If I learned anything from the 80's it's that if you take a killer army robot and add in a bolt of lighting you get a lovable energetic buddy. That's right I'm talking Johnny Number 5.

Cult classic Short Circuit gets new life on silver screen

Dimension Films acquired the rights to remake the 1986 film Short Circuit, about a robot, Number 5, which develops a mind of its own after being hit by lightning. It then enlists the help of humans to keep from being destructed by its makers. S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who wrote the two films in the Short Circuit series, will also handle the remake.

Seriously, I did love this movie as a kid, but I wonder about a remake, especially if, in their attempt to reinvent Johnny 5 for the 21st century, he ends up looking like the android from I, Robot. I think part of his charm was that he looked kind of junky.

Who knows-- it could be awesome. They're probably gearing it towards kids, anyway.

Really...?

I mean don't get me wrong, I loved those movies as a kid, and would totally see a new one, but... How did Hollywood look at all the potential properties that could be revived and be like... "Okay, this one... Pull Steve Guttenberg out of stasis immediately!"

I mean shit... Where's Kindergarten Cop: The Next Generation, starring Sly Stallone?

I usually reserve judgement until the actual movie comes out. I make snap judgements most of the time, but I love to be proven wrong. Of all the things to remake, I can stand a movie about robots, because technology improves so rapidly, the most high-tech shit of the day can become dated in 10 years, if not sooner.

I'm still waiting for a remake of The Last Starfighter. With our own Army using video games as promotional recruiting tools it's never been a better time.

So much mindless, reality defying violence to take in in one sitting.

I feel the need to say something about this... being that I am more machine now than man... but I really have nothing to contribute.

I was stewing over the movie-remake craze as it stands, the other day, but I was reminded that Hollywood's been remaking films since the beginning of the medium. Granted, the uptake seems to have gotten shorter and shorter, but look at Zorro, Dracula, hell, any other monster movie. I think as long as people are still going to go see them, whether eager to see a remake, or ignorant that it's even a remake, they ain't gonna stop.

Well, some of them are actually good, although the majority of them amount to a mountain of rancid dog shit.

Dawn Of The Dead was a shockingly good remake.
