5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Watchmen

6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Marvel
DC
Dark Horse
Image
Other (please specify)
I don't think the companies adapt the characters. . . . but of those options I'd say Marvel.

Depends on the product in question, accessibility post-film going.
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
No
No, I think it gives them a bad impression of the film. The general public has a bad ipression of comic fans because we fit a stereotype. For the most part. Most people know about comics from the daily paper and even that's dwindling.

Yes
No
The potential exists.
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?

People have to feed themselves and put a roof over their head. I certainly can't fault anyone for seeking a better life.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run

Can they write good stories? If the answer is yes I don't care if they came from TV, film, or some town of 500 in Idaho.

Superman The Motion Picture
Batman (1987)
X-Men

I think good, above average comics make non comics fans take comics seriously, not films.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Yes
No
No. Comic companies only objective is to selll comics. If it helps them to sell comics, they'll have their books match the fim.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
Yes
No
It depends on the character
Didn’t Heroes do this?
Depends on the quality of the product. But how seriously can you take something where someone has laser beams shooting out of their eyes?
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
Yes
No
The future of these characters is dependent on them continuing to make profit.

Thor
Other (please specify)
Dark Knight and Watchmen.

9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
if the comic is advertised at the end of the show as "continued in comic" then possibly. tv shows are free. comics require money and physical movement to a comic store. and the shame and embarrassment of entering a comic shop.

common sense

It can only mean movies that are truer to the medium of comic books. If you want a comic book movie done right, you go to the professionals.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?

I wanted to say it would improve it, but they're really two mediums, and success in one doesn't always translate it to success in the other. Also, too many TV and movie people treat it as their "gig on the side", and don't give their books the respect, effort, or time they deserve.

I was a wee bairn. It's difficult to say. In the late '70's I had Marvel Mego characters, a Doctor Doom card game, some Spider-Woman memorabilia, and some random comics. So it's hard to pinpoint why exactly I had these things other than the fact that they were marketed to kids, and my family bought them for me.

I don't think that people from TV and film coming over to write comics will either improve the product or make the product suffer in the long run. It doesn't matter what other mediums creators get work, but how good of comics creators they are as individuals and teams.
Please state the reasons for your answer.

Superman The Motion Picture
Batman (1987)

I'm not sure what this question means. Comic movies are successful because they are being marketed to groups of people who in one way or another are familiar with the characters depicted, often from some experience with comics. I think it's safe to say that a good percentage of American men my age have read an X-Men comic at some time in their childhood. I think the stigma of reading comics is overstated by the comicbook reading audience. You're not socially inept because you read comics. You're socially inept and you read comics.

One critique about the questions: a few are along the lines of, "Do you think _____ can ______ ." Given that you're proposing things that are completely plausible, I would think the answer to most of these "can" questions would have to be, "yes." For example, of course a movie can lure new fans to the medium, but that doesn't mean it happens often.

1) Age?
36-45
2) Gender?
Female
3) How long have you been reading comics?
1-3 years
4) What first attracted you to comics?
Film based on comic character
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Other - X-Men (based on the overall success of the X-franchise outside of comic books)
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Marvel
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?

8 ) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
Yes
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
Please state the reasons for your answer:
More involved - NOT overly involved - comic creators can help smooth out the lines between film and comic book. If a movie character strays too far from the character that appears in the comic books, new fans to the movie character are not likely to become fans of the comic book character, and fans of the comic book character are not going to be fans of the movie. A good balance between comic creator and movie creator involvement can help make the production appealing to both audiences - the comic book reader, and non-reader, alike.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
Please state the reasons for your answer:
I wasn't sure about this - but I'm going with 'improve the product' - for now. One, it opens the product to new audiences. Two, new viewpoints can also help introduce new ideas into story arcs, and character development. However...I think there is a possibility that it can hurt the product in the long run because I tend to believe that TV/film writers are more into their work for the money, whereas comic book creators seem to be into their work for the love of the comic world itself. Still...I have hopes that it could help improve the product...
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
X-Men
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
No
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?

17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?

(Some questions really needed a 'depends' option, with explanation, such as #10, and 11. Otherwise, I think they're fine)

That's a good point but I still think I'll get 'no' on a few but time will tell.
Thanks so far everyone:) keep those answers rolling.

