Not so much tired of Ferrell, but tired of the studio recycling the same formula over, and over again.
Also, unlike his last few movies which were all PG-13, Semi-Pro is rated a hard R. It's way raunchier than his previous comedies.

wait, how is being #1 at the box office mean america is tired of him?

03-01-2008, 06:45 AM
I think it's because I think we've seen Semi-pro before, but Ferrell was a race car driver. No, that's not right...he was an anchorman. No wait, he was a figure skater. No wait, he was a soccer coach.
It's pretty much him as the same character in all the movies. I think it's the same thing that got people tired of Chevy Chase. There was no variation of character. Any of the movies he did, it was almost pretty much the same character as Clark Gritzwald, and people did get tired of it and him, because it kinda made him a one note character. I think it kinda did that for Eddie Murphy as well, though he did get some variation, which has slowed his career death to kind of an embarassing pace.

It doesn't. The making less than $15 million over the weekend is what shows America is tired of him.

The economy's been in the crapper for close to a year, and plenty of movies have made plenty of money. I don't see how so many people could afford to see BLADES OF GLORY a year ago, but can't afford to see SEMI-PRO now.

I'm sure somebody asks this dumb question every time, but I just have to know: how can you possibly know how much money something made from 29 Feb to 2 Mar when it's only the morning of 1 Mar?

But there is a crucial difference; those movies were funny. And they looked funny. From everything I've seen via ads and previews, Semi-Pro was marinated in fail.

They are estimates based on pre-existing theater-going patterns that take into effect the average number of screens the film is showing on and the opening day average viewers per screen. It also takes into account time of year, leading economic indicators, and past performance of similar films. And they also open up a young goat and read the future in its entrails. After doing all that, they have a pretty good idea of what the movie will make.

That's probably true. The different movie/same character stuff is getting old. That's why I don't really have an interest in Vince Vaughan anymore.

Sounds to me like they can predict all this without even having — you know — a movie. You'd think if they were that good at it, everything would be a hit.

Just because the economy is bad, means Americans are gonna stop going out to eat or seeing movies. They will just put it on, like, the 5th Credit Card that they have. It's the American Way :)
And Semi-Pro is doing shit, because it didnt look funny and Ferrell isnt changing up his act enough. The guy needs to go back and do a couple movies like Stranger Than Fiction and give his "wacky, screwball, sports comedies" a rest.

If anything, it was really disappointing as a movie. Trailers made it seem like a raunchy comedy-fest, and when the movie was being funny, it was damn funny. But it fell into a trap that a lot of comedies do, shoehorn in a semi-serious sappy dramatic plot, and when those parts occurred, it really ground the movie to a halt. I'm looking at you Woody Harrelson.
Although:Patti LaBelle as Jackie Moon's mother was a nice touch.

Still not the point. Juno of all things had been making 10-15million a week for almost all of January. This just made 5 in the ass end of Feb with absolutely nothing going against it. No one cares anymore.

I reallly doubt Americans are tired of Will Ferrell. He's an A-list comedy star.
I think it's more that this wasn't a very compelling vehicle for him,
I remember people saying Adam Sandler was done after Lil' Nicky. Didn't quite turn out that way.
But hey, it wouldn't be Sunday without Bartelby making some broad, sweeping statement about the weekend box office! :)

First of all, there are no dinosaurs in the movie. There are killer birds called Diyatrima, and those were from quite a bit earlier, but I've seen no evangelical buzz for the movie. Remember, the time period it's set in is about 8,000 years before a lot of them believe the world was created. ;)
It's going to be a brainless movie for the 300 set, giving us cool CGI monsters and battle scenes.

It's going to be a brainless movie for the 300 set, giving us cool CGI monsters and battle scenes.
It's also a horrific compression of history. And that bugs me, but will no doubt delight a lot of creationists. Yes, it's fiction, but it's still lame and annoying to me.
Plus, for God's sake, it's Roland Emmerich. The guys movies are fucking awful. This ain't 300.

