Is it just me or does science have to describe some ailment to everything now days?

Maybe they just LIKE to play games?

I mean at this rate every body on the planet is going to have some form of Autism, and I think it really degrades and takes the focus off of the people with full blown Autism that needs funding and help.

It's getting a little stupid(this saying that every little strange quirk a person has is a form of Autism). IMO

Game Addicts are Autistic
Further revelations from the academic field.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK
UK, April 3, 2008 - This year's British Psychological Society Annual Conference is shaping up to be a battle royale of contesting parties screaming the head-smackingly self-evident. Following yesterday's chin-felling revelation that games are relaxing, a separate study has staked its flag atop the peaks of Mount Obvious, discovering that videogame addicts display behavioral traits similar to that seen in Asperger's sufferers.

Research, carried out by Ian Danforth of the American Whitman College and Dr John Charlton of the University of Bolton, took a predominantly male group of 391 gamers. Findings showde that players edging closer to addiction displayed traits commonly associated with Aperger's, including introversion, neuroticism and a lack of agreeableness.

Apsergers is a form of autism most commonly found in men, with some 1.2% of the population believed to be affected. Dr Charlton remarked that, "Our research supports the idea that people who are heavily involved in game playing may be nearer to autistic spectrum disorders than people who have no interest in gaming."

The more we understand the brain, the more we're going to start labeling things. I don't see a problem with it.

It's only a problem if you don't like specificity. Accurate scientific diagnoses are the reason we don't just bleed everybody anymore.

There's too many of these studies.

A lot of them aren't conducted well and the media runs with sensationalized articles based on the headlines of these studies.

That study that "finally proved" that men are attracted to beautiful women was the most senseless waste of research funding that has ever existed. Unless of course that study was conducted in someone's basement by two guys, one browsing porn on the internet and the other guy measuring his erections.

And sadly, what is "hip" and "hot" will always get the most funding.

I feel that could be a worthwhile study explaining the nature of uncontrollable attraction based off gender.

I agree that some money is probably wasted on some poorly planned scientific studies, but I can think of FAR worse things to be spending the money on. Like NASA. Fucking NASA.

Does this mean that hardcore video game players would be good to take to a casino a la Rain Man?

Does this account for people who play (near addiction) and then break the addiction? Or relapse on a regular basis?

I'll usually fall into the "Asperger's catagory" when a good game comes out, but I'll break off, not play games for a while, and then come back.

I think that a lot of people who want to ascribe everything to Asperger's have never actually met someone with Asperger's. Having one or two "similar traits" is not even worth mentioning, because the condition is a lot more than that.

I wouldn't call the racist homophobes on XBL autistic.

My ex's kid brother is autistic and he does almost nothing but play video games. He wants to be a professional tester.

Well thank the heavens for that.

And this shows that autistic people are often drawn to video games, which I don't think anyone would dispute.

Trying to draw the converse conclusion, if someone likes video games then they are autistic, is ridiculous, even tossing the adjective "hardcore" in there.

I'd say that's fair.