Here you go:
Alright I need as many people as possible to answer the following questions. It shouldn't take too much of your time and I need as many people as possible. Help will be much appreciated:). Feedback on the questions is also helpful and if you think they suck please feel free to say so but answer them anyway:) thanks for your help in advance
1) Age?
26-35
2) Gender?
Male
3) How long have you been reading comics?
10 years or more
4) What first attracted you to comics?
Word of mouth
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Death of Superman; it's the only time I can remember a comic story getting huge national attention. I remember everyone in my family asking me if I had read it or if I planned to read it. I remember people lining up to buy the issue for their kid's college fund. No other comic book has had that sort of impact, for better or for worst.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Marvel
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
No, it hasn't before and it won't now.
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
Yes
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move in that it gives credence to creators and it allows them to be involved with something the created as opposed to just letting Hollywood have it's way with it.
Please state the reasons for your answer
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
I don't think it affects the product one way or another beyond the fact that it takes work away from people who have been actively pursuing a job in comics for a while. But then again if a TV/Film writer is the best person for the job then so be it.
Please state the reasons for your answer.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Superman The Motion Picture
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Yes
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
It depends on the character
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Dark Knight
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
No

they have the best knowledge about the character and his/her core values.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
I don’t feel that this is an either/or question. I think it is great but saying they will improve comics could be viewed as thinking tv writers are superior to comics writers. But I don’t think they will hurt comics either. That being said I don’t think adding them is a bad thing. I would like to see them create some original creator owned stuff.

Please state the reasons for your answer
Who better to know the characters of the comic than the creator? Too many times we have been stung in movie theaters watching things that Directors and producers decided to change and make their own (Catwoman, anyone?). The creator of the project's input could only help the movies. I honestly can't see how it would harm them.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
Please state the reasons for your answer.
Really, I don't care about this one either way, but I went for "It'll improve the product" because maybe it will bring fans of whatever the TV writers have worked on to comics.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Other:
I don't feel that non-comic fans do take comics seriously. And why should they? To them, it looks very much like pro-wrestling or Star Trek. It looks too nerdy to even give a chance. This is unfortunately the image that has been created for comics, and I just really don't believe there has been a movie that has (or could) make non-comic fans take comics seriously.

Bit of both really, more participation couldn't hurt, since they don't have enough power to stop the process.. so it wouldn't be something to grind production to a halt. Having a creator on hand to chip in can only help I'd think.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
Different storytelling techniques could result in something that hasn't been tried before. Similarly, multimedia tie-ins could be tried as well.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
X-Men

Possibly, The Crow or Blade, but neither had a comic, so X-Men would have to get the nod if we were talking on-going.

3) How long have you been reading comics?
Under a year
10 years or more
4) What first attracted you to comics?
It was something to read while my mom did her shopping. I'd sit in the toy aisle flipping through whichever ones were most eye-catching.
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Death Of Captain America- I don't watch the news much, but i do recall flipping through the channels and seeing reports on this.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations?
DC- my boyfriend and I are always saying that Marvel can't hold a candle to DC's TV shows. Smallville's been on forever, there's almost always been a Batman cartoon running, in one form or another, Superman, that JLA cartoon. As far as movies go, two words: Batman. Begins.
With the exception of that X-Men cartoon from the early 90s, to my knowledge Marvel hasn't done so hot with TV. That Fantastic Four cartoon was absolutely atrocious. That and everyone has had some kind of gripe with the Marvel movies.
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Depends on the product in question
8. Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes. Most people I know who aren't interested in comics/comic based movie always reference these shitastic examples of comic to film adaptations when movies are the topic of discussion, i.e. what movie are we going to see, what have you seen lately...
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
Yes
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move. It help keep those involved in the making of the movie in the creator's world not spinning of into their own adaptation of it.
Example:
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Alan Moore = LXG = Crap
Hellblazer - Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis, Paul Jenkins, Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Andy Diggle or anyone else that has EVER worked on that title = Constantine = Crap
Hellboy + Mike Mignola = Awesome Sauce
300 + Frank Miller = Totally Awesome Sweet Alabama Liquid Snake
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
No particular opinion
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
300. My dad was blown away by this movie, dispite picking out EVER historical inaccuracy he could find. That and it did pretty well at the box office.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Not enough so actually. I don't think Spider-Man 3 would have been the emo-fest that it was if they were.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
It depends on the character
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
Yes
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Iron Man- I don't even like Iron Man and I'm looking forward to this.
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don’t think they’re seen as something for children anymore

