View Full Version : How often do you get a new cell phone?

Seriously?
Because I went in to get a new one today, and they asked me how long I had mine. I said almost three years, and you would think I had walked into the store and announced like to sodomize Korean infants while fellating a goat.

Maybe it was a Freudian slip and you actually DID say that...
I usually get a new one every 2 years when Verizon gives me my "New Every 2" credit towards a new phone.

I upgraded about a year ago after having my previous phone for about 2 years.
I wanted a picture phone, which is why I upgraded. But my 2 phones before that were not great (battery and texting issues) so I didn't keep them long.
You should've gotten a nice upgrade for having the same phone so long! =)

I love gadgets, but I've never seen the point in constanty updating your phone. My current does everything I need it too, why spend hundreds on another?
I've only had two cell phones since I first got one in 2001. I have no plans to get a new one anytime soon.
I had a normal contract kind of deal with Verizon I think for a few years. But I rarely used my phone, so it was a real rip-off. I've used Virgin pay-as-you-go for the last few years, and it's great.

My friend Adam gets a new one every three months or so. That's insane. And it always has to have a thousand different applications he will never use.
I just want
1)To be able to talk.
2) A camera
3)Texting
4)Tetris.

I have had 12 phones since 2001. I worked in the industry for most of that though so was able to get myself some good deal. I also know how to work customer service.
Since I got my pocket pc I have made them last longer. I had my last phone for 2 years and just got a Chinese iphone knock off to last me until this fall when there should be a much better selection of what I am looking for,.

I DLed a 24 game, that kills them when I need it (Which isn't that often, to be fair). Dunno if I have Tetris :)
I need it to work, I'd like a camera (Although I never use it), a way to get a normal sounding ringtone (Easy to do myself) and for it to not look really really ugly. No new phone will do any of that bar maybe the camera better than my current, so why upgrade? Hell, skip a few phones and you could get yourself one of those handheld PCs or something :)

I don't really like to talk on the phone. Most calls can be cut down to basic messages, but I feel like I am being rude if I don't have a minimum conversation. with a text I can get the point across without all those nicities. I can also do other wghile I text another person. talking on the phone take valuable concentration.

I've usually upgraded at the end of every contract but over the last two years, I broke my first Pocket PC phone so upgraded to the one I currently have. I have a further 6 months left on my current contract and may upgrade because this is acting up (it was bought second hand with no warrently). It still does all the stuff I need but there's a lot I'm missing but it depends how much it will cost for the new handset.

It's simply not plausible to me that you could more easily/quickly impart even simple information through a text message than simply calling.
Voice mail can cost more, and I don't see how it is any more efficient than texting.
Well, 1) you don't know that the person isn't there when you call. and 2) costs more? I'm not aware of a per usage vm fee.
Thinking on it, I make few if any cell to cell phone calls. Only time is when I'm trying to meet someone somewhere, a situation where texting just seems stupid.

If I'm trying to meet someone somewhere, it's usually in a noisy pub where a phonecall would usually end up being abandoned and a text sent.
If a friend texts me to arrange a meeting, that's stupid an I phone them back to make details that would have taken many texts and a whole lot longer than a damn phonecall.

I was thinking those usually come with free calls too. On contract anyway. PAYG and we're into different territory.
It can also be very expensive to call other networks, not so with texting.
I thought that was pretty much abolished by now? Used to be the case but I thought OFCOM put a stop to it. Personally haven't experienced it on contract since the 90s I reckon.
When I need to pass a quick message on, I can type it and send it before the person I was sending it to actually answered their phone. And I'm not a particuarly fast texter, since I like to type all proper like :)
If it's nothing important or anything, I'll send a text and depending on the content, can be quicker as you say. But if it's important, phone them and you know they've got the message.
Personally, I turn the voicemail you get after X rings off. I hate when I want to talk to someone, they don't answer and I get charged for that. Plus hearing your voicemail can cost money.

That's because our society pushes newer, better, more frequently. You should never be satisfied with what you have don't you know?
Plus the crap they sell nowadays isn't made to last.
My wife and I have had ours over 2 years, but are thinking of getting a new one because her phone isn't very good. The battery has broken already once, one of the buttons actually fell off, it doesn't work very well, the time will change erroneously, it won't pick up phone calls. Just a bad phone.
I like mine, but I wouldn't mind getting one that would allow me to access stuff for work. ;) See their marketing has worked...now I'm not satisfied.

YOu can either buy a phone outright and pay whenever you make a call.
or get a free phone and free calls paying a monthly line rental with a cmpany for a minimum period of 12 months which also subsides the cost of more expensive free phones available on contract.

Texting allows me to:
1) Send short messages while in meetings or during other activities like playing cards where talking would be more time consuming and/or distracting.
2) Confer with my ex-wife in writing about our son. Our relationship has devolved to this (talking is not such a good idea), and I'm not always at a computer to check for emails.
There are a lot of times where it can be annoying as well, but I view it as essential for the above reasons.

