Coldplay site immediately implodes.

But yeah, you should be able to get the new song Violet Hill from http://www.coldplay.com at some stage. Available for a week. No idea if it's any good yet, website remains broken. Quite like Coldplay if I'm in the right mood for them.

Actually working now. Isn't bad, interesting slightly louder crashing stylings earlier on before reverting to type for the ending.

WHAT?! Coldplay is releasing ONE whole song for free?!

Stop the presses!

Somewhere, NIN and Radiohead are chuckling to themselves.

Coldplay is unfortunately most likely more popular than both of them and probably makes more money.

Hey, it's actually a pretty good song!
I didn't like X&Y but Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head definitely are some great Britpop albums.

You're joking, right?

Radiohead is one of, if not the biggest (possibly behind...ughhh....U2) bands in the world, and NIN has a following like you wouldn't believe.

I enjoyed Coldplay up until their latest endeavor (X&Y as I recall) and just think their music is too simplistic and pop.

Radiohead are one of the few bands on earth that can afford to give whole albums away, safe in the knowledge they'll still make money off the release in terms of touring and hardcore fans buying the eventual physical release anyway.

And NIN did give away an instrumental album, which might not have been as commercially viable (note I did not say "as good") as an album with full vocals, and the free element wasn't even the whole thing.

Giving away a single song to plug an upcoming album seems to be becoming fashionable, in Britain at least. Feeder and British Sea Power both did it recently, that I can recall. Probably is Radiohead's fault.

That's why I said most likely. I'm not a Radiohead fan so I don't really know what their following's like but I did think that they might have a larger following than Coldplay...

I dunno though... I know there are probably more kids out there who listen to Coldplay than listen to Radiohead. Coldplay just fits into that easy pop radio friendly mold so easily.

I'm an NIN fan (listening to the Fragile right now) but I dunno... I know they're popular as hell but I dunno if they're more popular than Coldplay.

Good song.
Definitely hear the Eno influence in there.

Up to yesterday I thought that Timbaland would produce the new Coldplay album...

Not that it seemed a particularly good idea - but would have been something different...

Edit after listening to Violet Hill: I mean, do they really have anything new to bring to the game?

Don't really know if it's larger, but I know that NIN's fanbase is alot more established, with NIN having alot longer of a career (around 20 years)

Radiohead didn't actually give a cd out for free - they just let the downloaders decide on the amount of money they wanted to pay - and at least half of them paid.

NIN didn't to my knowledge put their 3 cd's to download for free, but for 5 bucks. Saul William's CD Niggy Stardust (which Trent Reznor produced) was free for the first 50 or 500 000 downloaders.

It's not like all of the aforementioned guys (don't know about Saul Williams) don't have enough cash to provide themselves. I think it's brilliant that Reznor and Radiohead are doing something to the fact that most of the money from the albums they sell go (or have gone) to the record companies, and on the other hand are on the media forefront of finding alternatives to the state record industry is in at the moment - with the illegal downloads and such.

All I'm saying is that NIN and Radiohead have done way more than Coldplay, yet people are acting like this is a big deal.

I agree fully. What's the big deal with giving a track for free on the net, if you're likely to hear that particular song on the radio up to nuisance in the following weeks-and anyways can hear it on Myspace or Youtube or where-ever?

Sure, it's a cool gesture for fans, but not a reson to give the band tons of free commercial press.

I don't think people are treating this like a big deal cause its free -- more like people that like Coldplay are getting new music from the band.

Heard it on the radio this morning. Its a new-ish sound for them. Not the single I would have expected, but a pretty good song none the less. Can't wait for the new album.

The NIN and Radiohead songs that are available for free download are being played on the radio here as well. So I don't know what this gripe is all about.

Stop with your high and mighty bullshit. Trent Reznor needs a new song that doesn't sound like the past 10 songs he's released.

I haven't liked them, really, since the first album, but this isn't a bad song. The guitar break at about 2:30 is actually pretty funky and they at least don't sound like they are sticking to the Coldplay formula. They sound more like Elbow here, actually.

Jesus.

"Whaaaaa, don't give me stuff for free. You big rich bastards can afford it, and I would just take it if I wanted it anyway!"

Nick Cave is right. People just ain't no good.

I don't know about high and mighty or about bullshit, maybe just think that putting new songs or singles to download - or at least to listen to - should be more the norm than a spectacle.

I've liked Coldplay before, and had high hopes for X&Y and was maybe because of those let down - so this time around I apprach them with a bit of skepticism, for any good it does...

NIN had it's lowpoint, but came up strong with year Zero - In This Twilight was a brilliant song. And also putting out a three-disc instrumental record isn't something you see every pop / industrial rock group do...

I didn't mean that as a personal attack to anyone on the board. I don't disagree that this will, or should become a little more commonplace. But I always geet this sense of "Radiohead is the best band in the world because they gave away their music for free" from their fans. Which its cool of them to do that and all, but why do you have to shove that fact down my throat? Their album was free, and I still didn't download it. Sue me. People have been downloading music for free for years. Only this time it was legal.

Exactly. Coldplay releasing a new single for free isn't big news because it should be part of the industry standard.

It's not bitching, it's just calling what it is: non-news acting as real news.

Radiohead isn't nearly as big as Coldplay....what's the last radio hit they had?

Violet Hill video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IakDItZ7f7Q
Maybe the heaviest song I've heard from them.

Viva la Vida audio: http://youtube.com/watch?v=76as-3-iEuk
More traditional Coldplay--a lot of strings and lushness. Nice song.