5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
I think it's Spider-Man, mostly due to the movies.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Dark Horse. Sin City, 300 and Hellboy allowed the creators the most involvement. Plus Ari Avid doesn't muck things up.
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Depends on the product in question
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
No. From my experience working at my LCS... While the fans of Buffy (or X-Files, HALO etc.) may buy the comics, they only buy the tie-in material and never branch out and try other titles. They are fans of the show, not comics.
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
Please state the reasons for your answer: I feel creators are better creators than business people.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run
Please state the reasons for your answer: I chose this answer because there's no "middle ground" answer. It depends on the writer. Some writers are good, some aren't.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Superman The Motion Picture
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Yes (Most movie goers don't buy comics. In fact, there are a ton of people who come into my LCS that say they're big fans of Spider-Man but haven't bought a comic in 20 years...)
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
It depends on the character

Please state the reasons for your answer
Making a great comic movie requires truly understanding what makes characters like Batman and Superman remain top tier cultural icons for so many decades. The only people who seem to truly see and understand these qualities of the characters are hardcore comic readers and creators.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
Please state the reasons for your answer.
They avoid the tired gimmicks that comics writers tend to use as a crutch. They bring a different tone. A perfect example is Marc Guggenheim.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Batman (1987)
(Superman is still a better film but I don't think it pertains to the question as well as Batman.)

Yes (if advertised properly so that these non-fans know that a comic continuation of their show is coming out and where they can pick it up)
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move. Having someone who has written the comic being made into the movie could weigh out and provide feedback on what would be needed and how much deviation from the source material is acceptable to be able to pull in both long-time fans and non-fans.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product. Specifically, those who writer for TV are used to a serialized form of storytelling, so having to adapt to the comic scripting format wouldn't be difficult while, ultimately, it will bring in new stories and a fresh take on the characters.

10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?

As far as story is concerned, they'd be better to judge what works and what doesn't. If Frank Miller had anything to do with Batman and Robin, there would be no Batman and Robin.

10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move-I'm probably somewhere in the middle, if the creator has no experience with film making it can be bad. I think there's different things needed to make a good film and a good comic. But if a creator's somewhat involved it's more likely to stay true to the source material.
It’s the wrong move

The best talent available should be used. Choices should not be limited by arbitrary factors. Sometimes the truest adaptation does not make for the best film.

Whenever there is new blood in any medium, it is a smart move. Frank Miller's involvement in Sin City certainly helped the book along. I understand Alan Moore's point on things, but had he become more active in the production of his films, they might have been of better quality.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?

By opening the gates for writers from other mediums to come in and take their shot at comics, allows for some new ideas and fresh takes on characters.

3) How long have you been reading comics?

4) What first attracted you to comics?
Other (please specify below)
My Dad had the original Newspaper serials of Batman collections. It all started there.
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Other (please specify below)
Death of Superman
I doubt most non-comics fans have anything more than peripheral knowledge of any of the ones listed.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
DC
Close call, Marvel's been doing real well with X-men and Spider-man recently, but DC has a longer track record with Batman and Superman going back 70 years or more.
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Yes
Some, sure. Always be a few converts.
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
Sure, to those already inclined to that attitude it can certainly re-affirm it.
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
No. My wife was a huge Buffy fan, but I couldn't get her to read the comic.
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
It’s the wrong move
Please state the reasons for your answer
Yes to both answers. It's the right move financially for the creators, it's the wrong move creatively. I dont really like the way this question is phrased.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run
Please state the reasons for your answer.
Once again, the phrasing of this question is awkward. Sometimes individuals turn out a good product, sometimes they dont.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Sin City
While I dont think ANY movie has ever made non comic fans take comics seriously, I do think that Sin City (and Spider-Man too) made HOLLYWOOD take comics seriously.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
No
Too worried? no. That's their property, they have a right to protect it. That being said, they should still try to make the best possible movie, with the broadest possible appeal.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
Yes
What's with all the concern about being "Taken Seriously"? Could they make a popular, well produced series about an established character? Yes. Would the critics still belittle it for being a comic property? Probably, until it gained broad appeal, then they'd say they loved it all along. That's how these things work.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
The future of these characters is dependent on their being well written and well drawn. The future of their movie and TV careers is dependent on their having TV shows and movies made about them. The two are 2 separate questions.
16) What future comic adaption release(s) are you most anticipating?
Watchmen
Dark Knight
Other (please specify)
Hellboy II
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don’t think they’re seen as something for children anymore
The number of children reading comics in proportion to the number of kids playing video games is shrinking daily.

