As a response to Taki's "challenge" let's have a push up thread. Every day you do as many push ups at one time as you can and post the number here. We'll start today and run through April 30, 2008. I'll be interested to see how much the numbers go up.

Marc Lombardi

What's "boy-style"?

Because girls generally have less upper-body strength, they often do pushups with their knees touching the ground. Hence, the "regular" way can be referred to as "boy-style."

I just did 40 and was getting winded. I need to get back in shape.

And what is Christmas tree style?

Hands together (side to side) at chest level, feet slightly more than shoulder length apart. Harder than it sounds. Really works the internal pecs creating the "cleavage."

40

this was after 40 minutes of cardio and 15 to 20 minutes of other toning exercises

I also helped a woman do her FIRST push-up at a party on Saturday. She did only one, but I think she is ready for more now.

For people looking to improve, if you have a timer available or are good at counting off seconds in your head:

Do timed sets rather than number sets. Start with something like 20 or 30 seconds, take that long of a break, then 45 seconds, 45 second break, then a minute. Then go back down to 45, then 30. From what I've seen in myself and others, this is one of the best ways to improve muscle stamina for the exercise.

During these sets, if you can't do more pushups with your knees off the ground, then go to your knees and keep doing the sets. You'll still be doing the work, if not as much, and keep improving.

And of course, if you have your own method, please post it.

No small breaks in between pushups allowed?
That's why I only listed my initial 44 from yesterday. With a 30-45 second break I probably could have done another 30-40. But I also agree that counting as many as you can do in, say, two minutes with as many breaks as you need in between is still productive and still a good way to gauge how many you're capable of doing. Fewer breaks mean more push-ups.

Last night I got up to 38. I'm doing them all in a row, without rest between sets like I would in a push-up contest.

I think this is where discrepancies happen. We have some who crank them out quickly, others taking their time, others taking a rest between them to get an extra push...it don't matter. We're just trying to push ourselves to be stronger and more fit you know. Any exercise is better than no exercise and I totally forgot to do it last night so I'll try and do one this afternoon and increase tonight to make up for it. Sorry guys. :(
