Exclusive! Three-Hour Lost Season Finale Over Two Nights!

It's official: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Steve McPherson has signed off on Lost's extraspecial 14th hour this season, which means Lost is getting a three-hour finale! The first hour airs May 15, the second and third hours will air May 29, beginning at 9 p.m. (ABC will still air the finales of Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy on May 22, as expected.)

Word is there are so many big reveals the producers wanted to deliver this season that they felt anything less than a full three-hour finale would have cheated the fans. In fact, I'm hearing that the writers' draft for the second half of the finale was 80 pages long, which led all parties involved to realize these stories had to be told now. Anything else would have felt like a rip-off for the fans.

Sucks we have to wait two weeks for it to wrap up, but I'm sure it'll be well worth it.

With commercials, it will only be 65 minutes long.

Very happy about the extra hour, though not happy about having to wait two weeks.

I'll take it, I just know I'll want it right away and that waits gonna be killer.

Cool! And this is a real three-hour finale of new show, not one hour of recaps and two hours of new show or something like that, right?

It's Official: Lost Finds Extra Hour... But There's a Twist!

It's official, Ausholes!

I can now confirm what I first teased earlier this week: Team Darlton has sealed a deal with ABC to bring us an extra hour of Lost this season.

But there's a twist.

Lost isn't the only ABC hit experiencing an unexpected growth spurt. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Grey's Anatomy will also expand its season by an hour — and it has Lost to thank!

Allow me to explain. With a 14th hour of Lost now a done deal, the show's finale will swell to three hours. But, in what can only be described as an unorthodox scheduling move, the first hour of that finale will air on May 15, and then we have to wait two weeks — until May 29 — to get the last two hours! That's right, no Lost on May 22.

Why?

Apparently, Darlton convinced ABC that the final two hours had to air together. And with the finales of Grey's and Ugly Betty already slated for May 22 at 8 and 9 pm respectively, ABC really had no other choice than to sked Lost's two-hour exit for May 29. That, in turn, created a hole on May 22 at 10 pm — hence the net's decision to tack an extra hour onto the Grey's finale.

Confused? Let me break it down for you.

May 15
8 pm: Ugly Betty
9 pm: Grey's Anatomy
10 pm: Lost (part 1 finale)

May 22
8 pm: Ugly Betty finale
9-11 pm: Two-hour Grey's Anatomy finale

May 29
8 pm: Lost encore (part 1 finale)
9-11 pm: Two-hour Lost finale

All told, a pretty fraktacular turn of events. That is, unless you have a stake in the success of Swingtown. The controversial CBS drama was scheduled to debut on May 29 at 10 pm against little or no competition. Now it's up against the most anticipated 60 minutes of television all year.

I'm all for more Lost. But how is it a three hour finale if there's a 2 week gap between them? It sounds to me like an episode and then 2 weeks later a 2 hour finale.

Edit: Nevermind

Eventually, all TV shows will be advertised as having an 11-episode premiere, followed by an 11-episode finale. The word "event" will be flashing in the background of every commercial.

This probably works out fairly well.

And I suspect the Lost encore on May 29 will do pretty well in the ratings.

Yeah, but then you have to worry about going those two weeks without somebody spoiling whatever happens in the first part.

That's pretty awesome. I'd like to skip part one and catch the encore on the 29th for a straight 3 hours, but I'll have to see if it's going to be "enhanced" or not. The pop-ups can be spoilery.

If they do it in the same way as usual (which is 43 minutes of show for a 1 hour slot), they should deliver 129 minutes of show.

That's a really odd way of saying or phrasing it...instead they should have said that Lost Season 4 gets an additional hour. I guess technically it is a three hour season finale...that is if I can get the willpower to watch all three hours on May 29th, it'll be tough to stay away from spoilers and not watch that first hour...but I'm up for a challenge! :)

anyway, another hour of Lost this year!!!

I'm probably going to watch Part I when it initially airs on March 15 and then watch it again on March 29 leading into Parts II and III.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it—and I don't know if this had anything to do with the decision, or if it's just a lucky coincidence—but they new schedule for LOST means that there won't be an episode competing with the opening night of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.

Since it is split up but they are saying the extra hour is part of the finale, then it is probably a three part finale concentrating on one character (Jack?). The gap in the finale schedule sucks, but I'm not going to complain when it means we get an extra hour of Lost!

I have a feeling the first hour and the final two hours will cover two different characters/group of characters

Wasn't the first season finale the same way?

Lost is a serialized tv show right? Sounds like a two hour finale to me seeing as 1 show just follows the next normally anyway. 3 hour hype fest more like it. Just call it 2 hour finale.

I guess they're saying it's 3 hours because it was supposed to be 2, but they've decided to stretch the last hour to 2 hours. Thus, 3 hour finale even if they aren't on the same week.
