From what all I remember of the ARG stuff, it really doesn't have much to do with the movie. Just fun background stuff.

alternate reality gaming.
or something very similar to that.
There's a whole mythology they've built up online to flesh out the world of Cloverfield.
Specifically, there's a company that's developed a drink named Slusho.
The Cloverfield incarnation of Slusho is a subsidary of Tagruato, a fictional Japanese drilling company. Its role may be foreshadowed, if not given away entirely, in the history of the drink on the Slusho official website. Here it is revealed that Slusho contains an ingredient "discovered on the deep ocean floor, under amazing pressure and in the most extreme cold." The history also details that the Japanese scientist who discovered the ingredient had a dream just after its discovery wherein its consumption caused him to "grow (sic) from a small fish to an enormous whale!!!"
There was talk of this ingredient having drawn the monster to the city. That anyone who drinks enough of it would end up exploding. Etc.
Recently there's been an environmental group that opposes the drilling company or whoever it was that found the ingredient.
A whole bunch of stuff like that.
Most movies are doing it these days.

Yeah, I'm totally fascinated by it, but there's no real connection to it in the movie?

Nope.
A guy at the party is wearing a Slusho t-shirt, that's about it.

Heh, it should.
I LOVE the scene where he is tied up in the chair, singing that. In the last episode of last season (I think). So awesome.

Is the spoiler about the main character going to work for Slusho, people who drank Slusho turning into the perfect food and the monster growing from the stuff that Slusho is made from false?

I'm assuming similar to the LOST viral marketing they have. Its just minor details.

Dunno :)

From what I've read they don't..
..state that he's going to work for Slusho, just some Japanese company. And there's no answer on why the monster is there, how it came about, etc. Some funny moments apparently come from one guy speculating, but that's about it.

So would anyone actually recommend seeing this in theatre?
Or should I wait for DVD?

I think it works in a theater much like Blair Witch did. If a camera swinging around alot doesn't make you sick, that is. It never bothers me.
But I'd probably make it a matinée.

How is it on blood, gore and nudity? I'm thinking about taking my 8 year old nephew to see it.

No nudity. But there's plenty of wounded people, and one person who
explodes after being bitten by the smaller monsters. That's the biggest amount of blood. And one person has some rebar pierce their shoulder. As I remember, it's actually not a gory movie. Oh, as I think about it, you do see one body that's exploded from the inside out. So a bit of gore, but it's quick.
Might be a bit much for an 8 year old, but YMMV.

I saw it and thought it was awesome.
Don't want to give anything away but it was a fun movie going experience. It's like a rollercoaster and surprisingly touching at times.
Everyone in the theater was into the movie. When the movie ends, there was 10 seconds of dead silence... and then the audience were breathing again. Trust me, you want to see this in theaters!

Here's a chunk of the NYT review:
Like too many big-studio productions, “Cloverfield” works as a showcase for impressively realistic-looking special effects, a realism that fails to extend to the scurrying humans whose fates are meant to invoke pity and fear but instead inspire yawns and contempt.
Rarely have I rooted for a monster with such enthusiasm.

saw it, too.
was very annoyed at people who were mad that there was no 'resolution'. "where's the monster come from? why didn't they tell us? why didn't they fight it themselves? this sucks!" jerk-asses.

I had those too. Sucks for them, because I thought the movie was perfect as is.
And I'm not sure you would want to take an 8 year old to it. It's not gory, but it's intense.
