For 29 years, i'd always assumed my pops was in the Army. Wears camo-uniform. Spent 15yrs as a K9 trainer. 5 years as police. Never corrected me when I said he was in the Army.
Today, while looking through old pictures from Japan, I see a picture of someone in a brown shirt, air force patches. "DeLay" name patch, holding a baby rabbit. Can't see his face.
"Hey, pops, who's this guy in the AirForce shirt with our last name?"
"um ... ME."
"Say whaaat!? You were in the Army, right?"
"*LAUGHING* No, what gave you that idea?"
So, there ya go. Ben, Albert, Ben, bartleby, confirmation I need to get out of my cave more.
I always thought my dad was one kind of doctor, but then I found out he was a slightly different (but qualitatively similar) kind of doctor!!! I was so out of touch!

My buddies dad told the whole family he was a Vietnam vet. When my buddy was 25, he found out it was just one of the lies he used to explain why he didn't have a job. Rough stuff, I can't even imagine...
Totally different than your story, but it reminded me of it.

It's only funny when you're in complete befuddlement over something that the rest of society seemingly understands and accepts.

Next he's going to tell you that you're adopted.

No, that's when we tell him that there is no Santa.

What if it turns out that his biological father is actually Santa Claus?

Then the Air Force is a great cover.

His adopted father is the Air Force. Santa is his biological father.

My dad was a Marine. And I always knew he was an embassy guard, because that's how he met my mom . . . her dad was a diplomat at the embassy in Bogata, where my dad was stationed.
But I never heard him talk about being a Marine. . . until the first time we went to Vegas; it was Taxman and I, my mom & dad and one another couple (my dad's best friend); and we were waiting for a table at the California Pizza Kitchen at The Mirage. My dad and his friend were talking about boot camp; he had gone through Camp Pendleton and his friend had gone through Parris Island and they were swapping stories. That's when I heard my dad say he would rather go through boot camp twice then go through embassy training again.
It was the only time I ever heard him talk about his time in the military.
yikes. My pops was Marine Corps and did 4 combat tours in Vietnam, then was a drill instructor for a bit. His DD-214 is very long but he never talks about any of it, even when asked.

It's only funny when you're in complete befuddlement over something that the rest of society seemingly understands and accepts. Does it help that the rest of my family knew?