A comic creator will have ideas that are outside the box, as opposed to to people entrenched in the movie system, who tend to be more quick to limit themselves creatively with regards to what is possible. A comic creator is only limited by his/her imagination, while a movie guy's creative process will be limited by realities like budget, SFX possibilities, casting, etc. A comic creator will come up with an ideas that are not bound by constraints of any kind, then leave it up to a studio to figure out a way to make it happen. A classic example of this system-dictated limitation is the whole "giant spider" debacle that happened during Kevin Smith's brief involvement with the Superman franchise. Instead of just turning Smith loose to come up with what he could come up with, and opening up to true creative concepts the studio shackled him to this idea (that came from a producer) that Superman had to fight a giant spider. The producer was obsessed with giant spiders. Just an insect found here on earth, but, you know, really big. Anyway, Smith's involvement stalled and he dropped out, but believe it or not the giant spider-obsessed producer ended up producing Wild, Wild West featuring a mechanical, you guessed it, giant spider at the end. 'Nuff said.

I'm torn, because it takes opportunities away from indie creators, like myself and so many other talented members of this community, but at the same time it definitely raises the public profile of comics in general which I think is a great thing. Some guys do great work, but others do not, or abandon projects based on the simple reality that comics pay a fraction of what TV/Movie writing does. Given the writer's strike going on out here, I fear that the comic industry will be flooded with these people which could end up squeezing out opportunities for us little guys altogether. For example, Joe Carnahan is being charged with managing the Taskmaster now. This is great for Marvel, and for comics, because this guy is definitely talented and will no doubt bring some fans onboard from outside the medium, but it sucks ass for me personally because I was just finishing a killer pitch for a Taskmaster project, and obviously, it just hit the toilet and went swirling. Bummer.

Without Frank Miller's consultation, Sin City and 300 probably would have been terrible. It helps keep the film true to the source material.

300. I've heard more non-comic readers talking about, making fun of, or quoting that movie than anything that's been released in the past 10 years. And people at my work, who know I like comics, always ask me how faithful it was.

If it's a property they own, then the more say they have in it's final product the better. If it's just working outside comics to make more money then more power to them. Get them dollars, yo.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?

Depends on the product. I'm all for more creator-owned comics, but I feel that they're wasting their talents just re-writing the latest fight between Wolverine & Hulk.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?

"You wouldn't ask a clown to fix a leak in the john." In all seriousness, I think creators being involved in the making of a movie on their creations helps keep it more faithful to the original in terms of plots, characterizations, events, etc.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run
I chose this answer because I feel screenwriters for television/film don't always translate their work too well to the comics medium, for many reasons (ego, unsure of origins and characterizations, etc.).
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Other (Please specify)
Blade.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
No (not too worried, anyway -- they always make a 'movie-verse' comic, don't they?)
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
It depends on the character (Although I'm liable to say no because of Painkiller Jane.)
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Dark Knight
Captain America
Other (Namor on the big screen in either his own film [unlikely] or in an FF movie. ;) Also, a re-try on Daredevil, a la Batman Begins, will make me very happy.)
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?

That is dependent on the quality of the writing, not the name. Whedon has elevated the product, Hudlin...not so much. And if the product is delayed because of the writer goodwill will be lost. I do think it increase the profile, curb appearance of comics; it gets attention and creates "buzz."
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?

The creator and not the movie studio has the truest vision of how the IP should be presented to the public.

It's a mixed bag. If the creator in question has a passion for comics and graphic storytelling, it's a win/win. If the creator in question is just trying to get a gig or a paycheck and has no vision or concept of graphic storytelling, it can go horribly wrong.

