View Full Version : AOL's web browser sucks!

For some reason my work blocks everything online. I have no idea why, but I can't check my mail, my Myspace, Major League Baseball, the Bendis board, nothing. About the only site which, bizarrely, isn't blocked is Youtube.
But, a back door, and the way I get online, is through signing on AOL, which evades their web blockers. It's nice to have the internet, but the browser sucks so bad it drives me crazy.
It freezes, it takes forever to load, it loads half-pages and just stops dead, it's all around terrible. If it was dial-up I'd probably just slit my throat.
Anyway, just thought you should know the horrors I go through just to read all your crap!

On the plus side, I didn't start a thread about the ghost of Hitler in a jar.

Anyone remember the old Wizard area on AOL back in the late 90's? Used to chat with Colleen Doran and Drew Hayes all the time.

How does AOL get away with being the number one internet provider? Is it because of name recognition? It surely can't be because they have such awesome service.

In somewhat related news..
AOL is used on this computer by other users. AOL just released a new version which was installed on this PC. And now, AOL has integrated itself into my precious Firefox, making AOL's search function as the default, replacing Google. And I cannot get rid of these new settings.

Once AOL is on a computer, it doesn't like to leave.

Type about:config in the address bar.
Edit browser.search.defaultenginename to be "Google" and browser.search.defaulturl to be "http://www.google.com/search?lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=". I had that same thing happen once with Yahoo, and that should reset everything.

I used to use AOL exclusively for years, just for their chat rooms. I met a lot of great friends from them.
I think I like message boards better than chat rooms now, though.
