Last year, for The Con (can you really call it anything else anymore?), my wife and I (with Dan Taylor and his gf) rented a condo. We had a great time, so immediately after The Con, she tried to reserve it for this year. The owner said he wasn't taking reservations yet, and we should call back after the start of the year, which we did; we reserved it for about a week, and signed the paperwork.

Last night, the owner let us know that he double-booked, and that the other person had their reservation in before we did. And that he doesn't have anyplace else for us to stay. So now, precisely ten weeks before The Con starts (and months after everything from Oceanside to the Mexican border has been booked), unless something changes...

WE HAVE NO PLACE TO STAY IN SAN DIEGO.

Now if this were a hotel that did this, they would have pulled strings and found us another place to stay. This guy says he's looking, but I doubt he's putting much effort into it. Even if we can find a place, it'll probably be more expensive, and not be as close to the Hyatt. Both of which are unacceptable options. I'm at the point where even if he does find us another place, he's going to have to pay anything over the price that we had agreed to pay him.

And seriously - if you only rent out a handful of places to rent, how effing tough is it to know if a weekend has already booked?

And Dan - we're going to fix this. No need for you to be alarmed yet.

If you're comfortable staying with strangers, try couchsurfing. It's a community of travelers who open their houses for you to stay at. I've used it before, it's very helpful if you're desperate for a place to stay.

Try some of the places in Hotel Circle. I had no problem getting a room there around this time three years ago. The whole area is convenient to the downtown trolley. It's not downtown, but close enough that it isn't a haul.

Try some of the local hotels not on the circuit like the Super 8. Also there's Coronado across the bridge, not exacty convenient but not in Mexico.