My mom bought me a stack of books from a garage sale before I was old enough to read... so I could look at the pictures, I guess. Included where early issues of Marvel's Star Wars, some Amazing Spider-Man issues and an issue of The Hulk. I got so excited about them that I begged her read them to me over and over until I was old enough to read them myself. It was love at first sight. :)
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
DKR. It influenced how Batman was presented in other media and helped Frank Miller get the reputation that would drive people to make Sin City and 300 into successful films.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Marvel
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Depends on the product in question
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
No, for the most part. I imagine 99.9% of those fans buy that comic and that's it. I knew a girl who bought Buffy comics in college because she loved the show. Went to the shop every week to see if they had new ones. Never so much as picked up another title and flipped through it.
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
Please state the reasons for your answer
In the case of creator-owned work, at least, it helps guarantee the creator's intent gets communicated properly, even when the movie is different from the comic (like Ghost World). It doesn't have to be a slavish adaptation, but retaining the spirit and purpose of the comic is important, and it's good to have the creator involved to ensure that.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
Please state the reasons for your answer.
Anybody with good ideas should be welcomed into comics. Period. They shouldn't give anyone with TV credentials an automatic series, but if they've got a great take on the property or an idea for a great new one, it can only be a good thing. Good comics are good comics regardless of what's on the creator's resume.
Yes
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Captain America
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don’t think they’re seen as something for children anymore... by some people. Certain people who never actually read a comic will always assume they're for kids, but most people who actually investigate them won't hold that opinion for long.

3) How long have you been reading comics?
10 years or more
4) What first attracted you to comics?
TV series based on comic character
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Hard to say. I've been reading comics for long enough that I don't really know when non-comic readers perk up and take a greater interest from something other than a movie premier.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
DC
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Yes
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
No
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move. Hollywood unchecked will take a good idea, slaughter it, drink its blood, kill its children and then rape them and eat them. Having a creator involved may not fix it, but it can't hurt.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
I tend to think it will make the product suffer in the long run, but I don't have enough direct examples to back that up. Just a feeling, and a distaste for comic adaptations of TV shows and movies.
Yes
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Isn't Hack / Slash supposed to be a movie eventually?
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don’t think they’re seen as something for children anymore. There will always be mothers who've never picked up a comic in their lives buying some blood-and-gore title for their little precious, because they equate comics with children. Overall, to the uninitiated, I think comics will largely and enduringly be viewed as something for people who have no lives. I don't LIKE either of those scenarios, but I do think they're true.

It's both. The creators know the characters the best, but sometimes they don't know the film medium as well. It took Frank Miller a few scripts before he got to Sin City (the film not the comic).

I think it really depends on the person. Some have been great at adapting to comics (Joss Whedon) while others have struggled (Ron Zimmerman).

Jim Lee's powerful cover art to X-Men #1 (Magneto cover - 1991). A four year old couldn't resist.

No
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
The current generation of comic writers have crafted some of the most cinematic, sophisticated superhero stories the medium has seen. Integrating them into the creative process of the films keeps the essence of the comic that's being adapted while also keeping the cinematic feel.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
It gives comics greater media exposure (in a positive light) and often leads to good stories (Kevin Smith's Green Arrow/Daredevil, JMS' Midnight Nation/Supreme Power/Amazing Spider-Man, Brad Meltzer's Identity Crisis/JLA work, everything Geoff Johns has done, most things Judd Winick has done, most things Christos Gage has done, etc).
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Ghost World
One of the first critically acclaimed comic adaptations that showed the public that comics were more than superheroes.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
No
The moves to keep the character in line with the movie-based status quo have been subtle and not a hinderance for the most part.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
It depends on the character
An HBO Alias series or a miniseries based on Demo/Local would be phenomenal.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Dark Knight
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don’t think they’re seen as something for children anymore
Entertainment Weekly does comic roundups and end-of-the-year lists. Publishers weekly reviews books as serious literature. The mainstream is embracing comics as a sophisticated storytelling medium.

Imaginary Third Option: It depends on the person

For people like Joss Whedon and Allan Heinberg, I think it's a good idea because they're talented writers. If it were one of the staff writers for Seventh Heaven or something, I would not approve.

They've just always been around, as far back as I can remember.
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Watchmen
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Dark Horse
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Depends on the product in question
8 ) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
No
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
They're mostly good writers that know more about story structure and character development than any L.A. Starbucks full of sweaty, desperate wannabe screenwriters tapping furiously on their laptops between gulps of venti white mocha and self-delusion.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run
To them, comics are a lark. Would you put all your good ideas into the media paying you not even a tenth of what you make from your main Hollywood gig? No, you would use it as a dump for all your half-baked ones that can't get greenlit by your network or studio.
And it makes it all the harder for actual up n' coming comicbook writers to break in at Marvel and DC, since they would rather put out a mediocre story from a "name" than a good story by an as-yet unknown.
There are precious few chances taken in corporations, and knowing that having Current Hot TV Writer write a book for an arc will mean selling an extra 10,000 copies of a title - regardless if the story is any good whatsoever - is a safer choice than nurturing an emerging talent and possibly laying the foundation for a future great COMIC BOOK writer.
...not that I'm bitter.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
300
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?

