It seems like everyday at work I doodle the exact same thing. A cube, weird big eyed originals, and Spider-man's mask. After I drew him today it got me thinking. It'd be really fun to see all our interpretations of one of our industry's biggest icons. From the crude drawings from us who can't draw (like myself) to all of the amazing artists we have here at the board. Don't be afraid, just post away with whatever you skill you have. This could just be a neat (digital) collection from our neck of the woods. And taking a page from Michel Gondry, don't even reference a picture, just draw him how you see him in your mind's eye. I can't wait to see the results, and of course I'll kick it off.

I think this would look much better in black and white than it does in color. The green/brown tends to wash out the web-lines.

The first two are pencils darkened in Photoshop. The third I actually inked.

I don't know much. Rich was posting on a CBR board in a random thread about some rumors he was hearing. Someone else posted a picture they saw that they claimed was Marvel concept art for a redesigned Scarlet Spider (somewhat similar to the KillingYouGuy's design). Weirdly, I looked for the posts again and it seems like they're deleted now. It's probably just me not looking in the right place though.

I used to crosshatch the hell out of all my work, and I still do if I'm just doing pencils, but I haven't yet gotten comfortable with inking that much detail, which is why my inked work's a lot simpler.

I'm really happy that everyone seems to think this thread is as cool as I do. When I had the idea at work I honestly thought I was a genius for a second, but then I had fears that no one would actually post in it.

Since several of you have requested it, I think I will have more in the future. I don't think every week, because I don't want to kill the threads prematurely. Maybe every two weeks? I already have the next character in mind, and no it's not Galactus cock, but I do think it'll be just as popular as this one.

I apologize for the gluttony of posting three, but its hard to choose between your babies. I literaly draw Spidey all the time, so I have plenty lying around.

The first two are pencils darkened in Photoshop. The third I actually inked.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3124/2348006591_46846a40a6_b.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2201/2348004363_9a0fcc6433_b.jpg

(Just noticed I didn't finish that hand  )

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3076/2348840694_2ede1d6cab_b.jpg

Like I said, this was (hastily and poorly) inked. I'm more of a penciler than an inker. It also happens to be my redesign of the Scarlet Spider costume (you, know for when he comes back... again:  ). It also kind of looks like Iron Spidey.

Play with Levels in Photoshop instead.

Move the white slider toward the left until the grays in the background are gone, move the black slider to the right until your primary blacks are dark enough, and then move the gray slider toward the right to bump up the strength of your thin pencil/ink lines.

Yeah that's what I did for the first two. But they had a lot of faint lines (I use a .5 mech pencil) that I did not want to lose so I didn't darken them too much. I had the same problem with the featured drawing in my Deviant Art page (link in my sig). So much so that I had to cut the werewolf out and adjust it separately from the skeletons.

Also, I like to practice inking, since its a valuable skill. I don't trust my pencils. Frank Quitely I am not.

Thom, you are a classy man. Remind us to send you our eight page preview for our new project when it's finished. Then again, it should be done by NYCC, so circumstances allowing, KillingYouGuy and I can give it to you at your panel.

Sweet! You'll be able to find me most of the time at the con either at the Little Foot or Markosia booth, so even if you can't make it to the panel, we can meet up (not even taking after con festivities into account here).

I'll do a signing of Awakening at Archaia's booth with Nick and Alex (first time Team Awakeing is at a con together), and am still trying to figure out if Image and Zenescope signings can happen as well.

Willow Creek #1 is finally ready for print with Medors having recovered from his surgery and rocking the art again. That issue should be available at NYCC and CB and I will pimp it like crazy, anyway. My best lettering to date can be found between the covers (though it'll get even better when I switch fonts - currently designing a font based on Moreno's handwriting).

Anyway, it'll be an awesome show. Just don't ask me to sketch anything. I'm way too rusty. ;)

I'm definitely open to the idea of doing a poll, because well...I'm not a dictator. I do have a few I'd like to throw out there first though. The only reason I oppose the poll just a bit, is it gives you guys an idea of what to have ready. I kind of like the idea of springing it out of no where. But definitely expect some weeks where we'll have polls, and I'm also open to suggestions by private message, because I'm sure people have some great ones already.

Also I think you guys were right with it being weekly. So, Thursdays are officially "draw character from the neck up" day (kinda like how Tuesdays are partial to time travel and Fridays are bombarded by weird iimages).

Yeah, I agree that the surprise factor is very cool. This is pretty damn awesome.

Speaking of awesome - my previous entry as "digitally inked" (if I may) by Thomas Mauer:

[Edit: That's right, ladies! I just drew a picture of an alternate future spider-man... posted it on a comic book message board... and then made an empire strikes back reference to rib a British guy! Who wants first dibs?]

Thom, how long did it take you to do this? It looks great.

Two minutes from opening to saving. It's just the Levels tool (CTRL+L). I sent DoctorSpaceman a screenshot of the settings I used so he has a point of reference when he wants to try it for himself.

If you have inks or pencils, convert to grayscale and then use Levels. When you move the black/white/gray sliders, you just play by ear. The gray slider is particularly helpful on inks because it bumps midtones to black. It's the fastest way of increasing line strength of thin lines and getting deep blacks in large spotted areas.
