View Full Version : Statues vs Mini-Busts...you decide.

Which do you prefer?

I prefer mini-busts because of a few reasons.

First, the cost. I can buy 3-4 mini-busts for the price of one statue. $40-$75 really doesn't put that bad a dent in my wallet as opposed to $130-200 for a statue.

Secondly, the variety the mini-bust line provides. I like that Bowen doesn't just produce the big name characters, the sure sellers. And at the cost of a mini-bust I don't mind buying the lesser known characters.

Thirdly, they take up less space.

But I have to admit that statues though really WOW! I always get compliments on my Chrome Silver Surfer that I have displayed in my living room. Thor is much more majestic as a statue. Hulk is just that more impressive.

Statues (FS).It seemed like I was duplicating alot of characters and didnt make sense to have both. Plus I was a completist through phase 2 and there was just too many mini-busts for me. Not really into the variety anymore just my childhood favorites. I did keep my Deadpool mini busts though!!!

I buy both but I don't buy everything. When I consider buying I go by my checklist:

1) Avengers member or villian
2) Avenger associate characters such as Daredevil, Spiderman and Fantastic Four and their villians most commonly associated with them
3) Character pieces that are just too awesome not to buy such as Man Thing or Deadpool

For the most part I don't buy X related pieces.

When I get my display back up I hope to organize them in groups of related characters and will incorportate statues with busts and also hope to use a matching comic book on a stand to completment the display.

Cost and space aren't really issues for me. Cost because I don't buy everything and space because I am moving into a new home this year and the basement is pretty much being designed around the display. I'll also have a fair sized storage room for the empty boxes. I'll post pictures once everything is set up.

I am interested in seeing the pictures of your new place Grumpy because I am trying to decide on how to display my statues in the new room I am making. It is only about 10 feet square and there is not much space. Still I prefer Full Size Statues for their dominating presence / effect. I also like busts very much as well and when they are displayed they way I prefer --uncluttered -- they are very beautiful. Like the idea of a framed related picture/painting behind both busts and statues. Two narrow beam sidelights or something on the pieces. Fun to experiment with lighting. Wonderful hobby!

I have both but I prefer the MB's because they're cheaper and easier to display. Also I don't want to spend big bucks on a FS of a character that I don't care about.

I PREFER mini-bust for many of the reason already listed, BUT..........a nice full size statue is nice every once and awhile.

I collect both FS and MB. The MB are easier to display and much cheaper. However, I can't pass up the FS when they come out. I only collect X-men MB and FS and any closely related like Alpha flight.
Hope there are no X related for awhile. have six Wolverine FS coming soon.

i use to have all the mini-busts from the first series, before the renewal of the marvel license....but after a long time on consideration i sold all my mini-busts and focused on statues only...for two reasons:

1-statues provide the full figure of the marvel characters, which to me makes the characters looks better and they are posable with other statues. To me a mini-bust seems like an incomplete piece of the characters...lol, i dont know

2- no room for both, had to decide between on or the other and only focus on my favorite characters. Most of my statues are boxed, because I have no room to display them yet

I get both, but as far as preference goes, it's FS all the way for me. For example, the Mr. Sinister bust is very striking and I love it, but a FS would be so much better. Then the full length of his lace cape would be present instead of just a small piece and the figure would be that much more striking. I also agree with Pharoah's comment about the figure feeling incomplete as only a bust. A bust is a nice supplement to a FS of the same character, but for a bust to be the sole representation of a character isn't enough. Just my opinion.

I prefer the MBs, because that is what I started with. There is also more variety. I do have a couple of FSs I couldn't resist, though...

Depends on the character. 80% of the time - MB's for space and $.

Hey Folks! First post on this forum! Jus' migrated over from statue forum.

I have both MB and FS, however, 90% of my collection are MB...I am more selective about FS due to space and price issues. However, that doesn't mean I'm settling for MB...it's just a logistics issue...I enjoy the MB just as much as the FS.