None of your answers provided.
It depends on the production values, casting, writing and good timing.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Watchmen
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
Again, none of your answers provided.
In the mainstream, yes.
For those more attuned to the diversity of pop culture, no.

1) Age?
17-25
2) Gender?
Male
3) How long have you been reading comics?
10 years or more
4) What first attracted you to comics?
Shrug... been reading them forever.
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
I dunno. Death of Superman comes to mind. But I'm pretty sure there are more relevant examples outside of the superhero 'bubble'.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Depends what you mean by company. Personally I think Frank Miller has had the best run so far, but I would not associate those books with Dark Horse (even though they did publish them). I would disqualify Image for the same reason (not to mention that I can't think of any Image flicks other than Spawn). Of your list, I think Marvel's had a better track run than DC.
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Yes (although it's a bit of a broad question - whether they can or will)
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes (but a good "comic film" can sometimes have the same effect anyway, so it's a moot point. There's good films and bad films in all genres.)
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
Yes (it's happening a lot with Buffy; I would extend this to other cross-media properties with a licensed comic title)
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
Up to them really. I like the idea of someone creating something and retaining full control over it - but at the same time I'd rather they stuck to making the comics I like (especially given how much time is wasted by creative people in negotiation in Hollywood). By that latter token Mark Millar is welcome to spend the rest of his life writing unusable Superman screenplays.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
(as long as these writers are not just arbitrarily plucked from TV on the basis of a long CV. The bigger the writing pool, the more competitive writers get, the higher they'll aim with their scripts.)
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
What do you mean "seriously"? They are a form of entertainment. Do you mean credibly? "Road to Perdition" was a highly credible film yet I doubt many people realise it was based on a comic book.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
No
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
Yes
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Iron Man
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don't think most people see comics as something for children, I don't think the majority ever really has. It's pretty much seen as just another medium in Japan and parts of Europe, for example.

3) How long have you been reading comics?*
*I'm going to recommend you change this question; I've been reading comics since around 2004. But before that I read from maybe age 11 to 15. Instead the question needs to be more like: How many years total (not including the gaps if you've stopped) have you read comics? Or: If you haven't read comics since you were a kid, how many years have you been reading comics since you started again? Something along one of those two lines. I'll answer the former.
6-8 years

No
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move
Please state the reasons for your answer:
The cross-over of writers between the book medium and the video/film medium is becoming well-established. These writers have a good grasp on how to work in both media, so who better to help make the transition of comic work into film work?
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
Please state the reasons for your answer:
See my previous answer. It's healthy for a writer to learn how to work in multiple media because it expands the growth and the breadth of the writers abilities, at least in my experience.

Please state the reasons for your answer: Comic creators know their characters the best, and for continuity's sake, will probably make the best product.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?

15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No. The creative teams making the comics have more influence on this. Remember, comics have NEVER been popular--except for the early 90's when everyone was going to "hit it big" in the collector's market.
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Watchmen
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
Yes. The stigma continues, but I think that most of the fantasy genre has that stigma. Comics just seem to be more childish because of colorful pictures.

*i chose the answer above, but i don't think it's really a cut & dry issue. in some cases, it is good but from more often than not it ends up with less than stellar results. i think it comes down to why said tv / film writer is making the transition. is it because of their genuine love of comics? is it because they were sought out by comic execs looking to cash in on the popularity of the tv / film writer's name? or is it something else entirely?
Please state the reasons for your answer.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
X-Men
*because it was the first comics-based film that didn't feel campy or half-asses in one way or another. it was produced as a great film that could have stood on its own even with no ties to an established comic book base imo.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Yes
*and it's a disappointment. when marvel started changing the hulk to make him match up with that disaster of a film, i dropped the book cold turkey and never looked back. it's a matter of perverting the original product and it's a shame.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
Didn’t Heroes do this?
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
Yes
*yes, but it shouldn't. i feel that comic execs place too much merit in what goes on in tv / film adaptations and it leads to the integrity of the comic themselves being sacrificed.
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Justice League
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
Yes
*even with the success of recent comics-based movies and tv shows, the general public still view comic books as "kid stuff".

