Drax is one of those characters that I would actually want/prefer the modern
version of (from the Annihilation series)

I think the tattoos would help make for a visually stunning piece

"I think the tattoos would help make for a visually stunning piece"

Agreed. Though the color contrast of the purple and green of the "previous" Drax would look cool as well. Besides, considering that RB claims (or insinuates) to lack knowledge of more-current characters (you were teasing about not knowing who X-23 is, right Randy??), somehow I doubt that IF a Drax is done, it will be the current incarnation.

For me, as I feel that the two versions are all-but different characters, I'd happily find room (budgetarily and display space) for BOTH!

I think "old Drax" would look better w/ the 70s Captain Marvel & Thanos & Death--especially if there's Gamora & Moondragon to go with!

Assuming bust (my preference) . . . would go better with Adam Warlock as well (which I believe is "Classic" version). IF Drax is to be done, and IF I had to choose between the two, I'd lean towards "old Drax" due to display options. Could also depend on whether there are "Annihilation" versions of other characters in the offing, be it Starlord (would look COOL!!) and . . .

As to Gamora & Moondragon . . . I think "we" may have already received a "no" from RB on Moondragon, but I'd love to see Gamora done, either "Infinity Watch" version or more current version - if I had to choose there, I'd go current (and that's coming from one of those Silver Age lobbyists!). Heck - I'd even go for a FS "current" Gamora to put with the FS Nova, if one of the Novas (be it museum pose or "flying") is of like time period.

Yeah, RB said "not this phase," but it never hurts to demonstrate that a character has a following or that a sculpt would be a highly desirable addition to someone's collection!

the current phase is such a sausage-fest so far that i like to keep an oar in the water at least for more ladies ....

Yeah! I'm praying for this cosmic display too, and i LOVE the green/purple+cape costume.
But by now only possibilities of a bust , if there will be a Phase 5 it will come FS for sure due to the great seller the bust was. :)

I actually never took to the Marvel Cosmic characters until I picked up the original Annihilation series in hardback; since then, I've taken an interest in learning some of the current players' backgrounds and hence would like to complement my current Bowen "cosmic" collection with a few (already named).

As to Gamora . . . I will say that a couple current Nova covers featuring her were . . . well . . . required further investigation. Haven't read the current Annihilation series and related titles yet (I'm backlogging them until they're all out, so I can read them one after the other without pause), but from what little I've gleaned thus far of Gamora, she's probably the closest thing to one of my other fav's - Dejah Thoris - that a modern day Marvel character comes - otherworldly breathtaking beauty and deceptively deadly.

You're a John Carter fan too, right?

I am a HUGE fan of the Annihilation stuff...HUGE!!!!!
But for Annihilus...it has got to be old school for me. The redesign on him just
did not have the same impact on me ...it made sense to look more bug-like
but I like the old school mecha-bug design.

BUT...with characters like Nova, Drax, Gamora, Super Skrull, Ronan, Firelord,

the old scool ones too...but not as much as the new Annihilation designs

Randy - I/we know you've got your hands full as it is getting Phase IV up and running, but please consider picking up a John Carter/Barsoom line. I don't know anything about the licensing aspect, but I gotta believe (based on what I've read) that it's gotta be more hassle-free than what you've experienced with Marvel.

And while you're laying the groundwork for your new line, go ahead and do a current Gamora. And Grim Reaper. And Red Ghost. And Red Guardian. What the hell . . . throw in a Radioactive Man in between. Oh yeah . . . I'll take most of what you're already working on too!

Sorry- I'd rather not say.

There's a disturbing trend happening lately. Whenever I announce that I'm not releasing a particular sculpt this phase, that seems to be a green light for unauthorized producers to create their own, and they go into production.

There are a ton of characters for this phase. We may not get to all of them, but we'll get there eventually.

Good thing these kits range from $30-70 and that's not counting painting...making them very costly yo add to a collection.

i.e.--I can neither put together a kit,nor paint one. :(

Never met you, don’t know you, so please don’t take my reply as a personal attack at all.

I love the interaction just as much as anyone else. This is why I buy Moore/Bowen statues and nothing else. They care about the fans. So, yes RB tells us what is coming out to help please the fans, and/or to help build up excitement for the coming phases.