I'm on a family plan with rollover minutes and free calls to others in-network. We, in the plan, don't ever go over the minutes so the expense of talking isn't an issue. I get 200 texts/month for $5 which puts my overall monthly bill at $30. Expense really isn't an issue.
My carrier is AT&T if anyone cares...and their service has gone slightly downhill since they took over Cingular.

That sounds great. My plan costs me 5 Euros per month, I have to use up enough minutes for another 5 Euros, anyway, and get 100 text messages free. If I want to call the US from the cell phone, I will have to pay 1.49 Euros per minute, so to stay in touch, I definitely prefer to text if land line phones or Skype aren't an option. Usually happens before, during or after business meetings I need to be clued in on.

My wife and I both have cell phones. I think we get new ones once every two years. The last time she got hers I was pissed because they have her a free phone that she gave away. The thing was cool. You programmed in four phone numbers and that's all you could call. Being that I never use my cell phone that would've been perfect for me.
The phone I've had now for at least the last year is shit. I'm going to exchange it for a phone that's bump, shock, and water resistant.

Was it a little green thing?
If so that was the kids phone from LG. It also had Verizons GPS service for tracking kids.
I sold one of those to a father that bought for his teen daughter. He did not tell her he got it though and placed it in the trunk of her car.

Automatically? So this is something else than bluetooth connections where you have to do it manually? Or IR connections for that matter?
I don't remember what the technology is called, but it functions like a remote. In fact, cell phones in Japan can now be used as remote controls for televisions, cd players, etc.
When you meet someone, instead of manual imputing their contact information into your phone, all you have to do is line the phones up and they send each other information.
When I think about it, this technology is scary.
Reading this thread feels like I've gone back in time..
It is almost impossible for me to make/receive phone calls while at either of my two jobs. Text messaging and email are my only tools of communication with friends and family when I'm working.

Surely this feature has to be activated and there needs to be control over what content is acually sent? Unless you just align the phone and the entire contacts list is transferred which I can't believe. You've got to select a contact and allow the data to be transferred at least, sending a Vcard or similar to the other phone with the details and automatically entering the details.
Surely?
(from the description is still sounds like any bluetooth or IR system)

Sounds like IR. There has been a function on PDAs for years where you can beam your "business card" (which is your contact information) to another PDA. The terminology probably has started to vary over the years but it has to be the same premise.

Ah. That sounds like a pretty nifty feature actually. Nothing groundbreaking but a nice useful addition. Cola.

Annoying when they're not compatible between different makes.

Definitely. It would make getting phone numbers for a date less of a hassle since you wouldn't have to cut through bullshit fake numbers.

Or, if you're that way inclined and all it does take is lining the phones up, getting someone's number all stalker-ish like is a whole lot easier.

Only if I have to. The dumb fuck I work with just spent $350 for some stupid slide phone that he was excited about. I only want the free ones.
Heh. Probably the same one some dumb fuck I work with got. And yeah. I don't need one with a camera, mp3 player, internet and all that. I only need a phone to talk to people.

I don't even need that. I've mine in the unlikely event that someone else wants to text/talk to me. My current phone is about 2 or 3 years old and I'm in no rush to change it.

While me phone's camera is pretty crappy and I've never tried to use the internet with it (screen way too tiny), I do like the integrated walkman. It's a great iPod substitute. If I could get a phone next that only has the walkman feature and not the other crap, I'd go for it, but we'll see what they have on offer when my contract's up for renewal. :)

Since 2003 I've gone through about 5 new cell phones. Before that though I'd had the same phone for 4 years straight.
Keep in mind that one was some cheap-o "free" phone that broke after a month. Then another broke, then ANOTHER one just kinda died. Then I got a Razr (which was free) which got stolen, and now I'm on my second Razr.
Ugh...
i'd say every two years. i liked our old phone alot better.

I only upgrade when necessary, and usually when it's free.
Every three years or so.

I tend to update every two years, when I can renew my contract and get a deal on a subsidized phone. Right now I have the AT&T KRZR, which is a great little phone. Decent camera, and I don't have to carry my ipod on the train because it can take a memory card for mp3s. Never use it for internet tho, screen is too small to make it worth the monthly fee.

I have a company provided cell now, but I would usually wait until the phone stopped working. My last cell phone was a bad ass Nokia that held a 2 gig sd card and played mp3s for me. I still have it as my backup in case I ever need to change back to my own phone again. My wife cares even less than me with her phone. She got a new one a year ago and was happy to just have a camera phone. Her previous one lasted 3 years and I ended up giving it to my mom since her phone broke.
Do you have to pay extra for long distance minutes on a pay as you go phone? No, long distance is included (and is treated the same as a local call).
I take pictures of hot guys I see.
Unfortunately, this phone makes a Shutter sound when taking pictures. Thats annoying.Try covering the speaker with your thumb. That might cover up the sound unless your phone has multiple speakers.

Usually every 12 months, but my most recent contract is an 18 month one, so it's now likely to be after 18 months, but I am very happy with my choice.

My old one was an absolute piece of crap, I really like this one though.
