I just watched last Sunday's episode, and I was glad to see that it was actually good. It was pretty good writing, some good hearty gags, a message that was pretty relevant, and a spoof on Cheaters.
So, for all those times that I've said that the Simpsons should have ended years ago, I take it back if they continue with this kind of quality--that being better than the past 4-5 years, but still not as good as in its prime. But I'll take this.

I am one of the select few that has enjoyed most of the latter seasons. And yes, it was a great episode.

Though I haven't been watching lately, I'm really glad to hear this.

The Bart/Lisa stuff was weeeeeak, but the Homer/Marge stuff was as good as it's been in a long time.

Hmm. I have this on my DVR but haven't watched it yet (it usually take me a while to get motivated to watch a new Simpsons). I'll check it out tonight! Yay!

Sometimes they play better in syndication, too. But thennnnnn... sometimes the sheer ratio of bad seasons to good makes you forget just how great seasons 2 - 8 were.

Yeah, it was fun.
But nowhere near as fun as the Departed spoof from a few weeks ago.
Agreed. Season 18 was quite good also. 3-8 are beyond awesome. 9 and 10 still have many funny eps. But with eleven it went downhill, imo partly because of guest stars for guest stars sake. 14 or so was allready back to better times and it his improved again sincem, but they dont quite returned yet to older days, and might never again, but times change and so do the simpsons...

Agreed. I must not analyze them close enough b/c I never seem to have any problems with episodes. I enjoy it anytime I have time to watch it.

I think there was a time when one of the Executive Producers had left, and in those years, there were some truly horrible episodes, usually focusing almost solely on Homer getting some sort of new job, and act like a complete and utter imbecile with no redeeming qualities (I've heard of these seasons referred to as the "Jerk Homer" years). Then said producer returned, and in the last several seasons the Simpsons has maintained a pretty level consistency of quality.

Meh. There were good and bad episodes in all the seasons. Maybe there were some seasons with more bad than good, but even the bad ones were better than most other things on television. Even if you didn't like the "main" plot, there was a lot of stuff going on that was funny too.

I wanna say it was around when (I believe) Bill Odenkirk and a bunch of guys went to go do Futurama.
I definitely think there was a time where Futurama was a waaay better show.

Definitely. The one producer I'm thinking of, though, just took a sabbatical of sorts, if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I read his interview in the Onion AV Club or whatever. :)

I noticed Odenkirk was back on last Sunday's episode. Not sure if that's been true for a while or not.

I did too, and I was wondering the same thing.
Especially since that episode seemed like a decent step-up from a lot of newer episodes.

If you ignore the last five years or so.

I was the opposite. I thought the Marge/Homer stuff was too silly, but the Bart/Lisa story started off with some honest stuff about kids, then had the delightful idea of Nelson the Detective.

Well, if you consider how long the show has been airing, I think it still has its moments. But I don't find myself excited everytime a new episode starts anymore.
Maybe its that the novelty wore off, and the show itself has retained its qualty but I just grew a little tired of it...I really don't know...
I feel the same about South Park, btw.

Really, all the Simpsons seasons suck. It really lost it's edge after it left The Tracy Ullman Show. After that every single episode was tired, stale and derivative.

For me, the feeling for South Park went away very quickly.

I finally got around to watching the episode and I have to agree that it was a great episode. If they can make more episodes like this, I might actually feel bad if I miss an episode :)
