLA really take the fight to the bad guys and it revolves around the Flash (Wally) remembering how Barry used to teach him cool Flash-power stuff in a kind of amusingly Silver Age way. I don't have the trade one me at the moment to look it up, but...the scene's a doozy. Just a two page sequence or so, yet it's one of my all-time favorite Flash moments. The cadence to the narration is everything and Wally jacks that Martian UP!

Oh lordy me, let's see...

Issue #1 of DKR when we finally see the full page shot of Bruce back in the costume jumping through the air. It took half the issue to get there, but damn was it sweet.

In Miracleman 14, When Johnny Bates, who has been so brave for so long holding off the voice in his head, finally says his magic word and transforms back into Kid Miracleman, blowing the boy who was raping him in half. It was more of an Oh Fuck than a Fuck Yeah, but damn...

Oh, forgot one of my favorites:
Cerebus 149: After putting us through 3 1/2 years of Cerebus the house guest and Cerebus the catatonic, we finally get Cerebus the avenger. Cerebus overhears two Cirinist guards talking about Jaka, the love of his life, and how she was slated for execution. Thinking that Jaka is dead, Cerebus goes on a rampage, killing the two Cirinist guards. The only problem is that Cirinists are women, and women, as everyone knows, can read minds and are all telepathically connected. He flashes back to years before, when his friend, Bear, first tells him about the Cirinists, and how he saw a group of them keep a man running all night, keeping pace with him and killing him with small cuts. Knowing how screwed he is, Cerebus holds his blade to his throat, knowing that he is destined to die alone, unmourned and unloved, and is about to kill himself. Then he sees the first of several Cirinists about to swarm upon him. He sets his jaw, and runs, not with fear in his eyes, but rather a look of anger and determination.
This leads to issues 150-162, the Flight arc, which contains a metric ton of Oh Fuck moments.

A fairly recent one but probably one of the best instances I can think of.

Astonishing X-Men # 23: Cyclops is prisoner on the Breakworld, chained to a table, completely powerless(Or so we're led to believe) and being tortured by Powerlord Kruun. Kruun just realised that the conversation he had heard earlier between the X-Men had been staged and the following dialogue occurs

Kruun: Lies. The Great Human Weapon. Pathetic.

Cyclops: I'd say "pathetic" would be falling for them. Especially Kitty's.

Kruun: AND FOR WHAT!?? There is no "Leviathan" there is no one who can save you! Why do you bother with plots? WHAT OTHER LIES HAVE YOU TOLD?!!

It is with this that Cyclops unleashes the biggest Optic blast ever seen lighting up an entire city. The X-Men, from their various points in the city stare on in awe. Then the best passing of the torch line in comic history comes from Cyclops.

We need some lesser-known picks here.

A personal favorite of mine is from Sin City - the first one, now known as The Hard Goodbye I think. This is late in the story after Marv's already had his ass handed to him by Kevin once before. We see Marv go to the store and buy all this equipment to help him exact his revenge - razor wire, gasoline, a saw, handcuffs; all kinds of shit - but when he goes up against Kevin again, the little bastard is still too much for him. He sidesteps Marv's traps, he ducks his punches, he's kicking the shit out of Marv.

Marv takes it all and finally gets Kevin in close enough to slap the handcuffs on to him - one end on Kevin's wrist, one on his own. And Kevin's STILL a wily son of a bitch, still kicking Marv straight in the face. But he can't get any distance from Marv, and really, all Marv needs is one good shot.

You flip the page and the panel is just Marv's Thor-sized fist smashing across the silhouette of Kevin's face, Kevin's glasses shattering to pieces.

One punch. Just happened to be the toughest, most impactful punch in the history of comics.

F*@% YEAH.

Got another one.

Uncanny X-Men (#326?) Onslaught: Phase 2.

Manhattan is a warzone. It's Onslaught and his army of Sentinels vs. the united powers of the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four.

A mixed squad, led by Cyclops, are blasting their way toward Onslaught, who has set up shop in Central Park. When the incursion team finally reaches him, they find that he has mutated into a more powerful form. There is a showdown, and of course, Onslaught is talking shit like a pro. Just to taunt them, Onslaught's body warps, and he reveals Prof. Xavier trapped within.

Cyclops smiles... That's what they were waiting for.

He rips off his visor and sends a full optic blast at Onslaught. This, of course, catches Onslaught off guard... but more importantly, it blasts away most of the organic restraints holding Xavier in place. This doesn't really bother Onslaught... it's only his corporeal form. He rises to his feet, and sends a vicious grin at the heroes.

"Are... You... Finished?"

Close-up on Cyclops. "I dunno. Thor, are we finished?"

And Thor comes careening from behind the heroes, leading with his hammer.

"I SAY THEE NAY!!!"

And he blasts a hole straight through Onslaught, carrying Xavier out the other side.

One of those moments when Cyclops really proved himself as a leader, and one of the coolest Marvel Team-Up moments. Thor was never cooler to me than he was in that moment.

I can't find a scan, but in DK2, when WW tells Captain Marvel to "Go out with a lion's roar" or something like that, and then:

SHAZAM!

Swamp Thing #53.

Backstory: While Swampy's gone, his girlfriend is snatched by authorities, charged with "sexual offenses" (aka: boffing Swamp Thing), and transferred to Gotham City for extradition.

Then Swamp Thing comes back.

During Millar's Authority

I can't remember the issue. It was when The Authority got replaced with an even worse version of them.

Mignighter comes and kills Teuten with a drill to the head then commences killing all of the bastard Authority members, much to the chagrin of his returning teammates.

the final arc of Transmet:

The Smiler has the gun on a weaponless Spider. Wehn Spider calmly tells him he's been recording the whol time the Smiler has admitted all the shit he'd done

That was great!

During Ignition, when Flash tells Batman that unlike Batman's Rogues, his Rogues are sane, organized, and don't leave clues around to help out the hero.

I thought

Apollo killed Teuten because his powers returned

Am I remembering this wrong?

Really, Thor has a ton of fuck yeah moments. One of my favorites was during the Jurgens run with thanos- after thor gets his ass handed to him by a super-super-powered thanos he gets some magical gaunlets and shit and goes to town. This is what happens:

I think the last line was a much better "fuck yeah" moment.

"One percent."

Followed by Spider's crazy-ass laugh.

Brubaker's Captain America has been full of these moments:
-Cap in Arlington National Cemetery explaining the history of the alternate Caps
-"Remember who you are."
-Cap gets killed.
