i've been thinking about this for a while
i'm comic fan, not a poster fan or even a character fan, so is it a no-no to ask an artist for a small sequencial instead of a full page pin-up doodle?

no but maybe yes. Most artists dont have the time and its rude to make a artist do more for you and then leave no time for another fan. But if the artist has the time and you got the money theres problem with asking. Also ask really early in the day if your going to do this.

i'm a fan of comics, comics require 2 squares
i'm not a fan of posed fictional characters doing stuff
i'm wondering how the full pin-up became the norm

For one thing the pin up reeally isnt a pin up anymore cuase most artists dont have time. The pin up is much easier. A comic doesnt require more then one square usally but doesnt have too. I are you looking for dialogue with these "sketches" or just two scenes.

Best way to think about it is to put yourself in the shoes of the artist and if you think two squares of something REALLY REALLY simple is ok then go ahead and ask. If you can start a new trend that would be great cause i would rather have more of a comic from some artists then a pin up as well.

i'd be wanting something with significally less line work then one of their pin-up sketches, something as simple as a ball bouncing or an eye blinking

if i'm asking for a sketch it would be because i like the way the artist draws comics, not because i like the way the artist draws batman

Thats the same thing you said in the other thread. Well yeah if you explain what your looking for go for it. So what if you liked how someone drew Pekar would it be the same as a fanboy asking for batman?

I don't think that it is "wrong" to ask for it...as long as you may be willing to pay something should they say so.

I've seen people that have certain "quirks" about what they get from creators at cons...specifically one guy who always asked for about 3-4 inch high full bodies of various characters. When I heard a few people tell him that it'd cost...he seemed taken aback.

I think that some folks would certainly give you a few "quickie" panels in pencil. If that makes you happy...well then there you are. ;) But to think that a Finch or a Mignola or someone would do it...? I don't think it'll happen.

this is a case where I'd love to see what you get...and be 100% wrong in the process. :) Keep us posted.

I don't think it's "wrong" to ask anything. You just have to accept that some of them aren't going to want to do it.
