What exactly is the difference between it and an X-Men movie?

Well, I think the major difference is it won't feature/focus Prof X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Storm, Magneto, etc.

Most movies have a few characters. It's just that in this case you know their names :)

That's a good question.

I should say, though, that the increasingly ensemble nature is what suddenly has me interested. I like that it'll presumably feel pretty close to an X-Men movie and not be some one-off reimagining like, I dunno, Elektra or Catwoman. The continuity aspect seems kinda cool.

The focus is primarily on Wolverine's Origin.

I'm still eager for Magneto.

Is Wolverine going to be a lone protagonist and all the comic book characters will just like characters you see in regular movies except with comic book names, or is it actually going to be an ensemble cast type thing?

Cyclops not being in Wolverine makes him have more impact and better used than in X2 :)
