because i'm not as religious as they are. they're pretty immediate too, and that's what makes it difficult. normally, i just ignore people who ignorantly judge me because i don't have the same beliefs as them, who say I'm going to hell, but I can't escpae this. they say things about others around me, so i know they say it about me. and there's this air about them that i'm ignorant because i haven't accepted christ as my savior. i've never done anything but respect their rituals when i'm around, never said a bad word, but I'm pretty sure the same can't be said for them. they just did something really annoying recently and pretty much came out and said that family members around them are going to hell and they are not. my point here is that i can never be close to these immediate members of my family because they don't think i'm as good as them, because this will always be in the way, and that's a damn shame.

Yeah - that stuff sucks...but let me put it in perspective for ya...

I believe in God, and have had atheists 'judge and look down on me' because I am 'unenlightened, uneducated, narrow-minded' and - basically - a troglodyte.

My point? People - regardless of beliefs or lack thereof - can be judgmental...it's their personality that is flawed, and no matter WHAT they believed, if you didn't feel the same way, they'd probably find some way to condemn you for it.

Makes 'em feel big.

So - they believe in Christ as their savior? Heh - wasn't he the one who sat with 'tax collectors and harlots', and showed pity towards those that were 'skinned and thrown about like sheep without a shepherd?' If they believe so much in Christ, perhaps they should start FIRST by putting on a Christlike personality, and show love, not judgmental arrogance, to those around them.

Sorry if I sound like a douche, but I get tired of self-righteousness myself...whether coming from a person of faith, or one who doesn't believe in anything at all.

Two of my very best friends got drunk enough to tell me they were really sad I was going to hell at a party one time. I know how you feel, man. Try not to let them get to you, as hard as that can be...

see, that's exactly what i'm talking about. letting it interfere with friendship or family.

they don't get me donw. i've accepted it. it's just a stupid thing to let create a divide.

Definitely. It can't help but change the way you interact with people, even if you really want to be totally honest and comfortable around them. I have a religious family, but not the pushy kind. I have one group of friends that's mostly atheist or some other form of heathen (:)) And I have another group of friends that's entirely Christian to varying degrees, including 3 super southern baptist types. Being in such vastly different social situations can be kind of tiring. And it's like an unwritten rule that I can't talk about religion with the super religious friends. I think it would probably end our friendship, for real. It's a weird feeling to have this invisible wall up all the time. And, of course, that's not even true, because the Christian types talk about religion all the time and I just let 'em, but on the rare occasions I express my own views on the subject, they get nervous or offended. It's disappointing but... what can you do?

I wasn't there, but the minister at my maternal grandfather's funeral told everyone there (my mother among them) that my grandfather was burning in hell because he hadn't accepted Jesus Christ as his savior.

Occasionally I'm glad I'm so reclusive with my extended family, because I don't know if I could take the judgmentalism of the religious ones.