5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Death of Superman....EVERYONE wanted that issue. Media coverage up the wazoo.
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Marvel
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Yes. When I was a comic store manager, I saw films like Sin City and 300 bring people into the stores. That's where my salesmanship took over...pretty soon, we had 'new' customers in. YAY!
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes. Case in point, Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentleman is a book I talk up a lot. But people go "the movie was such shit", and they don't believe me. I got one girl to actually read the GN, and she fell in love with it.
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?

Sin City-- only because it didn't have colorful capes and amazing powers in it, which is what I think most people think of when mentioning a 'comic book movie'

there is an equal oppurtunity for massive awesome and massive fail.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Spider-man
really, really made the Movie audience realize that comics aren't just for lonely men or kids. the sequel was even better.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Yes
while I understand the need to have a song and dance number match up with a little bit of the movies, I don't like it. slows down what progress a comic character and creative team can do.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
No
it's for the best this never happens. trust me.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No
because ultimately, it's the people who write the MONTHLY or WEEKLY adventures of these characters who get to say what happens to 'em.
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Dark Knight
Heath Ledger is going to blow Jack Nicholson's joker outta the water.
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
I don’t think they’re seen as something for children alone anymore.
I mean, comic companies deliberatly put out 'kiddie' versions of thier main titles. clearly a teenager/young adult is more suited for comics today then a kid under 10 is. I mean, this week had the second time in Thunderbolts where Venom ate someone. I lost A Venom/Rune comic when I was a kid because of the same thing!
...wow, this took more time than I thought...hope this helps Doc.

11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product

It brings a new perspective to the medium that (this being said with no disrespect) writers who have only written comics can't provide.

5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
I probably wouldn't know about any of those as a member of the main stream. The non-cape comic adapted movies are probably what have gotten most people talking.

Marvel

It's cool sometimes, but I think companies need to primarily focus on promoting from within. Jodi Picoult on Wonder Woman? Who gives a crap? Gail Simone on Wonder Woman? Yay!

Gah-It wont let me edit. #9 and #11 seem to contradict each other so I'll add that its a nice idea that the Joss Whedon's will bring their fanbase I don't think it makes that much of a dent on the readership.

TV series based on comic character (90's X-Men show - booya!)
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
DKR
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations

Please state the reasons for your answer - Who's to say they should be shackled to one medium? If they want to, I'm all for it. It's better than the alternative of movie writers entering the field of comics that causes a bit of concern (see Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, Young Avengers, etc.).
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run - Got into it a bit with the last question. It means less opportunities for aspiring writers and in some cases, a decrease in story quality (see Loeb's recent output).
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Sin City

It's the right move when it guarantees more quality control. It's the wrong move when it takes time away that could be used writing or drawing the next great comic.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product
It’ll make the product suffer in the long run
Please state the reasons for your answer.
It depends on the writers. Someone like Whedon is a great writer in both media. But if the only reason is to cross-promote comics/movies or use a "big name" from tv/film with the intent to sell more comics, I'm not interested.

Because of the bigger paychecks of TV and film, these people don't have to be writing comics for money, they are simply doing it for the love of it and this has, thus far, proven to show good to great comic writing (if slightly delayed)

If someone is going to handle the property it should at least be someone "in the know". That way the product is hopefully properly represented as to how it is in its home medium so any new adopters will feel more "at home".
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?

It can go either way. Obviously there's talent involved in these projects, it's just a matter of if the talent is guided properly. If they're coming over to do work for work's sake or to hype a book for sales just based on name value, it's eventually going to decrease overall product quality just by watering down the name brands. But, like with anything, if it is a legitimate creative endeavor with a dedicated process behind it then eventually it should strengthen the line. Good stories are good stories.

I was in a grocery store and saw a picture of Iron Man fighting some guy with nun chuks (Spymaster, I think). Read that comic over and over and over. My dad is a middle school teacher, and had a habit of catching kids reading comics in class. Whenever this happened, he brought them home to me. One day, he brought home Uncanny X-Men #222 and I was hooked. I didn't become an avid reader until recently though.

Ultimate Hulk vs. Ultimate Wolverine. Need I say more? I think most of these guys are too busy to take on comic stories and do television and movies as well.

I was kind of iffy between Superman and Spider-man, but seeing as how Spider-man once held the record for largest opening weekend, it showed that even if someone didn't like comics, they liked the characters, and that could open up dozens of windows for them reading comics someday.

