MS. MARVEL #25
Written by BRIAN REED
Penciled by ADRIANA MELO
Cover by GREG HORN
The record-setting 25th issue is here, and it's super-sized! Is Ms. Marvel on the front lines of the Secret Invasion... or is she part of the invasion?! Brian Reed (CAPTAIN MARVEL) welcomes new series artist Adriana Melo onboard as Ms. Marvel begins her third year of action and adventure!
48 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99
NOT AGAIN!!! Looks like another character Greg has worked on may in fact be a Skrull. First Elektra, now this. Who's next, She-Hulk? Wait, forget I said anything.
Well, I'm just glad this isn't Greg's last cover, but if it was, he sure would have left us wanting more. I hope Carol plays a major part in Secret Invasion, and of course, more tie-in issues with Greg Horn covers!
Actually, I believe She-Hulk is a Skrull. Same skin color....
Anyway, looks like Ms Marvel is a stinking lousy Skrull too. This is probably going to raise a big stink like the Elektra-Skrull from a few months ago, so once again I will say "Don't kill the messenger...."

Greg, where did you learn to draw like that, you freak! I was showing my father in law some of your covers and he couldn't believe it wasn't just a regular picture that had been "worked on".
Want to design a tattoo for me? Hell, I'd even let you sign it with the tattoo gun.

So of course I have to ask. Is Emma Frost next??

The technique used on this cover is something I've been experimenting with for awhile. The Ms Marvel covers are usually detail orientated, but a close up of a face is a totally different ball of wax... instead of adding physical elements to fill space, an extreme close-up like this requires the surfaces to be finely texture (like her face has pores here) Not sure what you would call this kind of work...macro details maybe? Anyway, this style of painting was tried on She-Hulk #19 and the results were good but not quite where I wanted them. On that cover, I painted wrinkles and pores at the same time which made things confusing, but with the Ms Marvel/Skrull I painted a very light under-texture of wrinkles and general shading of the face's contours....then I created a brush in photoshop to make pores. It randomizes the shapes so you never get the same pore twice. Then, using those shapes as a mask, the pores are hand painted to the right colors. That was the hardest part because if you make the pores too light or too dark in certain areas they will look real funky, and we want to make sure Ms Marvel is not looking funky!
Hi Intercept,
I was really worried about you this month... I expected to hear fire, and rage, and an intense searing hatred of the world at large. I mean, this is YOUR girl, man! She's your freakin avatar... and you're like "okay, Ms Marvel's a Skrull--so what--pass me the joint" COME ON!!! Where is the passion?! Where is the pain?! WHERE- IS- THE- LOVE???!!
So of course I have to ask. Is Emma Frost next??
...hello?... sorry man... I was just REALLY worried about you. :-?

Yeah, it caught me by surprise, and was a little weird to see Ms. Marvel skrull-ified. But it's comic books right? It all works out in the end. Right? RIGHT??!! Actually I am sort of glad, because that means Ms. Marvel will be playing an important role in this big Skrull infiltration arc going on. And the more coverage Ms. Marvel gets, the better.
Assuming of course she returns to her homo sapien ways. I am sure Elektra and Ms. Marvel aren't going bye bye. If you think about it, they are probably 2 of the 3 of Marvel's recognizable heroines. Storm being the third.

So by the way, I am guessing Corel Painter is what you use for 95% of your stuff? How come you never have your stuff published in those design magazines that talk about those software products and show galleries? You should get on that. Good press. That is unless it is too hard to get clearance on the characters you portray most of the time (i.e. owned by Marvel).
That's EXACTLY what i was thinking. this cover should get a lot of people talking about our favorite ass-kicking blondy. And the more the merrier... so, it's all good. Marvel does not have a lot of high profile female characters so I'd think they can't afford to calously knock them off.

Well, i used painter to do the "underpainting" of the skin i was talking about because it adds texture to your digital brush like real world. This is much better for showing the depth of the face. Then i used Photoshop to work out the pores issue as PS is mo better at technical stuff like that. I'd say I use Photoshop 70 - 80 % of the time. I use Painter when i need to get Artsy-fartsy.

Or, is this just a ruse? I mean, why is she holding her finger to her mouth? Does she have a secret? Is she really going undercover as a skrull, but is really human who is possibly a skrull but no one knows? Or something like that...

