View Full Version : Holy Shit! I am IN New York!!!

For the 3 or 4 of you keeping up on the ongoing saga, I am officially in New York! I am writing from a McDonald's Wi-fi hotspot on Times Square. Doesn't get anymore pathetically noob than that!

Anyhow, the bus, while pretty bad, could've been much, much worse. Actually, I didn't have to sit next to anyone for most of the ride, so I definitely got more sleep than I would have. At one point, they announced the bus would be full, but the seat next to me stayed empty-- which for those of you who know what people on a bus are like, is something akin to winning the lottery, losing your virginity and the best Christmas ever, all rolled into one. And when I did sit next to someone, they were actually the only other non-crazy on the bus. I guess normies stick together or something.

Unfortunately, today's adventure is a bit tempered by the fact that I am lugging around a 50 pound suitcase, which pretty much takes exploring out of the equation. There's also the exhaustion to take into account. I was a bit surprised that there's no locker/storage service anywhere around here, but eh... whatever, I guess. There's always tomorrow. Oh, and my first Comics Experience class is tonight, I'll make sure to let you guys know how that goes-- very excited!

So yeah, I'm here New York! Love me.

Oh and thanks to everyone here who's been so supportive during the move, especially Jef and Philip. Oh, and Thommy was totally lying about hot girls who flash their panties at you on the bus.

Sweet!

I know its very tourist-y, but I really wanna see Letterman. Is it true its like a six month wait? I heard something about them taking walk-ups, but I have no idea. I feel like TV tapings are gonna be a big weakness for me, lame as it might sound.

welcome, glad you made it ok, now exit that McDonalds and walk across 4snd street for a few more blocks until you get to 6th Ave. The you're at Bryant Park. They have wi-fi in the park there, and since its such a nice day, thats a much better spot to post from and people watch in while you get your bearings.

Enjoy, and just make sure you go somewhere other than midtown/Times Sq tomorrow.

BTW, anyone have any ideas on where I could stash this suitcase? Any locker services or anything? I'm shocked this is one thing that Cincy has that NYC may not.

Yes to Bryant Park. I'll probably take a walk around there at lunchtime today myself. Surely models will be milling about.

Ha, no, I do in fact have a place to crash while I room-hunt. Though after the bus I'm fairly certain being homeless is a step up.

Walk up to Broadway and 53rd and find out. With the strike, all their ticket arangements were screwed up, you may be able to get in. Or at least try the stand by line which might be a little more worth it now than it usually would be.

I'm going to see Dave tomorrow!

In regards to your suitcase, I'm pretty sure you won't find a good place to store it since 9/11. Places were too freaked about someone leaving a b-o-m-b somewhere in a locker and leaving.

That also probably explains the weird looks you'll be getting from people soon.

Ryudo
01-08-2008, 07:33 AM
Yeah, as far as the Dave thing goes, you should at least give it a try.

And go stand outside while they're doing Today. You'll almost definitely get on the air.

Hard to say. I think it's a security thing. People don't want to just accept these things. I think that's why it's so hard to find lockers. (Half the time I can't find a trash can in Penn Station.)

As for Letterman, you can try. I've gotten walk up tickets before, but only during really bad weather. With it being one of the only shows that's back, it's gonna be tough.

That was my suspicion, too, that it was a 9/11 thing. Though they'd be welcome to open it up and see that it is, in fact, filled with sweaters, not bombs. :D

You've got a lot of time today: go drop off your suitcase at "home" and come back to the city. Might as well use the subways when rush hour isn't happening. Then your giant suitcase will really be a pain in the ass!

Cool. I've been there three or four times. Any time there is a heavy snow fall, I go down and get tickets. They always need people during a storm. Seen Conan a bunch too. (My friend was an intern so I could go pretty much whenever I wanted for 6 months. It was cool.)

So, yesterday I ventured through Astoria and Bay Ridge, two neighborhoods with stuff in my price range. I loved them both. Bay Ridge seemed a tiny bit nicer, but also much farther from Manhattan, and Astoria feels a little bigger. Honestly, though, to an untrained eye, they actually seemed kinda similar.

Today I'm checking out Prospect Heights-- any info on that area would be great... and I may or may not have time to go up to Jackson Heights.

Any advice?

I've lived in Astoria for the last 7 years and love it.
My wife and I are gonna be moving out and moving up the road to jackson Heights soon which is equally nice, just a bit farther from the N train.
If you can find something in Artosi (Ditmars area) it's really nice and a quick commute into the city.