I prefer busts as it is my best way to be able to eventually work toward collecting the whole Marvel Universe! (OK, it is a goal. Someone told me I needed a hobby. :) )

I like the occasional FS for special treatment of a favorite character or as in the case of Juggernaut, just an all around great sculpt.

I used to like the Bowen Mini-Statue line as I could get FS sculpts that did not take up a huge amount of space.

I REEEAALLLY like FS. . . but dEnny hits the nail on the head: price. I do collect both, and because of the cost of FS pieces, I have to limit them to my core favorite characters. MB's make it much more affordable, and I can admit I enjoy statues without legs. :)

FS. THings with legs are always better.

I prefer busts, because the character selection is better, they're easier to display in a limited amount of space, they're less expensive to purchase and they're produced faster than the full size pieces are.

Now if I had all the money in the world and a house with plenty of room ... I would go for FS pieces ... but unfortunately I'm a victim of my circumstances.

I'm also an impatient little cuss ... but we won't go into that. :D

I mainly collect FS pieces, but both are nice. I'm selective in the pieces I choose, so space isn't a huge concern for me.

FS all the way for me. Only way i'll get a bust is if a certain character that I really like was only busted

I mostly stick with FSs for the Marvel icons (and their arch enemies) but I do prefer MBs because:
- they take up less shelf space so more characters can be displayed.
- they're more affordable so I can buy more characters.
- the variety of characters that can be produced by BD with viable sales potential. C'mon how strong a demand can there be for FS's of the Mole Man, the Prowler, Stingray, Tiger Shark (to name a few)? While these characters have a tight fan base, FS's of them wouldn't sell out like Doom, Magneto, or the Juggernaut. The MB option gives them to us.

For all of the right practical reasons (cost, space, not wanting to lose all human contact w/ anyone NOT into comics or BD), I'd vote MB's, since the Polaris mb was my "gateway piece."
But the greater artistic achievement possible in the fs (look at that Medusa! the Black Knight!) statues have won me over to include them as well.
First & foremost it's about the character & then whether or not I love the sculpt enough to own it. For example, while I'm a big, big fan of ROGUE, i feel her sculptures haven't done justice to the character, so I've bought neither the mb nor the fs (got my fingers crossed for a Museum fs, though). I'm equally psyched for the Northstar/Aurora mb 2-pack and the Ms. Marvel fs.

I love the statues! I would rather buy a statue than a mini bust unless I am really into that character (and there is no fs statue). Ex..Psylocke, Mystique, Tigra, Modern Wasp....

Cheaper
Easier to display
Greater variety of characters

Order of preference for me is Sculpted by Randy Bowen (which explains my purchase of Zombie), then character - Spider-Man and his rogues are where my heart lies so I look forward to seeing the Sinister Six completed.

Full size for me. I only own the modern Punisher mini-bust by Bowen. Love the character and the look of the bust with that chrome base. The only other busts I own are the astonishing X-MEN busts by diamond select. I think that is a total of @ 7 busts. The rest of my collection is all FS pieces. I have about 26 FS statues. I just love the WOW factor of them. IMHO they can't be beat.

FS is where it's at.

My new Abomination statue agrees.

It's unbelievable.

I cut my teeth on Mini-busts, but eventually switched to FS for a couple of reasons.

The biggest reason was a sacrifice of sorts. I decided that I did not have the space or budget to collect all the characters I liked. Room simply began to run out. So, I made a compromise with myself. I would buy the larger and more expensive FS pieces, just buy fewer and concentrate on specific characters, namely Hulk (related allies/villians) and the Marvel Monsters.

Obviously, the mini-bust line is more expansive and varied, plus a lot cheaper, but buying FS pieces with character restrictions, has worked well for me. The only backfire may come this Summer when several Hulks are released all at once.

That said, I did keep all my Hulk mini-busts and the first Captain America MB, which is a personal favorite.

Mini Busts-

You can fit more in your home and there is never the problem common in FS collections with Museum/Action Poses.