Hmm... I am going with Ms. Marvel is going undercover dressed/disguised as a human who is suppose to be a disguised skrull but is really human. See, the Skrull's disguise works so well that they don't even know who is a Skrull or not.
Or maybe not. But it's plausible, right? That way we get to keep our human Ms. Marvel. Or she is Skrull, and they end up rescuing her and Elektra and who ever else from statis tanks on the Skrull homeworld. Oh wait, no, Marvel is going to wipe Elektra and Ms. Marvel off the Marvel map, permanently. Or no, wait, how about a dream sequence? The whole thing from the Civil War on can be a dream that someone had.
You don't have to talk Greg. Just give me a knowing nod if I'm right.

You don't use Painter for your hair even? I keep hearing how everyone raves about doing hair in Painter, and you hair looks so great, I figured, well 1+1=2, and Greg Horn probably uses Painter for hair. But snap! So wrong.
I know your secret. You use Microsoft Paint for everything, don't you?

As one of the Elektra cover "stinkers" Iam a lot calmer about the Ms Marvel cover than poor Elektra's skrullification. Mainly because there is no way that Ms Marvel will be killed off during this story line. Her big push may not have worked out the way Marvel hoped but she is still important to the company. Elektra I still think in my heart is a goner, either through the totally unacceptable retcon that she was never resurrected during Millers run or that she was killed off at the end of Millars Wolverine run and it was a Skrull that has been running the Hand all along.
But how do you guys reckon Ms Marvel is going to get swapped. I think it all has to do with her Skrull boyfriend that was revealed in the terminally late Mighty Avengers: WONDER MAN! He is definitely the MA Skrull, he is the only Avenger who doesn't show any real personal insight in his thought bubbles, you never know exactly what he is thinking. He is a Skrull and Agent Sum is a Kree, those are my guesses!

I bought my niece some Hannah Montana stuff for xmas...and I'm looking at the cover and thinking, what does this remind me of??

she ain't green yet, but clearly she is has some part to play in the invasion.
well it was obvious she's a Skrull. No big surprise there.

Yah, I am waiting for Illuminati #6 where Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Namor, Mr. Fantastic and Professor X go toe to toe with Hannah Montanna.

Thanks for the information. There is always a lot of work involved in your covers, right?

Heck yes! I spend anywhere from 4 -6 days per cover. Occasionally I'll get a rush job and do a cover a lot quicker...but i hate doing that...it's not enjoyable to rush art, you know?

The devil is in the details, right? A friend of mine (graphic designer) was very meticulous , he couldn't leave anything unfinished, every detail had to be taken care of, and he never seemed totally satsified with the result.
I know that feeling! But there is something to be said for the artist who can sense the ending, and wrap the sucker up! Over the years I've learned when to say "when", but it is still a difficulty for me... Adam Hughes once told me "Art.. is never finished....uh... and now i can't remember the rest but it was something really poigiant, trust me!
Anyway, if you want to check out some of my fastest paintings take a look at the Lord of the Rings stuff on my website (click the video game tab). I did all three of those in 6 days total. The covers I did for Virgin just before San diego Comiccon were quickees too..maybe 2-3 days on each of those.

I guess passion gives you enough patience to deal with countless details. I have never really experienced something like that. I'm studying literature and I love to write, but writing and drawing are two very different processes. For me is very easy to say "when".
I'll check them out.
New to this forum. Love your art Greg! Really enjoying your run of work on the Ms. Marvel covers. Also, looking forward to your new Witchblade work.

Oh no. Why did you have to leave Ms. Marvel?
Well, tell us about your new project.
As usual, I can't say anything about the new project except it is Secret Invasion related, and the pay off is just around the corner. It starts next Monday I believe (or sometime next week) and goes on all month. you'll see-- it's gonna be cool.

Okay, I just got the word on this. On the subject of The Secret Skrully Invasion project: "We will be sending them out starting tomorrow" now, what does "sending out" mean? i'm not sure (and i'm not going to press my luck by prying), but I'm pretty sure they are talking about posting these covers on the Marvel.com website. Whatever happens, i will post the first image on the forum tomorrow unless somebody beats me to it ;-)
