View Full Version : Weird Pibb story
A couple of days ago I made my weekly Pibb pick-up at a local gas station. as i've mentioned before, Pibb Extra is extremely hard to find in South Florida and I have to have them special ordered by Mobil. They always order me a nice big tray of 24 drinks. After that I went to the Burger King--I ordered a chicken sandwich so no posts about how i'm cheating on my cholesterol!-- Anyway, as i pulled up to the window with my tray of drinks sitting in the pasenger seat, the cashier looked over and said "Hey! Let me get one of those." At first i was thinking "who the hell is she talking too?" So I looked right at her and said "wha?" It was an older lady about 50-60 years old--a real cute grandma type. "I was just wondering what those taste like". My first instinct was very basic...maybe a little primeval... i was thinking "what nerve! There is no way on Earth i'm sharing my drinks with you lady--do you KNOW how hard these are to get!? You can have one of these Pibbs when you pry it from my cold, dead hand". But, gosh..she really was a sweet old grandma and it was 10:00 Pm... she'd probably been working all day and old ladies can get delirious after standing for 8 hours. I started feeling guilty...I had 24...if i give her one....i still have 23--that's a lot! i started sweating...the pressure was unbearable. so i threw a Pibb bottle at her head. Okay, i'm just kidding...i gave the lady a Pibb.

You can't get Pibb in Florida? Isn't there a major Coca Cola bottling plant in GA?
Glad you gave the old lady one. And I agree that she should have given you some fries though!

That is very awkward.
Pibb is pretty hard to find for me (Upstate New York) but fortunately they have it at the movie theater that I work at. And it is delicious.
Nope. no fries. No nothin'.
Sweet old grandma...

Nice to share the Pibb Greg. Hey - does anyone know if you can buy it anywhere in the midwest - like the Michigan area?
P.S. Stan on "American Dad" loves his Pibb too!

WHAT!?! I gotta see this. Tell me what "American Dad" is! Is it a TV show?
You should be able to find Pibb Extra in the Midwest. I drove from WizChicago to South Bend, Indiana and it was everywhere. By the way, have any of you guys ever tasted Pibb? I'm wondering if you will love it or hate it! :) It's an aquired taste I think--my wife doesn't like it, but that's a good thing--I don't have to share with her.
Greg,
"American Dad" is a animated TV series from Seth McFarlane who does "Family Guy." They did a whole episode on Pibb even once. That episode was from season two and it's called: "A.T. The Abusive Terrestrial." It's a very funny show.
Holy crap! I'm going to look it up on youtube tonight. Thanks!

Is there a difference in Pibb and Pibb extra? I thought it was just a label rebranding?
Pibb, Dr. Pepper, and the generic Dr. Thunder all taste the same to me. But I like them. Greg, if you EVER come to DFW for a con, let me know because I will bring you an "original formula" Dr. Pepper that is made from pure sugar cane. That I can tell the difference when I drink it. They still make it in a small town in TX and I have access to it. I will bring you a couple if you let me know in advance.
That sounds cool! I will take you up on that next time I'm at Wiz Texas. Pibb Xtra was originally called Mr Pibb back in the 70's (The tag line was: It goes down good". But, slowly the drink started fading from the stores and in the 90's i don't even remember seeing it anywhere.. I was drinking Dr Pepper back then and didn't really care. I don't know for sure, but calling it Mr Pibb made it so obvious that it was intended to be a Dr Pepper knock-off (Like Dr Thunder)-- maybe that turned people away. Anyway, after drinking Dr Pepper for so many years I started getting sick of it..it didn't even taste good to me anymore and that is when I stumbled upon the newly re-packaged Pibb Xtra. that's been my drink of choice ever since! Their new tag line is "Pibb Xtra--put it in your head" ...pretty awful huh?

What's weird is that I still see Pibb all over the place. I will have to make a note to look for it this weekend at the store.
Hey Rico,
I couldn't find that American Dad episode, but i did find this Mr Pibb clip which sums up my feelings about the world's greatest drink nicely

My dad still drinks the hell out of Pibb. He always preffered it to Dr. Pepper. And he was also kind of stingy with it too. :D
Me and your dad are kindred spirits--i'm really stingy with my Pibb too. I hate it when my nephew comes over and wants one.

You know what? The United States seems to be the only place the soda makers dump their high fructose corn syrup junk. When I travel to Europe, you can get a Coke or Pepsi, but they use sugar. The Mexican restaurant near where I work imports Coke in bottles from Mexico, and it has sugar. This a little bit of a tangent from Mr. Pibb (which in the U.S. I am sure has high fructose corn syrup), but why is it in the United States we are such schleps to accept this crap??

I don't know. You can taste the difference. I mentioned earlier that the first Dr. Pepper plant here in TX still makes it with sugar as stated in the will when it got handed over from the founder to the guy running it now. The plant is in a small town called Dublin. More information can be found here (http://www.dublindrpepper.com/).