Independence Day was a magnificent celebration of man's triumph over evil bugs in spaceships, and I won't hear any Goddamn commie lies to the contrary!

I guess we're gonna pretend a lot of evangelicals aren't gonna hit that movie next weekend?
Do you base that on anything, though? If this were a movie that ultimately came down on the side of intelligent design/creationism, I could see that maybe being an assumption one could make; just being a dinosaur movie with faulty facts, however, doesn't suggest to me that people are going to run to it as a way to lend support to their beliefs.
I haven't really been paying attention, so they could be marketing it in some places as such a thing, but having grown up with evangelicals, I don't see them giving a shit one way or the other on the face of it.
There are actually quite a few movies beyond that one coming out next weekend, so it will be interesting to see if the box office gets reinvigorated. If Snow Angels is opening in your area, I highly encourage you to go see it.

Actually, Ray, I think this might be a great metaphor for our opposing views on foreign policy. :)

10,000 BC looks HORRIBLE. I feel like it's going to be the action movie of choice for the evangelical set, though.
Sorry, but the atheist in me is really annoyed by the way that thing is going to butcher history and science. Dinosaurs and sabretooth tigers? 12 thousand years ago? Riiiiiight...
I feel like the tag line should be "From the man who ruined Godzilla... History will weep."
I think it looks interesting. Pretty atypical for a big budget blockbuster.

GODDAMN COMMIE LIES! :furious:
Starship Troopers was a paranoid musing on a fascist America, dressed up with giant bugs.
Independence Day was beautiful.

But hey, it wouldn't be Sunday without Bartelby making some broad, sweeping statement about the weekend box office! :)
If you haven't figured it out it yet, "America officially tired of Will Ferrell" was meant to be hyperbole and not a completely academic assessment of the situation.

But please, tell me what I said. If you can do it in a snarky one liner, even better. :)
If you are only saying that it's not your type of film why did you bring in the 'evangelical set' into the discussion?

Yeah. He definitely needs a new act. Everything after Anchorman has gotten progressively worse.

He and his cohorts need to actually WRITE OUT THE ENTIRE SCRIPT of the ideas they come up with. It seems like they have an idea for a movie and then tell Will to just go balls to the walls and Will NEEDS editing otherwise he beats his jokes into the ground, then urinates on them, turns the jokes over a few more times and continues to pound on them until you forgot what was funny in the first place.

Me and the evangelicals don't exactly see eye to eye when it comes to movies. This movie would bug the shit out of me the whole time, whereas they'll probably love it.

Yup. And BLADES OF GLORY, while not quite as good as the rest, definitely had it's moments.
It seems like it's been kind of a rough winter for comedy. Am I forgetting some movie that did really well? This and WALK HARD both struggled this season, I know that much. Maybe these movies are just better suited for summer anymore.

I mean straight-up American sophomoric comedy of the Apatow/ Sandler/ Stiller/ Frat Pack variety. The kind that's powered by young male audiences. Doesn't seem like it was a good winter for the genre, especially after such a big summer last year.
Even on your list, though, only one of those flicks broke 100mil (though all three were successful overall). Doesn't seem like audiences were really into laughing that much this winter, period. The economy, maybe?

Well, if you're going to narrow it down that much, I think WALK HARD is the only movie released this winter prior to SEMI-PRO that fits your classification.

More like Fall, I think, but HEARTBREAK KID tanked pretty hard, too, and Ben Stiller's a pretty reliable Box Office guy. It seems like since SUPERBAD, it's been pretty rough going. Fred Claus did OK, but not great (certainly no ELF).
It just seems like the straight-up, meat and potatoes comedy has had a rough go of it, lately. I don't know if this is Ferrell-specific.
It'll be interesting seeing how SARAH MARSHALL, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, and DRILLBIT TAYLOR do this year, I'll say that much. I like these movies, so I'm obviously hopeful it turns around.

Sigh.
In this day and age, when huge numbers of people have decided to disregard scientific evidence and historical proof, I'm not a fan of anything that placates such an absurdist belief. It just annoys me.