TV series based on comic character
Other (please specify below)
Comic based on TV characters -- Gargoyles, specifically.
5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Watchmen
DKR
Other (please specify below)
Watchmen and DKR together are responsible for the cult of graphic novel readers. On the other hand, the modern audience outside of comics knows nothing about them. So in recent memory, maybe 300 -- but I wonder how many know it was even based on a comic...
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
DC
Between Nolan and Singer, DC's got the better score here. Dark Horse would be tied for the last four years or so, but even counting Batman & Robin, DC's track record is better.
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Yes -- but the lack of strong promotional tie-ins (like advertising the books before the movie or something) and generally crappy yet overly complicated writing in the Marvel and DC megaverses will continue to keep new fans away.
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes. Sadly.
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
Yes, a few. I doubt it's noteworthy.
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move. They should guide the movies, they should write (or co-write) the movies, the adaptations should be as straight as possible, and they should own the movies -- all of this serves a purer creative vision.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It's not intrinsically good or bad -- it depends on their talent.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Superman The Motion Picture, even though I don't think it was a great as many others seem to, the second one was better, and the next two killed any credibility the first two earned.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
No. And yes. Sometimes they force a change just to line it up better, and sometimes they ignore the fact that streamlining their books with fewer crossovers and weird continuity-heavy plotting might help new readers from outside comics jump on.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
Yes
Didn’t Heroes do this?
No. It ripped off established characters' powers, adding nothing but vacuous boredom. It was well-received by people who don't understand quality and depth.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
Somewhat. The major companies will never let a trademark lapse, but obviously if a character is doing well outside comics, it certainly should help them in the comics.
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Watchmen. Even though I think it should be a trilogy as directly adapted from Moore's script as possible.
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
Yes -- for children, nerds, virgins, and virgin nerds. And for the forseeable future. This is a pretty backwards culture in some of its attitudes.

5) What comic in the last few decades do you feel has had the most impact on the media and non comic readers?
Watchmen, indirectly
6) Which comic company do you feel best adapt their characters to TV and Movie adaptations
Nobody gets it right all the time. Hell, none of these guys have consistently gotten it right most of the time.
7) Do you think movies based on comic character can lure new fans to the medium?
Sort of, till non-comic fans hear about continuity.
8) Do you think a bad comic film (such as Batman and Robin) can give the general public a bad impression of fans and comics in general?
Yes.
9) Do you feel comic book continuations of popular TV shows (such as Buffy) bring new fans to comics?
I doubt it.
10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the right move, sometimes. Apparently Frank Miller being involved in Sin City was a good move, but I would be hesitant to let him on a Batman set (re: All Star).
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
Just because they write for TV and film doesn't mean they're going to write a great comic. Just the same, any good talent being brought into the industry is always good for comics in the long haul.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
X-Men -- a lot of non comic fans I knew were brought in by it.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Marvel is.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
They haven't shown me they can so far.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
Hasn't for the past fifty years.
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
Dark Knight, all the way.
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
Everything in the media will have negative spin attached to it. Comics needs to be proud they're comics, and not try to be something else.

I think it's essential. I often wish that my favorite comic writers were involved with the Marvel movies. I think it would make for more interesting plots, and much better dialog of course.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
Very much depends on the creator and the comic. I've read some from TV creators that I love (particularly Heinberg's Young Avengers), and some that just suck.

10) How do you feel about comic creators becoming more involved in the making of the movies?
It’s the wrong move. I think comic creators have presented their stories in one medium. Trying to duplicate that in another medium might cause a creator to become frustrated with necessary changes. And if no changes are made (i.e. if it's too close to the source material), it can often come across as stiff or less imaginative. Films based on comics should do justice to those comics, but I also think they should transcend the source material.
11) How do you feel about people from TV and film coming over to write comics?
It’ll improve the product. Good writing is good writing. I think it does a little damage when writers accept commitments to write comics and then fail to deliver the product in a timely fashion. But this isn't enough to make me think that film and television writers shouldn't write comics.
12) What do you feel was the first comic film that made non comic fans take comics seriously?
Probably Superman: The Motion Picture. It had its goofy moments, but it was a huge part of the pop culture in the late 70s and really appealed to a wide audience of non-comic readers.
13) Do you feel comic companies are too worried about having their books match up to the films?
Yes.
14) Do you think a live action TV series based on an established character in comics can be well received and taken seriously?
It depends on the character.
15) Do you feel the future of these characters is dependent on their big and small screen adventures?
No,
16) What future comic adaption release are you most anticipating?
The Dark Knight
17) Do you feel that ultimately comics will forever be seen as something for children?
Nope.