If I didn’t know what was coming out from BD I would probably start buying something else. But instead, since I have an idea of what is coming out in the next several months I begin to horde my money in anticipation.

RB gets about $1,500+ of my money every year. That may seem like small change compared to some, but its pretty much well over half of my discretionary money. And the reason why BD gets so much of it is because I am eagerly waiting for the next statue to post and I always hope that it’s the one that I want.

And, between you and me, the 'duh' comment could have been stated a bit differently.

Hi again,

when the modern Ms. Marvel statue is painted, can her black costume have a sort of blue cast/undertone, in the way that highlights on black used to be shown as blue? I don't mean artificial "highlights" in blue paint, but a blue-black that's darker & richer than the straight blue on the retro version's costume.

thanks,

HEARTBREAK! :brkheart::Panic:

"iffy"--oh no! Check out the "Who should come next from the Avengers" thread on SF--Mockingbird's right on top. She's one of the few female Avengers; a compelling [if somewhat sidelined] character who features really prominently in fan-favorite Hawkeye's world; devoted collectors would love to complete their WAC displays; and she'd appear to be a major player in this year's gigantic "Secret Invasion" event--to say nothing of just being a hot Marvel heroine who's not a mutant, which are almost always snapped up fast!

Weren't Hellcat & Tigra successful mbs? We need more blondes who can kick ass! Since the Ms. Marvel fs is so AWESOME, if it's a matter of time/energy I say either saw it off for the mb or give us a Mockingbird mb instead & let folks love the fs statue! Add a mask & sleeves, pull back the hair, give her a coupla clubs--it could work!

Please, oh please!

And thanks for answering!

The only place that I knew of was a company called Lunar Models, who were producing dinosaurs, and a few other non-figural items. I was hired to sculpt a Morlock, (from the George Pal film The Time Machine). I was working at other jobs at the time (pumping gas, gopher for a bucket making company, asbestos removal guys etc.). It wasn't long before I learned how to make my own molds and produce my own kits. I don't like being an employee, and I also like- not feeling like I'm working.

In my youth,I was always the kid selling lemonade on the street corner, peddling newspapers, or putting on and organizing high-school dances to make extra money. My dad was self employed, and it was always my dream to be my own boss.

It turns out that being the boss can sometimes suck, big-time, and I don't get to sculpt nearly as much as I'd like. That's why Bowen Designs as a company has stayed small. I've found that the bigger we get, the less fun I have.

And, yes- I did get grief from my family. My father always told me that there was no future in art. He always recommended that I become a federal employee, or something with good health and retirement benefits. In a way he was right. I'm one of the lucky few who've "made it". My wife also had her doubts. In fact, I had to prove it to her on paper how this career choice was worth it to quit her job. She's now a believer. She's always supported me personally, but it took a while to convince her to come on board with BD.

Any chance we might see Diablo soon?

if you haven't picked a sculptor for him yet I think Troyboy would be a good choice. His Ringmaster has some of the same characteristics which would work on Diablo.

Oh, and any chance of a John Byrne-style Thing statue?

At what point does a scuplt pass the point of no return, where no sculpting tweaks can be done???

If a picture is up for order on the BD site. Is that the point???

How about paint??? At what point can changes be made??

I was blown away by Troy's Man-Ape and Ringmaster. He put a lot of fun into the characters and had some really cool ideas for the bases. I figured the gorilla skulls sold you on Man-Ape.

That is encouraging news about the Byrne-style Thing. After Kirby I think Byrne had the greatest artistic impact on the Fantastic Four. And his version of The Thing respected the original look while adding his own touch.

yes- I sculpted a monument for my hometown (Pomeroy Washington). This is a life-size statue. It's based on a Union soldier from the Civil war that had pioneered in that area. It's sits on the front lawn of the city courthouse.

Good questions today: refreshing :)

Yes- sometimes I use epoxy putty instead of Super Sculpey. It's because sometimes I need to use a material that does not require heat to set-up, in order to save the surface underneath.

The angle of the photo from my studio only shows the BD stuff. I don't enjoy having my own stuff around me, (because I now see all the mistakes). I keep them close at hand as reference, to try and keep all the sizes and scale consistent while sculpting.

