Wayans enrolls in 'G.I. Joe'
Film is set to start shooting next month in L.A.

Wayans
Marlon Wayans has signed on to star in Paramount actioner "G.I. Joe."
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in negotiations to join the tentpole, which is based on the American soldier action figure created by Hasbro.
Wayans will play Ripcord, leader of the military unit.
War-themed story is set 10 years in the future. Stuart Beattie penned the screenplay, while Paul Lovett & David Elliot and Skip Woods contributed earlier drafts.
The Stephen Sommers-helmed film is set to start shooting next month in Los Angeles. Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Said Taghmaoui have already joined the cast.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who produced the Hasbro-based hit "Transformers," is producing "G.I. Joe" alongside the toy giant's Brian Goldner. Sommers and partner Bob Ducsay also will serve in a producing capacity.
Paramount will release the film on Aug. 7, 2009.
Wayans, who most recently starred in "Little Man" and "The Ladykillers," is developing a cop action spoof for Par alongside brothers Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans.
He is repped by WMA.

What. The. Fuck?
Ripcord is white... I'm not saying that he can't be played by a black guy... but GI Joe has black guys... Stalker, Roadblock and Doc off the top of my head... And Ripcord isn't even that... important... Why the hell is he in this movie??
And Leader of the Military Unit?? Duke? Flint? Beachead?
Ripcord??
This movie is going to be just as retarded as the Transformers movie.
And Joseph Gordon-Levitt?? In a GI Joe movie??
Don't you need to be well-built and tall to be a Special-Ops Marine?
Unless he plans on being Mainframe...

I'm sure they'll accept that form of retardation.

It is sad how angry this news makes me. Not just because Ripcord is NOT the leader of G.I.Joe, but because that Wayans dude sucks and is unfunny.

Lifeline.
And not all of them were Marines. Shipwreck for example.

He's too short to be Shipwreck... and not Ornery enough.
I can see him as Breaker though...
Or maybe Flash...

Maybe he will be killed in the first couple minutes requiring a new leader.

Well shitsticks.
Incidentally, while Ripcord was generally a nobody in the comics, he did get a great storyline a few years into the book where he was dating this chick who was the daughter of a Cobra Crimson Guardsman. And not just any Crimson Guardsman - the dude who engineered Cobra Island!
Where it gets really cool is when Ripcord is onboard the Skystriker taking surveillance photos over Cobra Island. We later learn Hawk specifically arranged for him to take the shots because he knew Ripcord's psych profile well enough to gamble that Ripcord would make an unauthorized ejection just to get to his girlfriend on the island. Which is precisely what he does. Hawk's notion is that, if Ripcord does that, illegally violating Cobra's sovereignty, the Joes will be required to send in a unit legally to retrieve him...and then they can snap up all kinds of photos and get the lay of Cobra's defenses, communications, etc.
Things go badly for Ripcord, though. He ends up stalked by Zartan on the rainswept beaches of the island, Zartan chewing him up with his high-power compound bow. But Ripcord gives him a good fight. It amounts to a sniper's battle, with Ripcord getting in some good shots with his assault rifle but Zartan ultimately bringing him down.
I'm actually a little hazy on what happens after that. I know Zartan ends up impersonating Ripcord and busting into the Joe base, and Ripcord's taken prisoner and eventually escapes...presumably with his girlfriend.
I'm just sayin'....awesome Man Soap Opera.

Um, Joe's next film is Stop-Loss, in which he plays a U.S. soldier. He was in great shape and still is. Dude's got a bit of a cut physique going on.

No, I was saying he could be Lifeline. The biggest pansy in the Joe Universe.
But I was using Shipwreck as an example of "non-Marine" Joes.
Really, Leatherneck was the only Marine (he has the Corps' seal on tattooed on his chest.)

Ah. I thought you meant he was in some movie called Lifeline.
Yeah he could be Lifeline.
Isn't Gung-Ho also a Marine? And Beachead and Duke?

I remember Storm Shadow ends up killing the girl's father while he is trying to help Ripcord (who ironically is now disguised as Zartan) escape from Cobra Island. He was trying to kill Zartan and isn't aware that its actually Ripcord. I'm a little hazy on what happens after that.

I think Duke and Beachhead were army.
Hmm. I got Gung-Ho confused with Leatherneck. Who I assume was also a marine.
Also, Lowlight was the biggest badass ever. Fuck Snakeeyes.

YES! Now we can jump to a bunch of random unfounded conclusions about how poorly made this movie's going to be. Because we have 2 people cast.
YES! Now we can jump to hyperbolise everyone else's reaction even though very few people have expressed anything about the movie and have focussed more on Marlon Wayans' poor acting record!

But, oh well. Have fun. I'll wait to see footage before forming an opinion.

Wayans cast as Ripcord, now the "leader" of the unit is just baffling across the board, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets lifetime benefit of the doubt based on Brick alone. Add The Lookout, and I'm downright thrilled with this casting. Just wait until the dude hit theaters as insane fuck-up Richie in the screen version of Elmore Leonard's Killshot later this year.

I'm just thinking he could be leader of Airborne Infantry, and not the entire Joe unit, and that it might just be bad wording in the article.
