View Full Version : How many push-ups can you do?

Taki Soma

At work, there is a contest going on between a couple of co-workers of mine and I told them about how many do... so how many can you do?

When I work out, I do about 30; I've never pushed myself to see how many I can do, but maybe I will just to find out.

I'm not sure if I can even do one. I can do them, but they might not be legal pushups :)

I guess I could do about 35-40 if I got on the ground right now and gave it a shot. If I really pushed myself, I could probably do 50.

I max out at 150 and then my arms feel like jelly. I have no idea how those crazy Japanese dudes on Unbeatable Banzuke do 275 of them in 3 minutes.

EDIT: Let me clarify. These are not 150 in a row. These are supersets. I do one set of 50, one set of 40, one set of 30 then as many more (up to 30). Each set has a 30-second break in between.

Same here. I'll try some later today, when my brother and roommate leave the house and I can embarrass myself without audience.

I can do about 35 now.

When I was in high school, I won a push-up contest with 89 but I could have kept going. I was working out a lot for wrestling I got to the point where I could just basically keep going and going and going...

My last apartment came with a pull up bar, every time I walked under it I would do as many as I could.

i would imagine that he could use his legs and feet to help get himself back up. push ups usually restrict that sort of thing.

I gave it a try last night.

14... :(

I then rested for 30 seconds and came back with 10.

This is sad. A few years ago, I could do 55-60 in 2 minutes.

I am determined to get back up to 50 by the end of the month.

actually, it does-- from my understanding, it's better for you to give yourself micro-rests between sets.

That's why people with free-weights do one arm and then the other in sets of 10...

i've never actually tried for more than 100, but it's rare that i actually try to max out. usually i'll just do 5 sets of 20.

in the army, i never tried more than 72 (in 2 minutes) because at 72 you maxed out for the points you could earn on the pt test. doing any more would be an ego boost maybe, but you still had to do your sit-ups (max = 82 in 2 minutes) and run 2 miles (in 12.5 minutes) and i wanted to conserve energy for those events; especially the run. i HATE running.

10 sets of 100 every other night.

wow. i know i could probably eventually condition myself to get to a number like that, but it seems like it would take forever to get that kind of endurance.

if you don't mind me asking, how long did it take for you to build up that kind of muscular endurance? also, are you doing any other kind of lifting or just body weight exercises? i mostly use the push-ups, chin-ups, and crunches i do (3 nights a week) to supplement my regular lifting (2 nights a week) and ma training (3 - 5 nights a week). i don't think i could handle that kind of added physical strain and still recuperate every day; at least not without upping my calorie intake and sleep time.

with the additional ma training you do, do you have to keep your kcal / carb intake up to have the energy to knock out 1,000 a night?

sorry for all the questions. it's just 10 sets of 100 is an amazing feat imo. definitely something to aspire to.

Honestly, it's not that big. (And I should explain how I do it.) I use all isometric style workouts and a lot of Matt Furey's concepts. The biggest thing that helped me was doing muscle tightening exercises I do on my off nights. Basically, just tighten one muscle group and hold it for as long as you can and work your way down your body changing muscle groups. I usually do this while watching tv, laying in bed.

As for how I do the pushups. I can push out 100 pushups with no problem. I give myself a 2 minute breather and then go again. I take a longer break between some sets if I start getting dizzy. (Something about the change in focus really gets me sometimes.) But, I have been doing pushups multiple times weekly for 20+ years now. You just get used to it. And honestly, I often change up the pushups styles now depending on if I get bored by them. Hindu Pushups, Raised foot pushups, Handstand pushups (though I can only do 25 of these at the moment).

back when i trained kung-fu, our sifu would have us do stuff like that. things like holding the horse stance for x number of minutes while watching tv.

our coach has us do a bastardized form of handstand push-ups every now and then. it's a modified burpee using the wall that he calls "wall burpees". you stand with your back to the wall a couple of feet from it, squat down, place your hands on the mat at regular push-up width, then mule kick up so that your toes are on the wall. it's not a complete vertical handstand. there's a bit of an angle. you do a set of push-ups, then walk yourself down the length of the wall on your hands.

they're not really hard, but it takes doing it a few times to get used to the blood rushing to your head.

i think i'm going to try to bump mine up incrementally. like add another 20 per night every couple of days or every week. 10 sets of 100 is pretty inspiring.

some exercises just don't come naturally for some people. my wife can bench press her body weight for several reps, but she can't do a single "real" push-up; which is weird since a push-up amounts to only about 60% or so of your body weight. the mechanics between the two exercises are VERY similar, but obviously there are distinct differences that might make one easier for certain people than others.

Because of my wieght and back problems it hurts my lower back to do a standard military push up.

Now, if I were doing sissy-girlie push-ups where it's my knees on the ground instead of my toes ... probably about 30.
