Just read the first four issues of Zipper. It is a title from IDW written by Tom Waltz, art by Casey Maloney, inks by Stacie Ponder (first issue) and Marc Rueda (the following issues), colors by Dusty Yee.
I have to say up front that until a couple of years ago I read mostly Marvel and Dc. I always sample some things but never really ventured far from regular superheroes stuff from the big two. It maybe because I buy so much that I usually don’t have any money left to try new things. In the last three months every time I drop a book I have been picking up something that isn’t my normal book. So when I read Toms post about Zipper I thought it sounded good and went in search of it.
Well after reading the first four issues I have to say I am hooked. The story moved so well. The action starts on the first page and continues through out the whole issue. The main character Denizen Xeng Ral is from an alien world unlike ours. On his world there is a single collective society were everyone is given a job (he is a soldier) and that is the only thing they do. Once the main character starts thinking for him self he is labeled a criminal and is set to be reconditioned. Instead he flees his world with a special suit. He arrives on earth where his adventures begin. His suit helps him translate English but not very well. This sets up the fun dialog that will continue through out the four issues. Some things just don’t translate well. Soon Xeng Ral meets a drug dealer named Ronnie J who after a fight with some other drug dealers becomes Xengs friend on the run. Ronnie J gives Xeng the name Zipper because of what the suit looks like and the fact that Ronnie can’t pronounce his name. There is a preacher named Dr. Foster H Deveroux who is thinks we are not alone. He will be a main baddy down the road. After fleeing his home world there are soldiers sent to bring Zipper back. Which are introduced in the later issues. There is a police detective that also befriends Zipper and goes on the run with him and Ronnie J.
The writing was top notch on this. Story flows very nicely and the dialog is believable. Some really funny stuff when Zipper is trying to talk to Ronnie J and others. You can tell this is a well thought out series and knows where it is going.
The art is just perfect I was very impressed by Casey Maloney work. There was so much detail and great backgrounds. The expressions on the characters faces look real and fit the moment. I love the Zipper costume design.
The inking changes from the first issue to the preceding issues are barely noticed. Both inkers are great.
The coloring reminds me of Crossgen comics with the better paper and the moody shades. It fits the art very nicely.
The first issue cover is by Adriano Loyola and is the my favorite of the four. I love the eyes they seem to be popping off the cover.
I have to say I was very happy with this book and wish more people would pick this up. It was as good or better than a lot of the main stream stuff out today. Great job to all and thanks for a really interesting and fun book. Now hurry up with issue 5 because I have to see what happens.
