View Full Version : Here's a weird one for all the computer guys -

Suddenly, in the past two days, I cannot download anything.
When I try torrents I will get a "cannot save .torrent (file name)" dialogue. It gives me the option to retry or cancel. If I attempt to save a picture (right click - save) it will do nothing.
When checking Firefox's download manager, and opening the containing folder, it shows me none of the files I have downloaded (and won't even show me the desktop - where I normally download everything. It takes me to "My Documents" - and I never save anything there. It will show that it has been downloaded, but will appear nowhere on the computer.
It does the same thing in IE7.
Anyone have any ideas?

Your computer has grown sentient, has seen what you've been downloading, and is saving you from yourself.

Try looking through this:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable+to+download+or+save+files
However, if it's really both Firefox and IE7, it sounds like an antivirus/operating system/ISP-induced problem.
Glenn may have more insight than I.

Yeah, I was hoping he'd know - but still...it's Vista.
I thought it might have been FF beta at first, but since it's happening on IE too, that's probably it.
Went ahead and uninstalled AVG and Ad-Aware, going to reinstall them (when did AVG go paid? I thought it was like Avast?) and see if it works.
Still, it's a good chance it's a virus.

Worst comes to worst, I'll just reinstall Windows, which takes a half hour.

Yeah, i use HijackThis! quite a bit.
It turned out it was AVG. Since I removed it, everything's ok.

As far as I know AVG has always had a paid and free version. Paid version gets you support and firewall option though. Plus free version tags your emails sig right?

Dunno what you've got for a firewall, but try resetting the program rules. I've had similar problems with Firefox and Symantec in the past.

800 more, and we all post monkeys and/or hot chicks (which are, evolutionarily speaking, not technically monkeys but still in the primate family so, hey, close enough) in your honor. As long as the next 800 are gold, and based on the previous 200... well, don't hold your breath is all I'm saying.