A few questions:
1. Who are the top five FSers you'd like to get to before closing things out on the Marvel line?
2. Any plans on going after and movie or TV licenses? If so, which ones?
3. Have you thought about expanding BD beyond 1:7/1:8 resin statues and busts to either a larger scale, mixed media, original designs, or something else?
4. With companies like DST and Master Replicas out of the picture, do you see the industry contracting or expanding?
5. What are some of the things you'd like to accomplish in the next 5 years (company or non-company related).

Randy, I know writers get " writers block". Do you ever get "sculpters block?" If so, what do you do to get out of it and move on?

1) Yes, I do get sculptors block. There are times when all I want to do is watch a movie with my family, ride my motorcycles,go to the shooting range, paint, or do anything but sculpt. The only really fun part of the sculpt (for me) is the roughing-in period. The rest is just work.

2) When I get stuck, the best thing to do is walk away and start another sculpture. When I come back to the "stuck" sculpture, I find I have a fresh set of eyes to see the problems.

After an artist has looked at their work for an extended period, an amazing thing happens: The human brain "corrects" the problems.

Not in reality, but in the minds perception of the work. That's why it's much easier for someone who's never seen the sculpt to look at it- and pick out all the problems with a particular subject. It's why we do "sneak peeks". Because you guys are looking with a fresher set of eyes.

Have you put any more thought into converting the original bronzes into regular sculpts? Maybe as a cc exclusive? Now that the faux bronzes are coming, couldn't you do this too?

Nice to get a new action Spidey , but please don't put him on top of Water towers, roffs or so big structures that make him hard to display facing his enemies. I like the "relaxed" action poses , like black Panther or Sabretooth.
U know, action but not "super action/moving"

It would be neat if you could somehow incorporate elements of the Sinister Six into the base. Some imprints of Doc Ock's claws, Kraven's net, Sandman's sand, a feather from Vulture, shards of a Green Goblin pumpkin bomb and maybe some scorch marks from Electro.

It would look great surrounded by all of Spidey's villains as statues.

The original sculpt is molded here in the states. copies are made, and a resin master is sent to the facotry for their molds. It would be unwise to ship an original directly to the factory.

Also, the original is usually damaged in the initial mold process.

Any and every character has the potential to be a cool sculpt. There's a saying in film work that could apply here: There's no such thing as small roles, only small actors (or something like that). Meaning; it should not matter what the character is, it's all in the execution.

Because you guys are looking with a fresher set of eyes.Makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing!

Spawny,
Where did you get that kit from? Think that would be a great BD project.

Hey Toast,

I had it commissioned it might just be a bit to big for randy to put out.

You do what we architects do. After looking at your design for a extended period of time you loose a sense objectivity. In the office we critic each others work with a fesh set of eyes. This one of the reasons I'm so drawn to your product, you let others have a little input into the project.:D

Hey Randy! This is what i was trying to get at yesterday, its a cheese drawing but im sure you will know what i mean, I used Your Idea from the Hawkeye Statue BASE and put it on this Spiderman's and i used somewhat of the Beast pose for spidey !:scared:

Here are the Items listed thats on the BASE:
Doc Ocks Arm
a Little Lizard
A Daily Bugle Paper with the Rhino and Shocker on it
Mysterio's Mirrior Cube
Green goblins Pumpkin grenade
Sand all around the base from sandman
the Vultures feathers
And my fav is a camera to take pictures of all the action

So this is what i came with that had a solid base! Not the best drawing but Its an Idea! thats all!!!!!! Thanks Randy! for taking the time to hear and see everybody opinion!

Randy, where did the Firelord mini-bust go that was on the sneek peek page? Is it being redone?

We recently sent the factory sample in for final approval. We've been getting some flak on it, so it may end up being tweaked.

Randy, will Mephisto be up for sale soon? Is that piece very heavy since the base is all resin right? Thanks.

That's garbage that you're getting flak. I like the Firelord sculpt BECAUSE it doesn't look like everything else. The face sculpt makes him look more realistic. I like how his musculature is more on the wiry side. Nice to see a change from the standard cookie-cutter comic book anatomy. I'd buy it as it is.
